ABOUT MY VIDEOS:

Hi, I'm Phillip. I'm an ex-professional squash coach and was lucky enough to work with some incredible coaches, including Jonah Barrington and practice with some amazing players including Jahangir Khan and Ross Norman.
I was also one of the squad coaches for the England Junior boys for a few years.
Although I no longer coach squash professionally, I feel I still have knowledge and insight to offer.

Hi Philip, tried your practice couple of times now and it is great! Even got some club members to join me. Today did a session with another player at the same time on court. One on backhand and one on forehand side. Only with 'side to side' one person uses the front side of the court and the other the back side. It's fun doing it with two!

Ended up practicing yesterday as my playing partner failed to show up. Definitely need to work on my drop shots and back hand drives from deep but it's getting there.

Thank you so much for the videos. Could you explain a bit more about shot 5 (hard and low kills) ? There were no overdubs for this part, and I struggle a lot with this type of shot. What should I focus on, etc.

OMG, that is so stupid of me. I'm so sorry. I have to admit that I rushed the release of this video. I won't do that again. The fifth shot requires a slightly larger swing than shot three, but not a full swing. You are trying to slice the ball and hit it quite hard. Your objective is to keep it quite low and very close to the wall. You are trying to rush your opponent, and give them as little opportunity to hit a good return. You may even win the point with this shot, but you are NOT trying to hit a winner - just a shot that causes them trouble.

Thanks for your great efforts, really appreciated especially the poster numbering, I was struggling switching between timer, poster, and video to know the routine to do, really genius. I've a question, I've noticed in some matches a lot of top players are taking a volley ball in middle line and cut it as low kill, If can explain to do this shot

Thank you for your great videos! Me and my 11 yrs old son have done this solo-practise routine for a while and its great. We have test it with a high bounce ball - red dot, as well. Whats your opinion about that? Best regards Ulrik Älmefur Stockholm Sweden.

I'm glad you like my videos, and I am also glad to hear you have both been solo practicing. With regard to the red dot, there's too much snobbery regarding the dots on the balls. Too many people think that once they reach a certain standard, going "back" to a red dot is wrong - it's not. Use whichever ball is suitable for the conditions. I have NO hesitation in using a red dot if the court is really cold or if a routine is difficult to keep the ball warm. In fact, in my next side-to-side video, I DO use a red dot for one of the routines.

You are absolutely correct and I have started that process, but I'll be really honest with you, it's much more time consuming that I thought. I will keep at it though. I plan to have all my videos subtitled properly before the end of the year.

Thank you. I was in discussion with a ball machine importer/manufacturer to create a series of videos about exercises you can do with it, but unfortunately that didn't happen. I have to admit that I haven't used a cannon very much and wouldn't want to answer without more experience. That said, using it for anything that would be hard to set up if you were on court alone, would be good. Ideally, things that you play shots that don't come back to your hitting position.

Squash Coach Phillip ... thanks for the prompt reply - very much appreciated. I set aside a practice time for about two hours once every two weeks - I really enjoy this time alone on the court. I practice your exercises faithfully for about 30 minutes then end with the cannon. Prior to starting squash in September of 2019 I was a competitive racquetball player for 40+ years (I’m 71 years of age). The switch to squash has been difficult but I truly do embrace the change and am learning to love squash and want to learn as much as I can - like teaching an old dog new tricks!! Thanks again coach 😀

What makes it that you say the ball should come of the back wall? Because other channels say pick it before it hits the wall. What different skills do you train by either letting it go or taking it early? Great video again by the way

Hi Tom. I say leave it off the backwall because it develops a better swing. Essentially, you could have ANY style of swing if you hit the ball before it hits the backwall (within safety reasons, of course) but only a good swing will allow you to hit a well-timed shot after it has hit the wall (again, depending on how far it bounces back!). The timing of before or after is very different. When the balls hits the backwall, it is moving away from your racket and you have the backwall to worry about. I am not against practicing drives along the wall where you hit it before, it's just that for this routine I selected after as I wanted a contrast to the other shots. This is a training routine and not a technical swing video, so I don't mention the technique. During a match selecting whether to hit the ball before or after the backwall is a choice that must be made based on many factors and I plan to make a shot selection video one day. Just remember, hit it before if you don't think it will have enough pace to hit after or if you want to rush your opponent.

Hey coach. Awesome video. Can you please give me your recommendation for roughly how many times I should play squash a week or a month? That includes club fixtures, sessions with a face to face coach, solo sessions, other fitness sessions? Appreciate your help!

@@BetterSquash thanks coach. I’m 20 nearly 21. I played at state level during high school, but left the game for 3 years (not by choice) I’ve begun training again and want to get back into competitions within a month or when I get my technique back up to a decent level. I’m pretty driven and want to take my game to as high a level as I can, to put it simply. Money is no problem and I work 4 days a week til 4.30pm, so have lots of evenings as well as 3 full days off a week to do some form of training.

My squash has improved after the side to side wall in solo practice 1 video. But in straight shots of the wall, I can't get the ball bounce off the back wall, both forehand and backhand. Do I lack strength or is the technique. I try and hit the ball as hard as I can. How can I improve.

I'm glad to hear you feel the side-to-side has helped your squash. As far as getting the ball to bounce off the back wall, can you do it with a red dot? If you can, but can't do it with a single or double yellow, then it might be your technique. I suggest you try with a really hot single yellow, and only do deep drives for a few minutes and then another drill to get the ball very hot again.

I couldn't help noticing your shirt, do you actually spend time in Eibar? Actually, I'd say this video has been made/filmed in Eibar... that court looks kind of familiar to me.

I used to practice in Eibar, but haven't been on court with anybody in about a year. It was filmed in Amorebieta, which is where I live.
