I just realized that what I love about South Korean films/shows is that they tend to focus more on the characters and give importance to them as they do with the concept/story. It makes me emotionally enganged and invested to every characters, just like on Parasite, Train to Bussan, and this one

Its basically anime. The entire time I was watching this show all I could see are the anime tropes. Especially the MC getting a timeskip and design change going into the next season.

@@RSGReallySimpleGaming that's exactly what I was thinking the entire time. Every episode I was like "Is this based on some manga???" Cuz it felt like watching an anime. Only Koreans can bring anime into real life. Even Japanese can't do it with their anime live action shows.

I feel like one thing in particular sets this series apart from other "battle royale" types of shows: the fact that they were not exactly "forced" to be there. I feel like most of these types of shows and movies make it so the participants are kidnapped or forced to participate, and that makes me feel like the characters are desperate to win, but just because they want to go back to their previous lives in a "I just want to survive" kind of way. But in this one people literally voted to leave and then came back from their own volition, and that shows how desperate these people are that they would submit to the games. Like, the weight of your previous life is so unbearable that you prefer to risk your life than going back empty handed. I think this adds much more depth to the players and their motivations.

Yea but it’s important to remember most of these people are in this position for making immoral and bad decisions. They aren’t victims of their life. The marble game episode you mentioned was just straight up emotionally brutal. The only thing I had a problem with were the VIPs, and the shocking bad acting. I saw an article explaining why this was, since it's so hard to get non Korean actors they end up with really bad ones. Also the way they speak English is done so it's easier for Korean audiences to understand. Still, really took me out of the series when the VIPs were talking (thankfully it's only an episode or two).

I didn't find it sad at all in my opinion maybe because I'm not used to subtitles but the show kinda just felt goofy and filled with gratuitous violence that I got a bit desensitised to and couldn't understand the characters more because of how it was laid out and not going in to deep on the backstory. I wish they made 12 episodes 1 hour each with 10 million of budget per episode cause then it would be a really quality show and could potentially be a masterpiece if laid out right.

saw the first two episodes at a friend's place and I re-newed my netflix subscription to see the rest when i got home. It's really good! Every single actor did an amazing job and the story, sub-plots etc all were great. Some decisions didn't make sense and the ending wasn't that satisfying (clearly leaving room for a second season) but other than that flawless. Everyone should watch it.

Very cool show. Fun death game concept, cool twists on genre tropes, characters are pretty memorable and all have decent arcs and well-defined motivations, it's bright, colourful, violent, has an *anime come to life* energy to it, and lots of subtext on debt, greed, classism, the value of life, and the cost of your morals.
