How To Use A Weightlifting Belt (IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK)

When most use a weightlifting belt, they do so incorrectly. Ask yourself if this scene sounds familiar. You look towards the squat rack and see an athlete struggling with all their might to fasten their belt as tightly around their stomachs as possible as if they are donning an 18th century corset.

Proper use of a belt is much more than just wearing it tightly around your stomach! In order to properly use a belt, you must breathe “into the belt”. If you only cinch it tight, you miss out on the benefits the belt has to offer. Always think about expanding your stomach into the belt and then bracing against it.
If you’re interested in purchasing a high quality belt that will last a lifetime, check my Cardillo belt here: americannutritioncenter.com/?...

If you read the norse saga's Thor used a weight lifting belt. If he was about to do something that required ultra strength he would put his belt on first. So even the vikings recognised the power of the belt.

This is the lesson I’ve been waiting for! How to create intra-abdominal pressure. The example you did in the beginning of the video really shows how it works. No wonder too many people get injured while doing squats and deadlifts. They’re not doing this important step! Thanks for saving our backs. 👍🏼

@bailewen Can you elaborate on pause squats and how they relate to the conversation, Mr. Riddler?
@bailewen
@bailewen 9 ай бұрын
@@jason2014 Cuz pause squats tax your intra-abdominal pressure more than anything else I've ever experienced. I'm only an intermediate lifter. Pause squats were from my coach cuz I was mostly failing sets when I stopped being able to inhale at the top. My chest would just collapse and I couldn't get a good deep breath in any more. So we started doing pause squats. Breath in normally up top, hold it, down, keep holding, up, breath out at the top again. It's like just adding time under tension for your diaphragm and chest cavity.

Would love to see a follow up to this with regards to use and positioning. Mostly how it relates to squats and how to prevent a belt affecting form (pushing knees out wider, or if it keeps you more upright). Also stuff like comfort, breaking in a belt, how often to use a belt.

I can't deny how much a belt has helped me with my strength. As a beginner I hit a plateau with my deadlifts and squats and struggled with progressive overload. With lever arch belts, should the lever be set to feel tight pre or post brace? This might sound like a stupid question but I can''t find the answer easily. My belt can feel tight with a good brace before I actually clasp the belt and the belt can inhibit my diaphragmatic breathing before I brace when it is clasped. Do you think I would get more out of the belt if I loosened it slightly and refitted it so it's sized to my braced core rather than relaxed core?

Here's a question out of left field: I have a thrusters workout as a core of my fitness regimen. (A deep squat, then an overhead press. Ideally, I'd be doing this with a wall-ball, but I workout in my kitchen, so I use a sandbag.) It's a HIIT workout, with descending reps from 25 to 8 over a dozen sets. My question is "Should I even be using a weight-belt at all?"
@Paul-Weston
@Paul-Weston 2 жыл бұрын
I would say if you can do 25 reps, the weight is so light you don't even need a belt. In fact a belt would hold you back, as your core is using the belt for support. If you don't use a belt then your core needs to work harder to support your back. You said you go from 25 to 8 reps, I'm assuming the lower rep range is due to fatigue, and not because you're using progressively heavier sandbags. If you have got a huge collection of sandbags in your kitchen, and the heaviest you can only lift for 8 reps, I'd say for 10 reps and below use a belt. If the low rep range is due to progressive fatigue, you don't need a belt, just make sure you maintain good form and don't just throw it up anyway you can. This is when you see injuries in crossfit, when people attempt to lift weights in a sloppy style due to fatigue while getting cheered on by their teammates.
@probitionate
@probitionate 2 жыл бұрын
@@Paul-Weston Paul, thank you _so_ much for taking no small amount of time to respond to me. It was a very generous thing to do. Yes, the workout is a tough one, but not from a 'weightlifting' point-of-view. (It's one I have to really psyche myself up for it; it's fourteen minutes of mind-numbing time in my pain-cave.) I know my form is good, I've never had any issues feeling I've tweaked anything, and I've been doing it for years now. If I can be a little cheeky here, your opinion: I've taken to using a band around my knees, and I have no idea what the exact impact is on the workout. (The idea was something I picked up along the way; I am _constantly_ augmenting and revising my regimen.) Any thoughts?
