Mill Brook Railroad

Жыл бұрын

It was supposed to be a ten minute run. Not even close. I started out plowing and ended up dropping between the rails in two spots. Then, I was stuck on the wrong end of the line and didn't have the 71 or the coupler pocket plow available. So, I kicked the rails back into gauge and screwed them back onto the ties, continued on, did the same on the other section where the rails spread, then slogged back up the hill to the engine house.

I hope that he passes the repairs on the rail. it never fails, the track does not have issues in the summer, but in the middle of a winter, during a snow fall, and at night … oh well that is how it goes. great video, hope you have warmed up from the repairs, have a great day.

LOL life in the ES&D RR. :) You been watching Hyce on his channel? HA HA Figures, crap don't happen until your buried in 8" of snow and cold. I wonder if shrinkage from the cold pulled that inside rail in the soft ties? That is odd that it just did that now. :(
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Жыл бұрын
I do watch Hyce. Lots of fun being had there. At least my track doesn't smell like Kenosha. Instead, it smells like chicken, um, droppings. The problem on the straight was rotten ties. The problem on the curve was a combination of soft ties and aluminum rail that probably wasn't hardened to 6061-T6. There was quite a lot of rail web deformation on the curve. Basically, I'm rolling the rails outward under the pellet train. I made a couple phone calls and discovered that the rail I'm using isn't the rail I thought it was. I thought it was 1980's 6061-T6 hardened aluminum rail from Nuskey Engineering. What it turned out to be is Little Engines 1" scale square head rail from the 1950's. Hardening unknown. ...and I know folks who won't run the loads I carry over West Coast rail, (which is 1" x 13/16" and hardened to 6061-T6 specs) because they're afraid they'll break it.
@s16100
@s16100 Жыл бұрын
@@MillBrookRailroad Oh crap on the rail. That sucks. :( I guess then actually you have been lucky so far. If you want to call that luck! Aluminum is soft anyhow, but after 70+ years, it has probably been annealed with trains and hot cold spells so any hardening it had might be gone now anyhow. Assuming Aluminum acts like most metals. I can't imagine there is anything you can do to re-enforce that rail like making blocks to insert between the web and the bottom of the rail head? Or would it be cheaper to just buy new used rail? And yeah, Hyce can be quite entertaining at times indeed. :)

My suggestion. It is likely you go on the ground at several, common places. Why not put in concrete sleepers, with built-in bolts and secure the rails in just those areas, to minimize issues?
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Жыл бұрын
In a word: cost. The relay ties I'm using now were free and pressure treated ties cost me about 45 cents a piece to make. Upgrading the rail may also help. Some of the reason I go on the ground is rail failure. I've literally flattened the rail in a couple places.

Sir Have you thought of doing what real railroads do using rail spacers and “nail” the track to the ground. Use a 1/4” x 20” rod threaded on both ends (all thread too expensive) placed under the rails between the ties. Using a track clip and nut on each side of each rail and using an open end wrench adjust and tighten to gauge. Track clips can be made from OVER size washer, edge bent in a vice with a hammer. Bent to clip the bottom edge of your rail. To keep the entire track assembly from moving “nail” it to the ground. A short piece of 1/4” rebar with washer welded to one end as a head, drive it down thru a hole in middle of tie to flush. Length depends on ground, mud, rock, etc. 10 to 12” usually good. Washers and nuts buy by the pound from a FARM and home place. Rod and rebar usually cheaper. Good weather project. Easy to make a hand full of both. Use as needed. These are just thoughts. Thank You
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Жыл бұрын
It sounds like you're suggesting two different things: anchoring the track to the soil and gauge bars. Gauge bars are a great idea, and I'm working on it. Anchoring the track to the ground is generally used as a temporary measure when the whole track is moving laterally. What I encountered here were two different kinds of gauge widening, but I didn't fully realize it until after I watched the video in the edit process and had a conversation with a real railroad track engineer. Here is what that conversation revealed: On the curve, the rail failed. It bent right over, which is why there was a whole lot more kicking done there to literally get it back in shape. I also had some ties in the curve start to fail. Tie failure is something I deal with everywhere on the railroad, which brings us to the other spot, which was due to tie failure. I'll be replacing hundreds and hundreds of ties this spring. Thanks for your thoughtful suggestions!
@josephplankinton612

@@MillBrookRailroad Sir, Yes I am suggesting two different things: anchoring the track to the soil and gauge bars. As a very old amateur, maybe as a younger pro RR, you can explain further, as I don’t see why the gauge bar will not solve the gauge problem and your roll over. If the gauge rods are used properly then I think this would reduce both problems. Not knowing the rail material, weight, and profile, assuming Al alloy rail (not steel), a 6.5 mm web and standard head and flat bottom rail, then with the rail clipped on both sides of the foot of each rail and the rod attached to both rails, the rails should move together. If a heavy weight was applied to the head in an outward direction, I could see that the web could bend over but not roll but maybe if the foot breaks at the clips it could. Help me understand. Thank You

I was wondering what if you use a washer and one side grind it flat would that help keep it in gage or use 18 gage sheet steel cut 1/2" strips that will reach 3 R&R Ties drill little hole's in the steel for the screws if the area is curve you cut the steel at the same curve I would do this in the areas you have troubles at. For the R&R Ties if they keep moving I would drill a hole in the middle if the Ties an use like a 12" nail or you can make some nail's get small Rebar heat up one end till its red hot and hit it with a hammer so its like a mushroom put it in the snow to cool off
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Жыл бұрын
The rail actually rolled over. i was bending it back in shape with my boot as a hammer, in a mild state of disbelief and denial. The rest of the movement wasn't the ties themselves, it was some of the screws that hold the rail down. tie plates would help some if it, but I'll have to make them myself. Sheet metal between ties would make it difficult to tamp in new ballast and level the track, so I think traditional tie plates would be best. Thanks for the suggestions, though. I'm glad you're thinking about it.
