Day 3 of cleaning up from the snow storm that dumped more than two feet of snow on us on March 22nd, 2024, and now I am desperately trying to break through to the Russell Plow that was stranded on the wrong end of the line in the middle of the storm. So, it's 2 engines slipping and pushing all the way.

There are 2 things that you can do to prevent your motors from burning up. 1. is to add a current limiter that's set to the rated maximum of the motor. Many DC motor drive systems have this limiter built into them. 2. is to add a small muffin fan aimed at the motor, even better when ducted to flow through the motor. This constant running fan would draw little from the batteries, yet make a huge difference in the motor temperature. The motor's internal fan becomes very inefficient when the motor shaft is turning slow and under heavy load.

I had built a second locomotive to prevent burning out traction motors, but it was out of service.

When I was stationed in Indiana, we had over 70 KC-135 air refueling aircraft, that had to be able to fly anytime. Trying to keep the ice and snow off the aircraft, parking area, and runway, was a full time job in the winter.

You are going to have to start calling the #10, the little engine that could.

I know in the last video you said you dont use the brakes on the #10 Locomotive. but ive always been curious on how the brakes work on 7.5 & 7.25 engines, would it be possible to get a video of you explaining them and showing us what they look like on the locomotive?

that was like a Buffalo,ny snow storm! you get buried for a few days, you clean it all out just in time for it to all be melted by the tine you get home! nothing worse then that very heavy wet snow! to move by hand! great video,hope your engines are ok.

You have to love Vermont! That looks to be quite a snow dump. Good to see you out there having fun with your backyard RR. Must be some way to adapt your show thrower? My son & daughter-in-law are in Rutland and they got nothing the likes of this. Enjoyed it? Nothing the likes of what you did.

The one with the plow needs a bigger motor or two motors and maybe some extra weight if it was me I'd put a motor in the front and put a motor in the back an add weight at the drive wheels so it can get more traction with more traction you could make the plow wider on the front
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 2 ай бұрын
The one with the plow has the same motor as the 70 and 71. It needs taller gears. Its top speed is 2 miles per hour. As for weight: I get this suggestion a lot. The problem is that when your solution to every reduced traction event is to add weight, then you quickly end up with a locomotive that is too heavy. This was the case with the little red engine. It had been loaded up so much with extra weight that the springs and the wheel bearings were broken. It was also geared down so low that it was a menace on club tracks. The springs and bearings were fixed, but the gearing is being left for the next owner.

yes broken chains stinks! especially on a dirt bike in the middle of nowhere, miles from home. and not having a back up on you! sleep well and work on it tomorrow!.

Please keep in mind that this was in late March. I fixed the chain with a new tool that allows me to have a chain without a master link. Something I'm actually excited about!

@@MillBrookRailroad do you use a ball peen hammer to secure it? it is so much better not to have that weak link in the chain. master links seem to fall apart at the worst times! the rounding it like a hand rivet, it is best to try up grading to eliminate weak points.

Great entertaining video… I must be missing something .. is the snowblower not working? Why not just run the track with the blower and shovel .. then run the trains .. seems to be a lot of wear and tear on the tracks and trains to me .

When the snow is that heavy, the snow blower either digs in and grabs the rail or clogs up with ice.

Idea: heated blade to melt snow a bit on contact.

Should use a steam locomotive instead of the electric powered diesel because cold snow can't beat hot steam...

Ouf...you succeded but what a war !! Message to myself: keep a good supply of traction motors and chains. Aaron, i just wonder on long term cost/labor, your traction motor way you choose is cheaper, straight from many vendors. Does specialty axle mounted, 2 traction motors would offer more power or live longer ? I know they´re dam costly without any guarantee to be easily available ? Finally it was 3 "easy days"....imagine 1 or 2 inches of pure ice instead....
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 2 ай бұрын
Normally, I would have started by plowing with 70 and 71 together, and I wouldn't have lost the plow or overheated any traction motors. If it was pure ice, there would have been one short video and a loco and plow left under a tarp at the end.

Wouldn't it be better just to use the snow blower to clear the right of way rather than burning out traction motors and breaking chains?😎😺🚂🚃🚃🚃🚂✝
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 2 ай бұрын
When the snow gets that heavy, the snow blower tends to bog down and/or grab the rail, so either way, there's a risk of damaging something. At least traction motors still run after they've been overheated. After looking at it later, it was more of a medium toast than a complete burn up. I'll run this motor until it burns up completely, then I'll put another one in. Of all the locomotives I've ever worked on with this model traction motor, the 70 is the only one that I've ever had to change a traction motor on. I think this is the 4th or 5th one since it was new in 2010. Plowing snow gets them every time. This is why I built 71. Unfortunately, it wasn't here for this storm.
