In some states it's actually illegal to charge a card fee, and is called "payment type discrimination." But one loophole you can utilize is to raise your rate, then offer a cash discount.

Kiki Pro Cleaning same in the UK, shops just raised the prices to cover the card fees. Difference is, in America I believe 50-60% of payments is still cash, 40-50% credit card. In the UK 75% is debit card, 20% credit card and 5% cash. I think America is a bit behind in payment technology though. With signatures you could literally write down “This is fraud” on the signature pad and it would still take the payment! In the UK you need a pin to spend over £30 and signatures just don’t exist in payments.

UK processing rates are so much lower then in America. Some processors like PaymentSense only charge 0.5% on each transaction. It’s illegal to charge a fee to the customer, but you can just raise your prices for everyone to get around it.

We got the Square Terminal recently. We chose Square because of the low rate, and no monthly rental charge. When on the road and you get someone flagging you down for snow removal the ability to take credit cards and debit cards is essential. People are more likely to pay a little higher rate for a one time service if they can just throw it onto their credit card. So far we have encountered NO problems with Square.

Good tip on the Square account. This is similar to how I explain on-line shopping to older folks who hesitate to put their details out there...I tell them to go and open a free, debit-card account and only drop money in when they need to make a purchase. These accts. (so far) have zero fees. Cheers from AU, Bill!

Thank you Tracy, I'm glad you liked the video. I have it on my to-do list to make a newer version as that vid is getting a little dated. Square now has a customer service number and they have flat lined their fees. Also as a side note I have never had a bad experience with them. Nothing but good things to say about square at this point. Thanks again for the post and tips for older people, I hadn't even thought about that angle with the free checking accounts.

@ H Lef- For some reason youtube does not allow me to reply to some comments, I believe it has something to do with how they were entered. This happened with yours so I hope you see this... Your question is how much of a fee to pass along. I would say the entire amount. I actually just had this conversation the other day with a customer of mine who sales credit card readers and systems to restaurants and businesses and she told me that a lot of her customers are starting to do this. Not the guys who deal in small transactions but the ones who get hit with bigger numbers are doing it on a regular basis. I know a guy who charges his snow plow customers 4 percent when he is getting charged around 3 percent but he is banking on a manualy key in that will cost him more. I believe square has dropped their manualy key in price to under 4 percent but I haven't confirmed that yet. I'm going to do a video on this so keep an eye out for it BurbBilly

Jayne, I have been very happy with Square. If you browse the comments you will see that some people have had some issues but if they had set up a different account for Square and moved the money when it was deposited I think 99% of them would have been fine. Overall they are way cheaper than what was being offered when I got my business going around 2002 and again I have had zero problems. I wish you all the best with your business endeavor!

Hey Billy, I never thought of the convenience fee. What would be an appropriate convenience fee amount? Thanks!
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 9 жыл бұрын
Jarrod Padilla If I do one it will be 3% for a swipe and 6% for a key in. Last I checked square is charging 2 something percent for swipe and high 5 percent for the key in. I had a cab driver tell me that he automatically adds it in but I don't think that's being up front about it. If you tell people up front, Yes I accept credit cards but I charge a convenience fee for using them, then it gives them the option for check or cash. What I got a lot of was people trying to rack up points or miles on their card because it's an added benefit for them to use it but once you put the cost associated with using a credit card back on them suddenly their points don't look so attractive and they whip out the check book. Hope this helps BurbBilly

and i know its sells not sales...i just woke up when I wrote this :-) The customer I mentioned told me that they her company ranges on what is charged from a 1 plus percent fee up to over 3 percent based on the credit card...so a person charging a 4 percent fee is covering all possible cost. If a customer doesn't want to pay the fee they can always write a check or pay in cash

That is a GREAT idea about having a 2nd account to protect your money. I had that happen with TSYS. Really pissed me off. I couldn't use the Square app on a LG2 piece of hardware.......I just ordered a Samsung. I do have a personal bank account in the same bank where my business account is, but I think just for the hell of it, I'll open a 3rd account so I can't protect the credit card charges. Thanks for the tip....

Very enlightening. I have a bit of a longwinded question that I hope you might be able to answer for me because I can't contact SALES without allowing Square to run a credit report and verify my identity. This seems like a huge red flag when I have to BECOME a client just to ask the questions necessary to determine if I WANT to be a client. I understand that "Cross-border card payments are unsupported. This means that card transactions attempted outside of the country where you activated your Square account can’t be processed with Square. However, you can accept cash transactions while traveling internationally." This doesn't fully answer the question and isn't entirely clear. I'm not interested in taking intrnational payments or performing work for clients who are located outside of my home country. That description could mean that all transactions cease to function, or it could simply mean that international cards aren't accepted outside of your home country. It implies that I'm trying to take a foreign payment in the foreign country that I'm in, but it doesn't really touch upon whether you can continue to use this while traveling to maintain a business which is physically located in your home country. Let me give you an example: I'm a Canadian. My Canadian business is run online, so I can work from anywhere. If I go to my winter home in Florida for six months and work remotely, can I continue to manually charge my Canadian clients in Canadian funds by keyed-in credit card number? Or does the reader use my IP address and location to determine that I'm outside of my home country and stop allowing me to take payments altogether? This product would be an absolute win if people like me could take it with us and continue to do businesses aboard (in our home currency and with clients who are located back home). Because while there are serious implications to illegally working in a foreign country without a visa or permit, there is absolutely nothing illegal about remotely maintaining an online business which operates (and is located) in your home country while you, yourself, are abroad. Business owners have to be able to maintain their businesses while traveling, and they shouldn't have to wait weeks on end to receive payments simply because they're away from their physical office. Preventing transactions while abroad is kind of missing the mark here, especially for modern enterpreneurs in the age of internet startups. We're not tethered to offices or desks. We travel, we work remotely, we take working vacations. We need a product that allows us to continue accepting payments back home even when we're 1000 miles away. Granted, my system allows payments to be made by email, but the nature of my business requires certain clients to make deposits, and they typically provide a number to be keyed-in manually. So, to reiterate: If I go to my winter home in Florida for six months, can I continue to charge my Canadian clients in Canadian funds via the keyed-in method, for business transactions made and performed in Canada? Or does the reader use my IP address and location to determine that I'm outside the country and stop allowing me to take all forms of payment? And with that said, if the reader doesn't work outside of the country, does the app still continue to process keyed-in transactions or does the app cease to function as well?

.I did a job for $565.00 worth of work including parts , in which I had paid for the parts and SQUARE deducted the entire amount of money from my account without consulting me about the problem. So in other words they sided with the card holder who would be my customer and I not only lost the money for my labor, I also lost my money for the parts that I had paid for with my money to begin with. I will not deal with SQUARE any longer if they will do transactions in the future this way. It cost me lots of money

Chantel, You're very welcome and thank you for the post/question. I myself have not talked to square, haven't needed to as they have treated me very well to date and I have had zero problems with any of my transactions. I get very few comments that are negative about them so I have to say they seem to be doing it right. I would recommend them if you are looking for a company to use for credit cards. It's crazy how 15 years ago I had sales people trying to sell me credit card readers with contracts that would have cost me thousands of dollars and now it's as easy as picking up a reader and downloading an app. Hope this helped, take care

Thanks for all the info! I might get the square for my distributing business. I also make bath and body products using essential oils...would you say its worth it for smaller transactions? I know so many people don't carry cash these days and if I were set up at an event and someone wanted to buy some bath bombs, lipchap and face toner I want them to be able to pay with a card.
@burbbilly

+Xanthia Gonzales Yes it would work good for that. I'd maybe look at factoring the cost into your pricing as opposed to adding it on at the transaction. Figure you will lose around 3% on every card transaction if you don't.

I have not been running a lot of transactions lately but still have the account set up. I have used it for years now and never had a problem with it. I did see the instant feature but did not need it so didn't use it. It's nice to know its there though

Thanx Billy. I found your tut very informative. Like the separate account idea. I'm just getting set up. I will use it for my estate sale as opposed to opening a business, etc. Do you know if I don't collect local tax, would the state still require filing on that income?
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 8 жыл бұрын
I think that varies state by state, you'll want to make a quick call to your accountant for that question. If you are required to pay any additional taxes on the money you earn you want to make sure it's factored into the price. Plus knowing that people will be paying with cards I would add 3-5% to every price right off the bat. Hope this helps and I wish you all the best with your estate sale. (for the 3-5 % just round up on the smaller items, if you're thinking 8 bucks maybe run it at 10 and see where it goes. You can always come down in price but you can't go up)

Also just an FYI I have found that when I have sold things at a yard sale or on craigslist etc.... people are not afraid to ask about a lower figure right out of the gate. Sometimes to the point of being obnoxious. If you price it spot on you will find yourself being haggled into a lower than asked for price so running it a bit higher helps with the negotiations(some people just have to get it lower than what the sticker said so doing it this way you get what you want and they get what they want;-))....also if they say they are paying in cash you can factor that in to your final decision.

Square took 1500.00 of my money without reason and I had the customer go to their credit card company to get their own money back from this company. They took the money and said they would hold the money for 90 days. Today they (square) contacted me about the money and I asked them to return the money back to the customer.

What happened? You did a transaction and they just held the money? No reason? Thats a huge problem if they are doing that. I thought a customer had to initiate a complaint to get the money held

I have a lawn service business I just ordered my square. I have some customers that want to pay with credit card, I know there is a fee of 2.75%. I want to know how can I add the fee to what there are suppose to pay me. For example if there are paying me $30.00 does the fee automatically adds up to them. do I have to type in the amount with the fee already included.
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 8 жыл бұрын
+marissa gonzalez I would tell a customer that if they pay with a card I charge a convenience fee of 3.5 or 4 percent. The reason you run a little higher is some cards charge at a higher rate due to the card perks or if you have to key it in. Then I just do the math before I ring it out. I don't have too many charges in my business, most people pay with a check but if they request it I do mention the fee before I ring it out. If you don't put the fee in there you just lost 3-4 percent of your job, do that on a lot of jobs and it starts to add up.

Hi. Just set up my Square for upcoming antique show. They asked me to charge $1.00 to start. I keyed it in manually. They then deposited $.81 into my account. That would be 19%???? Need to get this understood.
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 7 жыл бұрын
They don't charge 19% so no worries there :-) I think what they are doing is testing your bank account. It's been awhile but if I remember right they will deposit a test amount in your account to have you verify it. Google did the same thing to me when I set up my google account, they deposited $.22 then asked me how much got deposited to verify. If you look at their home page the percentages are spelled out and I have found them to be very affordable compared to what else is out there (and easy to use) Always recommend using a 2nd account though and transferring your money out as soon as you can to protect yourself in event of a dispute. Here's wishing you all the best for you upcoming show, and thanks for the post/question.

Build the processing fee into your selling price then offer a discount for cash purchases. Since it's illegal (normally - it is at the very least a violation of the service agreement) to charge customers more to use a credit card, the loophole is to charge those who use cash less.
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 7 жыл бұрын
That's one way to get around it. I believe I've covered the legality of it on other comments, you always want to get your legal advice from a lawyer and not youtube but as I said in the video why is the utility company allowed to charge a fee for using a credit card if it's not legal to do so?
@HeWentThattaway
@HeWentThattaway 7 жыл бұрын
I've always thought that utilities and government entities (schools, municipalities, etc.) were able to do so as part of their service agreements with the credit card processors. They probably get special consideration because they are not-for-profit entities. I am just assuming this, of course. Every service agreement I've ever signed has stated I could not charge the customer more for using a CC.

you are legally allowed to charge a convenience fee. The fee must be a flat or fixed price rather than a percentage of the sale.

I do have one question about the 2nd bank account. My experience is that you should have a separate bank account in another bank to avoid someone going into any of your multiple accounts in the same bank. Is that true?
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 7 жыл бұрын
double check me with your banker if you are going to do this but each account is a stand alone. Unless you have overdraft protection on the accounts that tells the bank you want them to go into the other account to cover an overdraft.

Vinnie Pantoja For the higher amounts it makes sense especially if your prices are really competitive, it's hard to lose an extra hundred on something your close on the numbers to begin with. That said there is no perfect solution for all business so what may work for one may not work for another. Some guys may be able to bury the cost into their price and it's not a big deal, you just have to figure out what works for you and run with it.

I have a problem with swiping; the card doesn't go through most of the time. Is it the reader or another problem? I could do it manually but there is an extra charge plus a 15 cent charge.

marfair hobbit pick up another reader and try it, they are only $10/$15 and you get a credit back that will apply to your account. You can also try reloading the software and see if that corrects it. You may be missing an update. The other thing that I have seen affect a swipe is if there is a bad wireless signal.

I read the practice section on square, and after practicing with my own credit cards I was able to have a near perfect swipe. It's important to make sure the left hand side of the card is constantly connected to the reader. Thanks for the info, much appreciated!
