Continuing on my 33-day solo backpacking adventure in the spring of 2023. In this episode a downpour creates a minor flash flood and I chat about quicksand. Highlights of this third episode include Upper Harris Wash, Cache #1, alcoves in Harris Wash, spring wildflowers, and hiking down along the Escalante River.
This is the extended series for my hike and includes a bunch more footage and stories not seen in the original all-in-one overview video. This 12-part series takes a deeper dive into the route I dubbed the Grand Escalante Loop and covers over 400 miles through southern Utah's amazing canyon country, remote plateaus, and high elevations. It was a slow go at times, but still a great hike. 2023 was a unique year with record-breaking snowpack over winter and a rainy spring. Thanks for following along!

I enjoyed this vlog and especially the scenery. I never tire of seeing the beautiful scenery and wish I transport myself where you are. Your narration is very good and fits well. Thank you for taking Mr along and I will continue to join you vicariously into the beautiful Utah backcountry.

Enjoyed your primer on quicksand. We got quite adept at spotting potential quicksand during a hike of Paria Canyon . We did have to go digging for a shoe eaten by the sand at one point. Which became a valuable lesson in what one brings as camp shoes (if you do that). A lost shoe would have meant hiking the last 20 miles in flip flops. Anyhoo, loving the trip. Thanks so much for this!

I also have the Granite Gear Blaze 60. I use a pack liner, but 99% of the time I don't cover it in the rain, even in heavy rain, and it has worked great. The only issue I have experienced is that the side water bottle pockets would get a puddle in the bottom during a downpour, so I had a local tarp shop (they make gear for boats, heavy duty tents, etc.) put in a couple of holes and grommets in the bottom, so they can drain. Worked like a dream.

Ahhh I just love Harris Wash. it’s a slog this year though. Brush was so bad and made for slow slow going.

If I win the lottery I’m going to hire you as a guide for a few weeks. I’m always scared to go cross country solo. I’m slow so you would have plenty of time to film.
