I just realized that what I love about South Korean films/shows is that they tend to focus more on the characters and give importance to them as they do with the concept/story. It makes me emotionally enganged and invested to every characters, just like on Parasite, Train to Bussan, and this one

@@RSGReallySimpleGaming that's exactly what I was thinking the entire time. Every episode I was like "Is this based on some manga???" Cuz it felt like watching an anime. Only Koreans can bring anime into real life. Even Japanese can't do it with their anime live action shows.

I feel like one thing in particular sets this series apart from other "battle royale" types of shows: the fact that they were not exactly "forced" to be there. I feel like most of these types of shows and movies make it so the participants are kidnapped or forced to participate, and that makes me feel like the characters are desperate to win, but just because they want to go back to their previous lives in a "I just want to survive" kind of way. But in this one people literally voted to leave and then came back from their own volition, and that shows how desperate these people are that they would submit to the games. Like, the weight of your previous life is so unbearable that you prefer to risk your life than going back empty handed. I think this adds much more depth to the players and their motivations.

Yea but it’s important to remember most of these people are in this position for making immoral and bad decisions. They aren’t victims of their life. the VIPs part was the download side of the whole series due to pretty bad acting. I guess the production team of the series knew that too but probably didn't have many other choices in picking the right actors to play the roles. luckily the VIPs part was not a crucial part in the whole series. so viewers can or should live with it while watching.

I knew from the first few episodes that this old man isn't what he seems But the reveal tho, motherfucker did it hit me Nevertheless I don't really see him as the villain in the sense of the word, I mean sure everyone's like 'rich people bad' but the man cared more about equality, democracy & playing fair than practically every political institution on the planet that considers themselves a 'democracy' so there's that.

I really liked this. I knocked it out in like two days. I got upset when some characters got eliminated, I grew to hate one in particular but also understood that they had the most clear understanding of the game as a whole I think. The ending twist I didn't see coming but at the same time I wasn't completely surprised by. It was sorta one of those things where ya feel like something is off but couldn't quite figure out what exactly. All in all it was great I had a good time with it.

I know who you mean when you say you grew to hate one character in particular. I think the fact that he has human qualities and clear motivations is great writing because it makes him more hateable. I didn't find it sad at all in my opinion maybe because I'm not used to subtitles but the show kinda just felt goofy and filled with gratuitous violence that I got a bit desensitised to and couldn't understand the characters more because of how it was laid out and not going in to deep on the backstory. I wish they made 12 episodes 1 hour each with 10 million of budget per episode cause then it would be a really quality show and could potentially be a masterpiece if laid out right.

@@jonathancoburn6885 you bet your ASS it is! 😀 My mom doesn't get why I keep recommending it to people, but she went a long time between episodes, and it seems to be not her type of show. But that doesn't mean it's not a MASTERPIECE. 😀

Dark is one of the greatest shows of all time. I love Squid Game but it doesn’t hold a candle to Dark

Not sure if you read these. I've never been interested in watching foreign series, but after watching your review on Squid Game I watched it, I actually just finished it and it did not disappoint!! I don't know if you have any idea of the impact you have on others!! Thank you lots Jeremy! You've opened my mind to new genres. 🙏

Welcome to the club. Just don't watch any Jeremy from 2009. Think of it like a dream.

Good series, but I think shaving a couple of minutes here and there in few episodes would go a long way because some episodes felt a tad too long or too slowly paced. And of course congrats to Mr. Jahns for not smoking :)

Love that your plugging South Korean cinema! I got into SK films around the time that Old Boy came out and wow, the story telling/characters and visuals in their films are next level. I.E- I Saw The Devil, Bittersweet Life and so many more.

SPOILER ALERT That marble game was the most emotional episode of the entire show which also had the biggest and most terrible twist. The lovable characters pitted against each other.

As soon as they split into 2s it seemed obvious what was going to happen. Good narrative though

Ay my guy you should probably edit your comment to have a spoiler warning, not everyone here watched it yet. It's an easy mistake to make, but also an easy one to fix.

This series was so good. Twist the last episode. No need for a 2nd season. It was PERFECT!

Yooo! It never clicked in my head how the entire facility is a schoolyard! The cafeteria waiting room, lining up for lunch, people cutting in line, contestants dividing into cliques (the nerds vs the jocks/bullies), even stereotypes like the jock and the "cheerleader" (I remember her character hiding her age and only accepting 19 as an answer) having sex in the bathroom!
