Intro dialogue: Survival Horror. An action-adventure subgenre created in the mid-1990s to describe certain video games that would try to frighten its players using a variety of different methods. Quite often these games would be set in unsettling locations and try to make its players feel less in control by constricting their amount of ammunition, health, and inventory space. While a few games set the stage for survival horror, one in particular defined it, Resident Evil. The game shocked the world when it first hit store shelves in 1996 and inspired countless sequels, spinoffs and clones. Many people often consider the next 5 to 6 years after Resident Evil’s initial release to be the golden age of survival horror games with its sequels being critically acclaimed and other popular series like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame making their debut. Near the tail end of this golden age, however, one person was becoming frustrated with the Resident Evil series’ progression, its original director, Shinji Mikami. The man that would also go on to oversee and direct its fourth entry, Resident Evil 4.

I wasn't a big lover pf RE 4 when it first released. I didn't see what was so special about that others did. I eventually gave it another try, and finally finished it for the first time in nearly 20 years. I enjoyed it but still don't understand how some hate 5 but love 4. They are both basically the same games, gameplay wise, just different characters and story. I can't wait for the remake. As soon as I found out anout it I got that shit pre ordered. I have just found you yesterday and am absolutely loving these videos. Your production quality is through the roof. I'm looking forward to going through them all and future video.

Thanks for the kind words, glad you’re enjoying the channel! RE4 was a really special game for me since I went through it with a few friends over the course of like 3 or 4 back to back nights while drinking and eating fast food. Some great memories there! I think RE5 was a pretty fun game too, but the forced co-op was why a lot of people weren’t as crazy about it and things got even a bit more over the top (boulder punching 😂). I’ve got the RE4 remake collectors edition preordered so I’m definitely psyched! It looks great so far, but hoping it lives up to the hype.

Even though Resident Evil 4 is my favorite video game ever made, I really wonder what it would've been like if the Hookman version wasn't cut. That version looked amazing from a technical standpoint and was closer to the roots of the original games
@RewindArcade

Agreed! Instead of the full blown remake that is apparently in development at Capcom, I’d have loved for them to try and tackle the original “Hookman” version again.

@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 Yeah, 100% agree! I think if there's one game that doesn't need a full blown remake, it's RE4. A v3 of RE1 would actually be pretty awesome especially with modern tech since the HD version we got is pretty much just the GameCube remake with some extra bells and whistles.

How about making a video of Shadow of the Colossus? It's third person over the shoulder shooting mechanics, traversal, platforming, boss battles, art style and combat gameplay is as equally influential as RE4 for the PS3 era of games like Uncharted, TLOU, Horizon, God of War, iNfamous, Lords of Shadow, etc

Really great look into the interesting history of this highly influential masterpiece. It is such a perfect game in its execution and stands on its own as a tense but also satisfying to play and very replayable entry in the series that has shaped many favourites of recent years like God of War and Dead Space. If the Remake will be going back to the main internal team at Capcom now, I will be very interested to see how they adapt this game for next gen. How much will it stick to the original and how much do they plan to add or expand on? It will be very interesting to see but there is no denying the care and attention that has gone into this game and how it still stands as a fun and varied experience even today.
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah, it’s really an amazing game and one I play through almost once every year. I won’t lie that I am worried about them doing a remake since I feel like RE4 is still a near perfect game on its own even these days. I do agree that I’m curious to see how they handle everything, especially the story and characters. I worry that they’ll change a lot of the more sillier B-movie scenes and dialogue to make them more dark and edgier. Time will tell though, thanks again for watching!

@@RewindArcade While I do share some concern, the game has received many ports with no new content for many years so I think it will be quite interesting to see the game reimagined with new technology. Thinking about the dark, rainy village or the gothic castle with today's tech is really exciting. Even if it does make some tonal changes, if it still hits the same story/character beats and scenarios but adds new ones that expand on the game in meaningful ways, seeing RE4 in a new way is going to be interesting. Like they might lean more to the horror side with the plagas infection that Leon/Ashley has and the cult. I'm sure we will still see the continued relationship from RE2 Remake with Leon/Ada and still have the merchant warping around giving Leon upgrades. I think Capcom knows based on the dev team change early on that RE4 is one of their top most cherished games and they know they need to take the time to do things right. I have faith but will see from the reveal how I feel about the new direction. Who knows maybe it will just be a graphical overhaul with smaller content additions but is mostly the same. We will see.
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, I’m both worried and excited for it, haha. Capcom has been pretty good with its games and decisions lately so I am optimistic they will treat it with care. It will definitely be great seeing all the locations reimagined and retooled. I think my major concerns come from Final Fantasy 7 Remake. I loved the original, but felt like FF7R was really a mess as a remake (unpopular opinion, I know). Everything was a lot prettier and more fleshed out, but it kind of lost track of what made the original work so well with its pacing, themes, and story, at least in my opinion. I think that game alone has made me very cautious of remakes for some of my favorite series, but I’m still open to seeing what Capcom can do. 👍

@@RewindArcade Fair enough. I think FF7R focussed on Midgar in the same way as the original with a quite linear, guided tour before leaving and getting to find out more about the characters and world. I really like a lot of the moments between Cloud and Aerith and making Barrett much more of a leader/father figure. The fight for the planet is there but requires the bombing of reactors which affects the people but the Shinra corporation scheme in the background with experimentation and shifting blame onto Avalanche. I think it hit all the major beats of the original but has glimpses of where they plan to expand on the game beyond retelling the original game. I have watched over the Maximilian Dood and Easy Allies podcast discussing how FF7 Remake is actually a sequel rather than just reimagining the original. Lots of Aerith and Sephiroth's actions speak to there being more going on, almost like they are from the future and trying to guide events their own way behind the scenes of what normally is destined to happen. The Yuffie DLC also helps to ground Yuffie more as a character before she has to work with the main party and also giving a small extra few scenes to tie into the main party continuing the same way as the original. However there may be a timeline with Zack going on at the same time that might show more than what the main cast will see/experience and giving you more of what wouldn't be possible to see in the original timeline like Jessie performing at the Golden Saucer etc/maybe Aerith is already gone in Zack's timeline. It definitely made me see the direction of the Remake in a new light and found it interesting as personally I don't want the games to be completely predictable. Sure it does deviate in some ways but there was always the sense that it stayed on course and in line with the original with the same story being told but with a new perspective. It has been almost 25 years so there is far more to juggle now to bring a modern day remaking of the original. The Remake definitely ensures the main elements were there but had some more time to set up more of the characters. Generally I thought the overall music, presentation and battles were all elevated quite well but it's fine if you didn't feel quite the same in some of the story elements. It's the prelude to a larger project and changes in pacing etc needed to be made to make it a full game rather than like in the original where it was the first few hour prologue before letting you out into the world. I think that Capcom with Resident Evil 4 isn't quite so complex and they have a lot they can build off of from the original with it being a third person action game with plot elements like with Leon/Ada likely being a direct continuation of their encounters in RE2R. Similar to the layout of the police station, I don't really see the areas being entirely reworked but it will become clear in time how different it will be. The original will always be there and is thankfully very accessible.
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree that RE4 Remake is a much more simplistic project in terms of scope and that I think that will help it make transition a lot easier. Still though, whenever you remake something that doesn’t necessarily need a remake, it sometimes doesn’t turn out in the best way. My thoughts on FF7R are VERY complicated and a full discussion would take way too long to type out here, hahaha. I will say that while I think the game was a messy remake and filled with a lot of missteps, it also did a lot right and had a great OST, beautiful reimaginings of its locales, and some pretty fun gameplay. FF7R has probably made for some of the best conversations and debates I’ve had for a video game in a long, long time. That said, I’d have really liked to see an alternate timeline with how the game would’ve come out had Sakaguchi been involved as a producer/director.
