My question falls outside the topic of your video here, but as an experienced professional trim carpenter new to Tormek sharpening, I recognize from your videos that you are an expert with these machines. My concern is almost entirely limited to use of SE-77 square edge jig for my chisels and plane irons. I have quickly accustomed myself to use of SG-250, TT-50, and stone grader. Achieving a perfect 90 degree edge is easy and readily repeatable. However, a colleague encouraged me to substitute composite honing wheel CW-220 for the traditional leather wheel LA-220. I have found the new CW-220 I received to be out of round and its circumference honing surface not flat across the wheel's width. I had hoped to automate my typical 25 degree grinding by using SE-77 and a secong support bar when honing (rather than free-hand.) The results I achieve after such honing are consistent --- consistent in that they repeatedly alter the perfectly ground bevel by making its shape follow the shape of the outside surface of the wheel. Investigating further, I have found that the honing wheel's drive wheel itself runs significantly out of true. Tormek so far refuses to ackowledge this misalignment to be unacceptable. Is this a common issue with CW-220? And if so, do you agree that going forward my best option will be to return CW-220 and hone with the standard LA-5?

Unfortunately, Dr. Kraychuk will not be able to answer your question.

:) I could not think of a better name for this video, as it is not a normal instructional with commentary, nor a slide-show - just watching someone silently doing something... peep-show :)

Amazing videos and sharpness . Have you sharpened 15v?

Why not go directly to CrO4 (or silica) leather honing after 1000grit sharpening - Paul in Alexandria does this and seems to get to BESS 35 quickly this way. Do you do it this way to prevent chipping? Sorry for not reading your book and knowing all the details.

I just watched your how-to video with the chromium oxide. Now That I see that you are using a mix of chromium oxide and .25 micron diamond, I was wondering if you mix the diamonds, the Chromium oxide, and linseed oil together, or just the chromium oxide and the diamonds?
@knifegrindersaustralia51583 жыл бұрын
We simply rub diamonds over the Cr2O3, or the other way around, paint the Cr2O3 over diamonds rubbed in the wheel. I don't think they should be mixed when preparing the chromium oxide paste, because the diamond base, the alcohol or water or whatever it is, may interfere with the linseed oil polymerisation & solidification on the wheel. When you rub diamonds over the Cr2O3, let it settle overnight before use.

@@knifegrindersaustralia5158 Thank you! I happen to have some spare diamond and cnb strops laying around somewhere, hopefully they're in the right micron range

Guys, can you make a video on diamond vs CBN wheels?
@knifegrindersaustralia51583 жыл бұрын
The subject is too technical for video. You can read about the difference in these articles: knifegrinders.com.au/dropbox/Hard_Choices_Diamond_or_CBN.pdf and knifegrinders.com.au/Manuals/CBN_AKMarticle.pdf
