Introduction Snippet:
In the late 80’s, Square, also known as Square Soft outside of Japan, created a series that would forever change the video game market and help popularize RPGs around the world. This series would of course be called Final Fantasy. These games would take players on epic adventures that blended unique stories, compelling battle systems, intriguing characters, and expansive exploration. Many people nowadays think Square’s history begins with the Final Fantasy series, however the company had been around for nearly half a decade before the first game ever saw the light of day. It’s safe to say that the Square we know today, now named Square Enix, has found great success in the gaming industry and risen to become one of the largest video game publishers ever. This was not always the case though as the Japanese company’s earlier days were much more tumultuous before they finally found their golden goose, Final Fantasy. This is the story of a business that found success in the video game market, then nearly lost it, before an RPG no one had ever heard of would save them from bankruptcy. This is Square’s history before Final Fantasy.

Back in the days you traded cartridges with friends, I remember one of them gave this one with a crystal globe and a sword and axe crossed called Final Fantasy, he said "that game is garbage, take it for free". I looked at the picture and I was enchanted, as a good 90s nerd I was deep into fantasy games. I had no idea that Square saved their asses with this game though, I mean they really did an amazing job here because to me FF was the best RPG I ever played in NES. Great work as usual Chris, you are a gift to us who enjoy history of the things that made our reality better, out of fantasy!

I’m a huge final fantasy fan, and also impressed by squaresoft as a company, particularly from 1987-2000. They knew how to make most of a system’s hardware and push it even further. Their discography of titles before Final Fantasy, gave them some good game development experience. Thanks for taking the time to list such games-most I didn’t really know about! Enjoyed the video!

Stellar video bro. The humble beginnings of Square laid the foundations for Final Fantasy as seen in their titles in this video. The RPG origins were there, they just needed a game to bring it all together...and so Final Fantasy was born.

Honestly it's still amazing how Nintendo decided to completely ignore.. And let loose RARE entertainment square enix.. and maybe buddy up with Capcom.. I mean gaming companies that gave us.. GOLDENEYE 64 FINAL FANTASY MEGA MAN AND RESIDENT EVIL.. All Nintendo would say na we're good.. we have Game freak and Pokemon... I mean if Nintendo decided to buy out.. square enix Capcom and rare before Microsoft. Could Nintendo be the biggest publisher ever? With hindsight probably yes..
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade 2 жыл бұрын
Like you said, every developer/publisher purchase is a big risk that could go either way without having hindsight so it's hard to really know for sure how things would have panned out had Nintendo purchases these companies. I'm pretty sure Microsoft just had money that Nintendo really couldn't match (or didn't want to match) for the Rare acquisition. It would certainly be interesting to see the alternate timeline if that deal hadn't gone through.
@memyopinionsche6610
@memyopinionsche6610 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I get it.. but if they give a chance to square enix rare or Capcom.. and throw them some cash.. Just like game freak.. The only Nintendo would own Pokemon but final fantasy and mega Man.. As well as Street fighter.. hindsight is 20/20 I guess.. I mean if game freak decided to go Fu to Nintendo.. Got tired of there bull... Take Pokemon somewhere else.. Death nail to Nintendo? Game freak was so loyal to Nintendo all the years.. But then suddenly gets annoyed and decided.. now we'll take Pokemon to Sony and Microsoft.. Could happen..
