I really liked that the show took the time to develop the characters outside of the game. We all expected the games to continue immediately but this gave the characters time to breathe. Before they eventually stop, forever.

actually the moments the old man pressed X I expected they would go back on their own. They hid the fact they could go back but it’s also kinda odd because they said if they don’t continue then the money goes to the families of the people that died. I don’t really see why that didn’t happen automatically the moment they left the game but I guess they expected a lot of them to come back anyway. The money going to the family could also have been a lie.

An interesting point about Sang-woo I haven’t seen around yet is his relationship with wealth. He’s got the highest debt, but because of what type of debt he has he’s not being pursued by thugs, and he still technically has enough liquid capital to buy whatever he wants at the convenience store and pay for Ali’s food/ride too. Because he’s committed white collar crimes he’s still got access to many privileges within a capitalist system, while Ali’s family has to flee and Gi-Hun can barely afford to eat.

A interesting point, but a bit overthinking. Was it ever said how much Ali own in debt? Not saying he didn't owe anything, but I believe Ali just wanted to get his family out of SK and back to his homeland in Pakistan. Sure he was dirt broke, but that was due to his boss never paying him. Though the real problem is when he fought with his boss and got him injured during said fight. Thats why he was in a panic mode to get his wife and son out of SK. He didn't want the cops to show up at their door and possible arrest her or more likely, tell her of what happen. While Gi-Hun main problem is that he always spends his money as soon as he get it. If he stops borrowing money as well as blowing whatever he has earn, he could be living better. Though the man in a cycle of borrow/earn money, spend it on gambling to make more, lose it and repeat. Meanwhile, Sang-woo isn't being left go because he rich or has money himself (He doesn't, he just has pocket change from the looks of it). He in hiding and is trying his best to stay hidden. Hell, he was probably gone for a day or two due to the squid games. So the cops/whatever government force is trying to find him have no idea where he is. That and, we have no idea if that is his house he went to to commit suicide, or if it was a hotel. Only reason why the Squid Games' people knew where he was is due to them keeping track of all the players. Last thing, and the main reason Sang-woo has money. He not naive (Ali) or stupid (Gi-Hun). Sure he made a lot of bad calls...I mean..a lot of bad calls. But to get to the spot he is in, he knows how money works and how to earn/save it. The man might still be "rich" compare to everyone else, but he owes a shit ton of money due to a lot of bad stock/financial calls.

@@Tiggy110 honestly though, I think sangwoo is just a bastard. Yes he's intelligent but from what we've seen in the show, sangwoo seems to have procured most of his success by manipulating and using other people. He's been in the corporate world for so long he believes that the "every man for himself" model is the only way. Yes, they are all trying to win the prize money, but most like ali and gi-hun believe in playing the games fairly and winning using the methods outlined. Sangwoo will do anything because he has a lust for his lost valor.

@@lilacbombs_5197 Oh, I know Sang Woo is a bastard. I get it, the games are to be played and you are suppose to win at any cost. Though the dude is super quick to turn on his fellow allies to save his own skin. Hell, even when he didn't even NEED to do it. He still did it because it would have weed more people out. Though sadly, its not only the corporate world that is "Every man for himself." The whole world is a "Everyone for themselves". From the highest corporate man to the lowest thug. If it can make someone quick buck, the majority of people are gonna take it. Which is why I can't truly fault Sang Woo. Sure, I hate his guts, but would anyone else be any different in that spot? I would like to say that I, myself, would be different. But I can't say for 100% certain. Which is why the series is so good imo. No one is 'good' or 'evil'. It just shows people at their lowest and how they handle it.

@@Tiggy110 I see your point yeah, but I also think the point of the show isn't that everyone's low/not inherently good, but rather economic despairity turns people to do monstrous things to eachother to compete. the VIPS/wealthy have every opportunity to stop playing the game, it's likely how they justify it to themselves- but really it's the wealthy and specifically us imperialism that is facilitating all of this.

My favorite thing about the title for this episode is that when you read "hell," after watching the first episode, you're expecting it to refer to the games and torture the players will be subject to, but in reality, it was referring to the real lives of the players and the "hell" that they endure outside of the games, making the games seem more inviting and merciful.

"Do people actually live like this?" - The place that the cop's missing brother was living in is a cheap inn, full of dorm-style small rooms. It's popular with backpackers and young people for short term stays but also the "not quite homeless yet but not quite home stable either" crowd, who practically live there. In the U.S these would be the semi-homeless permanently living out of a room in a motel6.

Even if this game isnt “real”, these situations, these problems are real to a lot of people: (north korean defectors are scammed daily trying to get loved ones across the border without getting caught by immigration in china or lessen the chances of them getting shot by soldiers (you have to bribe north korean soldiers to pass) - or migrant workers getting abused and tricked from being provided their full earnings - some even get sexually abused more because they’re migrant workers and fear can’t report due to deportation or threatened by their jobs, people run in debt from medical bills (in the US for example, is a common issue), and sure their are ppl w gambling issues, but it’s an addiction and like all addictions need to be treated holistically like everything else.) All sense of “logical” or “right way” doesn’t exist anymore when you have nothing to give or offer. You’re simply desperate. There’s nothing crazy about that. People even at their best levels, when gone through the absolute hell, might even slip into their worst versions of themselves. Thus the appeal of this show & why so many relate.

the voting system is a clever way to reveal character traits by showing the audience and without telling the audience. we realize the desperation and priorities of certain characters. Then, by showing how bad life is for people outside the games, we're able to sympathize and understand why so many people would willing risk their lives for this money. It adds grounded realism to the hyper-violent surrealism of the games. Great story telling.

if he loves his daughter and he had even a BIT of responsibilities, he would take the money and know that for his own daughters protection and safety (with people LITTERALLY coming for his organs and even signed up with sketchy people that landed him in said murder games to begin with) he should walk away from her life if he keeps on living like that... If you TRUELLY love someone, you do what's best for THEM, not for YOU. The best thing for his daughter is him either fixing his life, or if he continues like this... to walk away from his daughters life and know that at least his child is being taken care of by a family that is STABLE and SAFE.

This episode is the best one in the series IMO. It breaks your expectation by pulling them out of the game and makes us emphatize with the main characters by showing their life. That's some world building done in 1 episode people! In the end, when they go back to the game you understand them completely, even if you do not agree. For these people so low in life, the game is their only chance to get out of the mud, even if the price is your own life.

But in the Squid Game, we saw that he doctor knew beforehand what all games were going to be played and he passed the knowledge to others, so they had an unfair advantage over the other contestants. Same shit happens in real world, when ppl "cheat" their way to the top. Many of the survivors of a few games survived cuz of luck and not actual skill. Like Gi-Hun who chose to be last in Tug Of War. Similarly, in real world, some ppl are just more lucky than others. Bro I love Rana... Like ever since I seen the reactions since the Avatar Days she's grown so much...she used to be so shy of doing intros... But now she's the Media leader..and on her own she has the most followers on her own account before the normies and cause the normies without posting a picture...back then she never could do intros because she was so shy but after so much time she's confidently handling the intros for the normies while(no names will be said) keep forgetting the most simplist of things with 4000% confident. Rana, thank you for being a Normie.

She's literally moving to a whole last another state whereas your mom who has a possibility of dying is the person you live with. Yes it's a hard and shitty decision to come to but at least out of the two important people in your life you'll get to see one of them. And from a out of the TV show perspective it would have very much been possible that one his daughter turned 18 if she still wanted her real dad to be in her life she could always go back or she could visit.

some of y'all really come across as incredibly sheltered and ignorant through some of the things you'll casually throw out lmfao. like you severely underestimate just HOW close to debt and homelessness most people from the working class are at all times. just takes one high bill from an accident or a bunch of bills coming at you at once and next thing you know you can't pay rent, then you're homeless and can't afford food anymore either. the main thing that separates "normal people" from people like the characters in this show wasn't first and foremost their choices, but more often than not it's simply luck. made worse if they already weren't as fortunate as others around them to begin with. also 23:29 was just a really weird and unnecessary comment, like sometimes it's okay to just stay quiet and let a scene play out without making some try-hard edgy comment at someone else's expense.
