Y'all have some odd ideas about second language acquisition. :-) Also, I saw this on your website: _"... In fact, that causes brain fossilization [grammar drills] ..."_ It's the _interlanguage_ that fossilizes, not the brain. Lol. And there's pretty good evidence that being exposed to some amount of explicit grammar instruction actually reduces fossilization.

Years ago, you would hear English speakers say "a very good morning to you". Sometimes when being greeted in a store or office, or if the speaker wanted you to know that he or she was in a very good mood.

in Spain where i live in the province of Alicante (southern Valencia region) the term BUENAS is very common as a greeting for any time of day. BUEN DIA is a term we use to say something like "have a good day", when you are leaving a store for example.

Thank you for this comment! I often hear ‘Buen día’ and began to wonder if Spanish speakers had become too lazy to say ‘Buenas días’. Now I understand this meaning! Thank you, thank you. I love learning the what & why from others.

@@4everThoughtful I've been using "buen dia" as a greeting and a goodbye. I realize now that it more appropriately is the shortened form of "Que tengas un buen dia."

This surprised me when I was in Spain because I thought people where saying “Bom Dia” like they do in Portugal. I was scratching my head thinking “I thought in Spain it was Buenos Dias?” I actually really like “Buen Dia” and “Bom Dia” - they sound nice to my ears. Kind of like “Bonjour” in French.

Usas la forma usted para hablar con tu tia? Es eso comun? I naturally adopted saying "buen dia" as shorter and easier than "buenos dias." It's good to know that los mexicanos commonly use it, too.

Those variations aren't common in whole Latinamerica, they are common in Mexico.
