It's maybe the tallest achievement in the history of Irish rugby. For the first time since 1994, somebody has defeated New Zealand in a home test series, and boy did Ireland do it in style- Time to break down just how they opened them up, and look into what is wrong with the All Blacks...

It's a bizarre feeling being Irish these days. Despite the successes we had with Schmidt, I always felt like they were moments away from disaster. The incredibly specific gameplans he had seemed difficult to execute and all it takes is one or two players not sticking to the plan and it could all crumble down. On the other hand, this team under Farrell look really comfortable. Even if we go 10 points down I have faith that the team have a legitimate chance to retake the lead. Maybe there's a growing impact of a positive mindset from the past 8/9 years too.

@@DT7w8 We know that but you have to remember where we came from. We were usually quite a poor team and would never think we can beat NZ. Now in the last maybe 15 years we are regularly beating NZ, France, England, Australia and South Africa. Our world cups went from just being lucky to be in a QF to finally topping a group and beating France and Australia in a WC... may not seem big to many of you out there in NZ or whatever but to us we have been growing and getting better. We can't just expect to get to a final of a world cup. We have respect for where we are - and maybe one day we can, but I'm still very proud of my team.

Excellent analysis of the series as always; the way you pick apart Ireland’s phenomenal attack plan makes so much sense, and your ability to isolate those small moments (like Beirne breaking those mauls) really takes it to the next level. One thing that I appreciated here was your segment on Beauden Barrett; I think the guy gets way too much heat for not being a “good kicker” and not being creative enough with his distribution. I thought he did the best he could with his options and was one of the best defensively for the ABs as well, honestly I didn’t see much improvement when Mo’unga came on, and Barrett’s running game and defence outweighs Mo’unga’s stepping (useless against an organised defence), distribution (useless without a proper attack), or kicking (Jordie Barrett can kick goals just as well, and as shown here Beauden’s kicking from hand isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be).

Pure determination, coordination, strength, speed, talent and training that's how - no brutality just abiding by rules and keeping the pack tight when on the move during attacks. The All Blacks plated a scrappy game but were blocked by Ireland from scoring and achieving the leading score. Ireland have beaten them so many times now you'd think NZ would be used to the idea. Ireland deserved to win and they did they played a beautiful game that was a treat to watch.

If you'll pardon a cricket analogy, the All Blacks in the last 20 years were like the Australian cricket team of the early noughties... when you lost Dan Carter, Richie McCaw, Nonu / Smith combo and perhaps Kieron Read, you went the same way as when they lost Warne, Mcgrath, Gilchrist, Hayden and the Waugh brothers. You still have fantastic players but they don't have the same complete dominance than the ones above did.
@angusgrant6903
@angusgrant6903 Жыл бұрын
@@Karma-qt4ji Totally agree, but with the extension to the analogy: Cricket Australia hire the assistant coach from the naughties team, then that coach's assist, and never develop their game so they're out there in 2022 trying to defend totals of 230 in ODIs. I believe it's not just that the players are different, it's that the style hasn't adapted to suit them. Throw in the fact that rugby in NZ is going the way of Football in the US, where it's only played by a small minority of obsessive players whose power and speed perpetuate a cycle of decreased player uptake due to fear of injury, and this is what you get. Rather bleak future I think... (can you tell I'm just a wee bit invested haha)

@@elscruffomcscruffy8371 ….Yeah, settle down there tigger, entitlement is purely a projection you’re placing on the AB’s and NZers in general. The top tier 1 teams induce an exhilarating sense of potential foreboding because in NZ, you’re literally marinaded in the idea that no one can predict what 15 men can achieve against 15 on the day. The AB’s success comes from a deserved sense of urgency and fear of defeat, as opposed to some imagined entitlement and arrogance. The experience the Namibian team had during the 2015 RWC sums the the AB’s up best. They were invited to the AB’s changing rooms for a couple of post match beers and were surprised to discover they were very humble and soft spoken, genuinely interested in the Namibians as fellow players and not at all what you’re trying to portray. Whatever reasons these assertions are made is for yourself to work out but, they don’t match up with genuine Kiwis although we do have an ugly supporters element living in NZ, whose loyalties lie elsewhere, yet like to think they can talk smack on public formats as if they are Kiwis at heart. This group and their divided loyalties are part of the malaise affecting the current AB’s incidentally.

@Hamish Banish totally agree with you, like in the last world cup, All Blacks vs Springboks, there were 11 scrums, almost all were penalties against the ABs, but none were given except for the last 1 or 2. That's about 9 penalties/free kicks, some will have been a 3 points and some will have given territory. People should try to be subjective when talking about the All Blacks dominance. There were many games they should have lost but won due to the refs; and although the ABs would probably have still been the number 1 team in rugby for that time, they would not have had that kind of dominance and aura of being near impossible to beat.
