Sqsl Lottery is a very interesting midi sequencer. Available for iPad, it can be used to send midi to any apps or plugins that receive midi - on your iPad / desktop / hardware. Note that it is not AUv3, so cannot be loaded inside host apps on your iPad etc, but it can still send midi to them. It can send midi clock, but it does not use Ableton Link. These omissions would often put me off an app entirely , but I really like this developer’s way of approaching sequencers, so I can overlook that somewhat in this case.
This video is a very detailed spoken walkthrough. I also have 2 short audio demos on this which you might want to check out, I especially like this one:

Thanks Greg! Yes, these apps are definitely not for dummies, they’re not actually that hard to understand, but they take time to master, and usually benefit from the user having a decent grasp of theory.

Kudos to you Gav for tackling this brand new release.. you’re fearless my friend.. 😁 great job of covering the ins + outs of Lottery.. I’m so happy we have devs like this on iOS.. definitely coming at things from a different angle.. using the iPad as a performance tool.. it’s exactly what it was meant for.. quick interaction on a touchscreen.. This may not be for everyone because of the lack of connections + sync to other apps on our iOS devices.. but.. that’s OK.. the ones that can see the potential of Lottery in their setup will jump on this.. your walkthrough on this will help.. I do like the ability to set a custom scale.. that’s quite cool.. as you mentioned, less of a chance then to hear wrong notes (if you’re trying to stay in some sort of key center).. the chance + probability options are fairly easy to grasp.. just need to play with it for awhile.. thinking differently can be a good thing.. The lack of proper preset retrieval is kind of a drag.. but.. I then look at this as a one-off performance instrument.. what you play now + today will never be repeated.. so.. record the performance if you need to.. or.. let it dissipate into the ether.. only here now.. gone forever after.. like going to watch a performer live on stage.. that’s a one time only performance.. each one will be different (perhaps only slightly but nevertheless).. so embrace the beauty of the moment with Lottery.. Thanks again Gav.. a great addition to your already outstanding iOS video library..

I have Temp and Latch but this I think is his best effort and the most musical so far
@GavinskisTutorials
@GavinskisTutorials 4 ай бұрын
@ToastedGhost yes, it has been a while since I used temp, haven't compared time directly and forgot some things about Temp, but this is likely his best, I agree. It's just such a pity they're not auv3. Dev would sell a lot more of them, even at this rather high price point.

Very helpful, Gav! I can see this also being interesting for those with some background in Indian music, where ragas have specific sequences of pitches that are characteristic of that musical mode.

When you look at this app. I see a designer. A designer that designs for a specific space. Like a architect. Scaling down is not a option. It's full screen or bad luck. Not only will the app as auv3 be smaller on every screen from te get go. Now the dev has to waste energy on a finished idea because the auv3 users are gonna scale it to every possible size because they want to see as much as possible because they loose screens pace with every visible auv3 to begin with. Yes auv3 is great in many ways. I am a hoarder too. But the reality is, that dynamic scaling a app will make a 80% app on all screens. Never gonna be 100% These apps can be 100% That's why Samplr is still a 100% This developer will live a better life making these apps standalone with less money because this particular Dev knows exactly what misery auv3 would bring to his life. I don't know him personally. But this is my impression based on using his apps. And they are gonna complain it does not scale well. And the buttons are so tiny. no shit sherlock. . Have you seen the UI? limitations and constraints will always benefit art. the modular philosophy of AUM transitioned into a window-dragging carnival having just as many options as apps as the presets they have. and when do you make your best stuff? when spending hours with that 1 synth,1 fx, 1 sampler. because you had no other options. now you know your tool.

Haha, as it should be! I wouldn't mind a master scale quantizer for the output tho! Could always use Rozeta Scaler or one of the Mozaic scale quantize patches

Yeah, a scaler would make a lot of sense @@GavinskisTutorials

@ljs8888 definitely. You can always put another app to do that after this one, but would be handy to have it built in. I have not tried this with a Scaler app yet but I plan to later today, I don't always want to have to think too hard in order to avoid bum notes 😂

Oh my yes preset saving is a bummer… no names? And in middle of a save matrix you would remember how it was set up? Derrrr?

Totally, but the dev did mention he might add preset naming (See the Live chat record for this vid.)

Interesting midi plugin for sure. Unfortunately it's way too expensive for what it does + weird layout + no AUV3. Also a scaler is a must have for apps like this. I can't understand why it still plays an E when the only punched in E is the one on the "Off" column? I thought that should be an off note. I'm curious how you have set it up to send midi to AUM. Also - kudos for not using that annoying zoom in-out video effect!
@GavinskisTutorials
@GavinskisTutorials 4 ай бұрын
You should watch my video again because it explains clearly why it still plays an E when you have an E in the off column, as does the manual on the dev's website
@GavinskisTutorials
@GavinskisTutorials 4 ай бұрын
But basically, as explained in the vid, the Off column is a rest, and having an E there means that it will play an E next, when it leaves that column. It takes time to get used to the app, it's different. Not everyone will like it, if you don't, that's fine
@ANDV-wq5mw
@ANDV-wq5mw 4 ай бұрын
@@GavinskisTutorials As I understand it the "note off" column should mean off, no note playing. It should be self explanatory, so I still don't get why it's playing that "E". Like you said - "it is a rest". So even if the "A" has little probability, it should only play the "A" sparsely and then rest, not playing the E note at all, cause the E is only selected in the off column from what I see. It's either a bug or it's made in a weird way and "off note" and "rest" doesn't mean the same thing to the developer. Of course I don't have to like it, but I'm watching your tutorials to see if an app is a fit for me, and I got puzzled about the "off" column still playing, and thought about asking. I honestly want to like it, cause I like the demos you made with this app. Thanks for taking the time to reply!
@GavinskisTutorials
@GavinskisTutorials 4 ай бұрын
@ANDV-wq5mw no worries! It's not a bug though, that is exactly the intended behaviour..it just takes time to wrap your head around. Also if you have several voices going at once that can confuse things. Worth maybe also taking a look at the manual on the dev's site. Long story short - if you have an E selected in the Off section, you will have a chance of E notes playing.
