Spray foam is the best insulation when done right. This isn't done right! So many things I did wrong on this job, some of hurts. Starting with the wrong product and a few misguided ideas, splash in a bit of forgetfulness, and just a touch of "I don't know what I'm doing!".

I live in Summit County Colorado & worked for a weatherization company utilizing all types of insulation. We have a 2006 Sprinter RV fitted/finished out by Leisure Travel Vans. After discussing ideas with my coworkers, decided to stayed away from foam as didn't want to drill holes in interior walls & it would undoubtedly buckle interior walls & exterior metal skin. Thus, we've installed Roxul, now Rockwool, in all accessible cavities. But, seeking ideas for insulating the remaining cavities ... considering Tiger Foam slow rise or Retro Foam, but can't work up the guts to implement. Anyhow, noticed U2 didn't have appropriate PPE while foaming, strongly encourage it for your next foaming.

I know, I did remembered mask and respirator a few minutes after starting. Then I soon took it off to do something and forgot to put it back on. DIY foaming kits don't have the expansion or the heat to bend your skin metal and I can't see why you would drill holes for foam insulating a Sprinter. You can spray in the cavities with factory holes before the build or more easily than any other insulation as a retrofit.

Good video Bill, I insulated my van with white styrofoam bead boards rather than Spray foam, which wasn't even available back when I did it. You used to be able to find 2" x 4' x 8' panels at Home Depot etc. Now all I see are 1/2" pink or green panels or silver mylar coated ones. You'd need several layers to fit the 2" deep panel recesses of the van...a bit cost prohibitive, so 2" foam was the way to go at the time. Used some foam spray or pink fiberglass insulation to stuff into places I missed. I had the invaluable help of a "hot wire" foam cutting tool. A 10' wire attached by long leads at each end to a transformer. The wire had handels at both ends, so you and a partner would stand at opposite ends of a foam board (resting on saw horses) line up the streched wire to your pre-drawn marks and with the transformer turned on and the wire glowing red hot, just drop the wire right thru the board like a hot knife thru butter. Made super strait, clean cuts to the various sizes needed to plug into the van recesses. Attached the foam blocks with liquid nails and replaced stock gray plastic panels over the nice flat, flush surfaces. Worked great, lots of little loose beads to vacuum clean out but no masking or cleaning up of sprayfoam overspray. A couple months after doing the job I got rear-ended and had to pull out a lot of the foam so the bodywork could be pounded out. That would have probably been a lot uglier if the foam had been sprayed in type. Anyway, It was a pretty easy job and has lasted 18+ years with no problems.

Good Morning. Spray foam removes more easily than folks think, but any insulation is good insulation. When using styro-blocks just be sure to glue them in place EVERY place they touch anything. Little vibrations where the styro is unglued can squeak.

You know you can use a hot wire to cut it tight. It would be fast and easy.
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 2 жыл бұрын
Have you done this? This foam cuts much faster & easier with a bread knife. Making a hot wire is not as easy as it sounds and melting this foam almost liquifies it so it will glue itself back together right behind the wire. Wrong application for that idea.

The trick may be the loss of a few calories of heat and and extra blankie. A live doll with warm blood wouldn´t hurt either. Perfection is elusive. My van has factory insulation that amounts to some plastic cut outs tossed in free and loose between the shell and the camper carpentry.

Bill - one of the big “warnings” I’ve read about spray foam is the “if you need something welded, no one will touch it!” Any thought about that? Another great video! So very much appreciate your sharing!
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 3 жыл бұрын
I've never had welding done on any vehicle I have drive in 45 years on the road. If I ever do, taking out foam is easier than getting the cotton out of an aspirin bottle. I have removed foam when it got into the door latch mechanism from a careless installer, and removed a bunch to install a window in Anna's van last month. Foam cuts like butter, scapes off with a plastic spatula, and if you gotta get it out of places you can't reach... a pressure washer cleans it out without a trace.

You have given me some serious ideas on how to do this better. Thanks for sharing your "tried this and that" experience. I have experience in rattle can foam and vermiculite or perlite insulation. Could you try this for viewer benefit next time. Use rattle can foam with a straw can for all of the nooks and crannies first, to eliminate time and mess. Then can foam a line barrier around wiring and door operators, fill those cavities with loose pour vermiculite, the rods should still move, drill some holes above the opening if needed. With that done, mask and string some poly twine tight over the large open panels to foam, to help you gauge how thick your application is going on. Has anyone done a variation of that?
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think rattle cans are very good "insulation". It will get brittle in time and might fall apart. I've used it to hush door rattles with good success and seen others use it to seal around styrofoam panels. I am weary of that, thinking the styrofoam panels might squeak where they rest against metal without glue or foam sprayed in-between. The string idea I really like, and will try to remember that when we do Anna's van. Thank you!

Foaming is an art. Those bottle kits are hit and miss Humidity and temps effect it greatly. Next time use rock wool. More effective and increases sound deadening.
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 3 жыл бұрын
Any insulation will help with sound, but nothing compares to spray foam adhered to every soundboard. Our side by side comparison of insulations showed very similar inside temps when parked in extreme Florida sunshine, but the spray foam has other advantages like structural support of the roof for walking-on and unmatched change in door closing. I agree 100%, foaming is an art and my latest work looks like it was done by Picasso's cat.

@@FloridaVanMan Yeah I know because I owned a spray foam company for 4 years. Closed cell is good r value per inch but can conduct noise because it is rigid compared to rock wool. Rock wool is easier and cheaper to install in a van is fireproof, foam is highly flammable. Rock wool has Great sound attenuation, mold and mildew resistant and nearly the same insulation value on a metal surface because air barrier isn’t a concern as on a house. If you plan on walking on the roof on a regular basis then it does have a big advantage there.

@@lonestarsherp7560 What foam is flammable? Every time I have foamed a van I tested a scrap of cut off foam by trying to burn it and getting it wet. I've not found a foam that will support a flame.
@lonestarsherp7560
@lonestarsherp7560 3 жыл бұрын
@@FloridaVanMan all closed cell and open cell foams are flammable that is why a thermal barrier is required in occupied spaces and ignition barrier in attics needs to be applied. They will self extinguish with a small flame but there is a point where it will sustain combustion and it grows rapidly with very toxic fumes. I have been a structural firefighter for 24 years and have seen several homes that had foam that had very rapid fire growth with foam that didn’t have flame retardants applied. Just look at videos on KZfaq.
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 3 жыл бұрын
@@lonestarsherp7560 Getting to that point, where the foam is so hot it will sustain a fire, is going to kill everything in the van twice. I tossed large chunks in a bonfire. It only melted into a spot on the logs without adding any apparent fuel. Spray foam might add fuel to a raging house fire with people still trying to escape. But anyone still in a van when a fire is that hot, is not breathing toxic fumes or air. Spray foam will not catch fire in an electrical short, a tipped candle, or a kitchen fire in a van, unless you are deep-frying a turkey in a van. I'm not a firefighter or a pyromaniac, but I don't see any way spray foam is flammable in the context of van insulation. If the fuel tank or motor oil flashes over, it will obviously burn. But does the insulation matter at that point? My conclusion: Spray foam is better until you reach a point where insulation material doesn't matter.

Closed cell foam adheres to the metal and no moisture can penetrate it. I think it is the best insulation for a handful of reasons. But I still need to figure out the right way to apply it. My first attempt remains the best, but I can't find that contractor back, from so long ago.
