By simply wrapping the rods on a Sharpmaker with newsprint and checking to see if the edge catches it is possible to check the angle on a new knife and see if it is higher or lower than the Sharpmaker settings simply by seeing if it catches or slides on the paper.
Going further it is possible to measure the angle by how much you have to tilt the blade off of the stone to make it catch and just add this extra angle to the angle of the stones. If you have to tilt the knife two degrees to make it catch on the 20 degree setting then the edge is ground at 2 + 20 = 22 degrees.
It is important to check both sides of the edge as often knives are not evenly ground.
As a further note, a dull knife will not catch on the paper at all, however you can still use the same check to see when the knife has apexed because as soon as it is apexed it will again catch on the paper.

Brilliant! It's so easy and simple when you know how. The final section where you suggest propping the base to achieve certain angles is a gem. I haven't used trig in 50 years, however - so wish me luck!

SharpMaker is a brilliant simple design tool that in the proper hands can create or maintain a very sharp knife. Thank you for this video. Cut two post it notes so only the glue part stripe remains and wrap that around the top of both stones and use that as the proper angle guide. Your muscle memory can quickly pick up on the feeling and you can sharpen any knife on either the angle holes.

Good video. You can however turn the stones to the narrow angles in the holder. This will allow you to follow the edges on almost any knife. I have been doing it for years.

the magic of the versatility. my favorite sharpener ever! (and they keep getting more expensive) years ago, I thought $50 was thru the roof! Now, a used one can be $50, with new on Amazon and Ebay more like $70. Tried the Lansky ''toy sharpener''.....wanna talk about in-exact! Not using it on good knives. GREAT TIPS, thanks.

Unfortunately not yet, but it is on top of my list. I will order it around September 10th and hopefully it will arrive by the end of the month. I wonder if I should buy only the Sharpmaker or additional diamond rods as well?

Ivan Stojanovski A lot of knives come with angles which are higher than the preset angles on the Sharpmaker (15 and 20 dps). The medium stones cut so slow that trying to use them alone could take hours to days if you try to sharpen a knife which is at 25 dps on the 20 dps setting. I would recommend you have some way to recut bevels either the CBN rods or a coarse stone. The first thing you do is use them on the 15 dps setting and then sharpen on the 20.

I only have a Spyderco Endura (VG-10). I bought a Sharpmaker when I bought my knife. Are all Spydercos the same angle? If I buy a Paramilitary or a Delica, my sharpener is going to be at the correct angle. Correct?
@CliffStamp
@CliffStamp 10 жыл бұрын
The Spyderco's are intended to be used on the Sharpmaker immediately however this isn't always the case. One of the most common problems is that while the total angle can be less than 40 degrees included often one side is much heavier than the other thus when you start to sharpen you only hit the edge on one side.
@drolay2

do you have any recommendations for 20 degree grinds, sharp maker only has 40 and 30 degrees
@cudgee7144

Get an angle cube, place it on the left rod, then tilt the base till you get 20 degrees. Then place something, a pencil should be okay, under the base at that point. Then just move it around till you get 20 degrees on the rod. That is your 20 degree mark, attach the pencil with a rubber band to the base, but you will have to swing the base around each time you change bevel sides to keep it at 20 degrees. Hope this helps, and it does work, just takes a bit of practice.

Nice video Cliff. Agreed on how hard it can be to hit the apex too even when the marker is disappearing or you think you are, especially if you get a bevel put on on a belt grinder as it often has some curve right near the apex. I could not figure out one day why I couldn't get a 5160 chopper to apex. Ever so slightly increase the angle to the stone and it was almost instant.

Yeah, this is probably one of the biggest sources of frustration when you are starting out. In the 2000's when the forums first came on line, this was maybe the hottest topic, that and burr removal.

It's still a bit hit and miss with the Sharpmaker though. Lot's of room for error when you're stood in front of it and trying to keep the blade consistently vertical. Not as easy as it sounds.

Not to be a pain but I see a few problems. If the edge has a burr from the factory this wont work, if the edge is uneven it won't work. If its not sharp enough to bite the paper it won't work,.....
@CliffStamp
@CliffStamp 10 жыл бұрын
If the edge is uneven it will just catch on one side and not the other. It should be checked on both sides for this exact reason. It will still catch if the edge has a burr as the edge would still be thin enough so that the apex pressure would rupture the paper. If the edge is completely dull it won't catch at all so this has to be done on a sharpened knife but as noted in the description it can also be used while sharpening to see if you are grinding on the apex or above it.

The Hinderer is sharpened at 25dps?!? That's ridiculous. I have a machete that's sharpened on less. On another note, this is another problem with the educational system. We took trigonometry in math, but they didn't really show us any really practical uses for it. They just gave us some theorems, a couple basic problems, and just repeated that changing what's needed. Emphasizing a bit more on memorization than on practical problem solving (At least that's the case here, which I have witnesed), giving the idea that math is useless in real life problems.
@CliffStamp
@CliffStamp 10 жыл бұрын
That knife is used, I sent it out on a passaround, but yes the initial edge angle is quite high. You had poor teachers, it happens. If what you are being taught doesn't have an application then the information is useless and/or poorly understood by the teacher, have some imagination, find out what the students are interested in and speak to that.
@shurdi3
@shurdi3 10 жыл бұрын
Aye... sadly too many of them here seem like they're just talking off a script, and since most students care more about the grades than actual knowledge, they usually just 'memorize' some stuff to pass the test/exam.
@CliffStamp
@CliffStamp 10 жыл бұрын
shurdi3 You can't blame the students for the fault of the teacher, students study for exams as that is how often the material is presented both in goal and in format. It does not have to be that way, but it often defaults to that as it is the simplest way to teach which requires the least effort.
@shurdi3
@shurdi3 10 жыл бұрын
...I think the fault is mixture of what parents want out of their kids, the teachers, society, and pre-teens wanting to have an easy scale to compare themselves to others, which continues even into adulthood in some cases

This is an antiquated and unsophisticated sharpener, get a KME and you will have a far better mirror and razor sharp edge.

Thanks for the suggestion, I mainly use Benchstones. But I kind of like how the Sharpmaker is a simple system, you can in fact almost replicate it in the field with a normal stone just by setting it at an angle.

What a hype about angles. All the great sushi chefs or Japanese knife makers or the great people at Bark River knives sharpen their knives free hand and they all shave. If people don’t know how to sharpen then they should just buy a Lansky or a similar device and stop criticizing Spydercos great great great sharpmaker.

Maybe people aren’t that great compared to those that have been doing it for years ? The sharpmaker and the lansky are both great systems I know someone who has both 🤷‍♂️
