Woodturning - In this video I do what many have wanted to see. I combine wood shavings from my recent roughing out video and combine it with Designer Epoxy and some spalted maple to make a really cool looking hollow form. Along with that I also have a major announcement from Designer Epoxy, thanks for watching!

When you said something was missing, then brought out the spalted maple, oh, you were so right! It makes the whole piece pop: light with dark figuring, against dark with light. Great choice! I'm not surprised it sold so quickly.

Dang…right when I went to message you about buying it, you mentioned that it was sold. I love this new medium, there’s so much more you can do playing around with wood types and colored tents. I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping that we see this done again soon. This chanel has become one of the highlights to my Friday.

I think you're right, Jim. It's the combo of Designer Epoxy, pressure pot and time that made it clean with no air bubbles. A super cool and interesting piece! I'd love to see another one with maybe a lighter shade of pigment, or maybe even clear, so that the wood shavings speak for themselves.

What a great idea to use the wood shavings. If you do another one, maybe don't tint the apoxy so the wood colors are more defined. The maple collar really is a great finishing touch.

I was thinking the same thing... like a clear epoxy.... and maybe do the rice trick to get the hallow before the turn that way you won't use so much ( but then again you get that bag stuck in the epoxy too. 🤔) I think this is really beautiful. It gives me sort of wood suspended in water feel.

I like the 3D effect of this hollow form. At first I was not sure about the colour, if I was to be honest, but it’s growing on me that’s for sure. I think is goes really good with the colour of the wood chips. I do like it best when it’s well lit from the top. It shows the 3D of the piece best, and it looks like calm water and the farther away the shaving is the darker it gets. It’s pretty cool when you see it with the best lighting. Designer Epoxy

So cool! The spalted maple complements the resin-and-shavings beautifully, I think because the spalting kind of makes similarly shaped marks in the wood to what the shavings show in the resin.

That's the trick putting it in the vacuum chamber and leaving it and letting it boil out and eliminate all the air in the wood, then the pressure pot sets the epoxy in the wood. I wasn't sure what this was going to turn out like, but when you put that first coat of finish on it -WOW. It gave it tremendous depth and a 3-D effect. I loved the addition of the spalted maple top to that piece. That just finished the beautiful piece you casted. Thanks for sharing

That bowl is absolutely beautiful. The color of the Designer Epoxy you used fit the wood shaving color perfectly. Maybe you can do more of these bowls using different epoxy colors.

Beautiful! I think tinting the resin & adding the spalted maple were great ideas.

Jim, your work is always amazing, but I think this piece is my all time favorite! (So far 😊) It’s STUNNING, adding the spalted maple collar.. muah! It’s contrast against the wood shavings and red resin tint was exactly what was needed to take it to the next level! It was so fun to watch this piece progress from finish to end product. It just kept getting better and better! I hope you’ll do more with left over shaving in the future as they are truly unique pieces of art!

Colouring that resin was absolutely the right way to go. It makes the shavings look almost like shimmer powder. Didn't think I'd like it either, but I love it 😊 The way it looks like a dense thicket of brambles with the light inside 😮!

Still watching but I felt that catch and I haven't turned in 17 years. I second-guessed your choice in going so dark with your epoxy tint, but when you wet it for us, it looks good.

Bonjour Jim. It was interesting to see you express your doubts at first and then be quite satisfied with the end result. It has an almost retro look, the wood shavings giving off a burl effect; the interior lighting revealed an amazing 3D effect. Another beautiful hollow form; Well Turned, Sir! Good luck with your laser quest. At this date (July 7th), there are still 66 active forest fires in Québec. Have a great week-end, stay cool, eh!

That spalted maple collar was THE perfect choice for this! I really love the textures in the shavings that come through when it's lit. I would love to see a piece like this with maybe gold tinted epoxy instead of red, but other than experimenting with the colour I think everything else about this piece - shape, design, the stunning collar - is perfect for the shavings! Thanks for giving it a go Jim, you manage to turn everything you touch into spectacular art!
