Did I calculate that right? Did he really run a marathon with a sub 5 minute mile pace? Incredible. I calculated that he averaged 4:43.85 per mile. Truly incredible.

This man is one of my sports hero! I know the effort and discipline that you must go through in running a marathon and to think that Haile Gebrselassie could run this distance at half the time for me to finish it is simply awesome!!! Trying to be at par with him during a marathon will be like trying to chase a galloping horse!!! Such incredible stamina and endurance! Looking forward for him to break the two-hour barrier someday...

What are you saying? The fastest man on earth is usually the WR holder over 100 meters, or the one to produce the fastest speeds, currently a contest between Gay and Bolt. Komen ran a phenomenal 3000m world record, but that's not a demonstration of pure speed, rather of speed/ endurance. What Haile showed us here is that he could endure the enormous marathon distance even at such a pace.

Gebreselassie is the best long distance runner in the history if you count both the track-running career, the cross-country and the marathon. But maybe Kenenisa Bekele is in same division and maybe he will run marathon in a near future?

Never forget that this man has run 42195m in 2:03:59. That means an average speed of a bit more than 20km/h. For a 42km-run, that is FAST!!! Just try, even once, just try. last 24th January I run the Gran Canaria Marathon (which btw was my first one) in 3:36:-- and it almost finished me. Next year, on the 23rd of January, I'll try again. If long-distance-running was easy...it'd be called "football".

Ahh fair enough. Never actually ran a marathon myself, just browsing here for motivation. Then we can see why the top athletes would still be up the front, because they want their chip's timing to read the same as the standard race clock.

Of course it is, but the top athletes go in the front so they don't have others getting in their way, and they don't lose any precious seconds by running up to the starting line. For the others however, a minute loss isn't such a big deal.

It's difficult to understand how fast he is going. Go to your local high school track. Do a couple slow laps to warm up. Stretch a little bit. Then, when you're ready, sprint one lap in 70 seconds. Now imagine running at that pace for two hours.

A sub 2hr marathon is a 4;34 per mile pace. 9 seconds might not seem like much but thats considerably faster than the current world record pace. It's going to take a real special athlete. Haile moved from the track up to the marathon and dominated. Perhaps Bekele can make the same leap. But sub 2hrs seems pretty out of reach right now.
