The story of Rocket's lesser-known but equally important sister, Northumbrian.

It's great seeing some of these early steam locomotives being talked about again. It's a part of railway history that is not covered very much and this is a great video. I hope you do more of these as this was very interesting. And I would suggest the Derwent 0-6-0 as a good locomotive to review.

I would like to see a 1 Gauge model of this locomotive commercially available. Early steamers are perfect for the LGB 600 mm diameter curved track.

That's a surprisingly short lifespan, despite being quickly outdated. You would think it would have been used for shunting or perhaps sold to a start-up.

Technology was changing as quickly as PCs or mobile phones. Rapid obsolescence and little use for them second hand.

I'm planning a video on Lancashire Witch/Pride of Newcastle :-) btw it was never called 'America' : in the order book that's the destination, not the name.

I mean it's the "modern" locomotive boiler, railways are so old that things like this which were foundational for the field have been completely superseded.

Yep, lots of locomotives are electric now.

I'm really enjoying your channel. One thing that I wonder about is the lack of protection from the elements in these early locos. I can see where this may not have been a major consideration for the earliest days, but once scheduled, long-distance travel with higher speeds is developed, it seems the engine crew would benefit from a cab. Thought?
@AnthonyDawsonHistory

Thanks very much. Cabs were.... an after thought. Afterall stagecoach drivers, mail coach drivers on the road didn't need roofs. 'Weatherboards' came in toward the 1860s basically acting as a wind-shield but full cabs are pretty much a C20th development in the UK. Some steam drivers in industry when interviewed in the 1950s-1960s who worked on the ironstone mines in the Midlands on Victorian locos with no cabs when asked why they eschewed them suggested that a cab impugned their masculinity (well not in those words). Cabs are... just not a thing.

People were riding horses and driving hansom cabs, dogcarts, and stagecoaches in the open air. It probably took a while to think about protection from the elements.

what is 4 cwt exactly? in your book you said that Northumbrian used 4 cwt of coke fuel and 500 Gallons of Water on her run from Liverpool to Manchester

A hundredweight (cwt) is 112 pounds. There are 20 hundredweight in a ton. A hundredweight is 50.8kg.

@@AnthonyDawsonHistory how many lumps is that
@AnthonyDawsonHistory
@AnthonyDawsonHistory 2 жыл бұрын
@@eliotreader8220 There's no such thing as a standard "lump" of coal. Ideally for firing a locomotive you want your coal to be the size of a man's fist. But there's no standard size or measure and you cant estimate fuel consumption by the lump.

@@AnthonyDawsonHistory a few years I saw a stage production of the Titfield thunderbolt. they used a picture of this engine to represent Thunderbolt instead of Lion. I am guessing they couldn't get a picture of Lion. the stage production was to mark 50 years since my home town lost its railway connection

By custom and tradition railway locomotives, like ships, are female. Even if they carry a "male" name. So, e.g. King George V is referred to as she.
