My Dad has lifted throughout his life. At 67 he had to have metal rods placed in his neck and the majority of his lumbar spine fused. After almost two years he’s lifting again and back in fantastic shape. It’s helped tremendously to alleviate pain and his recovery. Myself a disabled vet with 14 herniated & bulging discs have used weight training with the same results. Lifting is so great for you and it doesn’t take much to reap the rewards.

Absolutely, man. It bothers me to see people may age (late 30s) start gaining weight and complaining of ailments while saying “Well I’m just getting old.” And it’s not even just now. This was when they were approaching their mid 30s. I heard a couple times that unspecified back pain was one of the most common reasons people miss work (idk, something like that). And it’s almost always due to simple weakness of the core.

This points already been made but my opinion is that one should also get their diet and regimen in shape as they age. You can get away with a dirty bulk here and there and overtraining when youre young, but when youre hitting your later years keeping that same unhealthy stress on your body is whatll convince you to quit alltogether. Youll need to start eating more vegetables and plant based proteins (keep your eggs, dairy, and red meat or even eat more eggs and dairy, just be sure to eat lots of greens and trail mix) and most of all youll need to really watch your form, be kind to your body, and rest as much as possible

Day 4 of 30 days straight of 5 sets 20 barbell squats 5 minute break between sets where clean the house a little prepare dinner and already seeing changes. Last rep still have a lot in the tank. Purpose to get range of motion and strengthen all the weakest links and cement all the mental cues for good form. I stop every 5 reps and march on the spot and do 4 2 leg calf raises so doing a sort of static yoke carry. Im feeling easy to breath, posture naturally better light on feet when gp for a walk. I want this to be my base which it looks like it will be. What was heavy hard day one is almost soothing day 4. Very happy with changes and suprised happening so quick. Im guessing /hoping last week will do a heavy set every other day and see how that goes. . Feel like its got rid of the cobwebs some how, had some family coming over day 3 and had to clean house mow lawn. Did whole lot and no lose of momentum. After cement squat would like to add deadpift next month or kettle bells.

Lifting is dangerous at every age. It's good for your muscles and bones.......but it's bad for your joints. As somebody who now has back problems but used to lift routinely 500 600 700 lb and has actually picked up 900+ off the rack.. Just to see what it felt like....(the Olympic bar was like a noodle... It probably had 3 in of sag in it at each end)... Now I can't do anything overhead, deadlift, or squat because of back issues. Oh yes, it also made my feet go flat....... Resistance training is good within some moderate limits. Your body was not designed or intended to lift heavy weights. Quite frankly running and cardio is the best thing you can do for your health overall as you get older. In conjunction with some lighter resistance training.

Recently heard an amazing comment on Zack Telander's podcast. A guest said that Americans are gravely "under muscled". Considering we will steadily lose muscle mass as we age, we should be building muscle so when we do start to lose it, we keep most of it.

I've been working in the leisure industry for more than 25 years. I do think in the last 5-10 years, I've been singing more and more older people doing resistance training. I definitely think they are starting to get the message.

I mean my grandpa was jogging around up until 5 years ago and now he’s 83. He still does move around a lot so, that’s a lot better than most. He also was a chronic smoker and I’m really impressed that he was able to jog around and move around as much as he did. Thankfully he doesn’t smoke anymore

I started Weightlifting 7 months ago and I'm feeling absolutely awesome again. I've lost 30 lbs from 240 now 210, from looking to buy 40" waist pants now back to 36". The joints are feeling brand new again too. Balance is back too.. Start out light(er) and progress...ease into it. One of the best things I've ever done ✔ 😃😃👍🥰 one of the major reasons I started again was shopping for the next size of pants 👖. Eff that, I said, I'm getting back in shape. DO IT or lose it. I'm 60 by the way, feeling 25

I’m now 71, been lifting most years since age 13. Now more than ever need to continue to “intelligently” lift, along with daily stretching and cardio. Squats are too taxing on the spine but I do full leg presses with 300kg for 8.

Bone density is great and all but I want to know how it affects the soft tissues where I’m more likely to get an injury. Do soft tissues become more injury prone as we age and to what degree does exercise prevent that if at all!

Well bone density is important because if you’re old enough you could fall and break a bone and then you’re fucked.

Well, you also lose contractile tissue as you age. If you lift to maintain your muscle mass your soft tissue will also be more resilient. Tendons and ligaments do not have their own independent blood supply like muscles do. They only get fed blood (and thus, can only get stronger and more resilient) if the surrounding tissues are used and pumped with blood. Lifting is a great way to do this.

My line of thought for a long time was "oh, there's not much point in living beyond 60, guess I'm calling it quits there". I figured it was only going downhill from there. Which is still true but it doesn't have to be a steep drop, it can be of gradual descent. Seeing folks in their late 60s, 70s, even 80s that can still lift and have good mobility and strength helped me realize life doesn't need to suck once I hit 60. Having an extra 30 years of living in relative comfort doesn't sound too shabby to me 😎

My dad does everything from cardio to weights and he’s almost 60. Doesn’t look his age, has had multiple back surgeries, and he’s still going ham in the weight room. His body is accustomed to it and it works great for him.

Fully agree…. BUT you cant just tell them to “lift weights.” Lots of my older patients thinks this means 5 lb pink dumbbells and using slectorized machines on the low settings. Really we’re talking about heavy-ish movements done while standing to give them strength to not fall over if they trip, to be able to Get off the ground and have increased bone density. It’s a shame there isn’t a simple standard goal set forth by geriatrics societies of easy-ish movements since as we’ve learned from Squat University there are many important nuances to a proper squat and deadlift that would frustrate many half-motivated people. I’m talking goals of , say, trap bar deadlift your body weight 5 times, farmers carry 30% of your body weight 100 meters, hindu squat 10 times, kettlebell swing 50 lbs for reps, and something else single leg. Oh and what about Turkish get ups?! Save the 5 lb curls and chair aerobics for the folks too weak to do anything else.
