Subscribe! My best squirrel friend who would always wait for me in the morning and run excitedly on the stone pathway to get a peanut and then run all the way back to the bench each time. Squirrels are such unique individual characters and sometimes certain squirrels form bonds like this with humans. A new video of me having a blast teaching two new squirrels to use the path and avoid the grass is online at: • Man Teaches Squirrels ... a sort of behind the scenes look at how it is done!

OMG...you taught him to do that lol. I was just going to comment on how polite he was to only walk on the path...I don't know what's more amazing, him using the path on his own or you teaching him (and the others). You are so lucky to have this experience with these adorable squirrels. Although, I am sure it is less about luck and more about the time and patience you put into forming these bonds/relationships....but you're still lucky. There are too many feral cats hanging at my house at all hours of the day and night (I am their primary food source)...even though they are very well fed, some will still go after them for the thrill of it (play = practice). It really seems like you are enriching their lives and they, yours.

My parents were divorced for over 20 years and got back together, and Dad moved back into Mom's house. Within a couple months he had every squirrel in the neighborhood out for snacks every afternoon. Dad came down with colon cancer not too long afterward, and I would be there helping out as much as I could, and those squirrels would line the window sills looking in the house for him and his snacks. As time went on and Dad passed away, the little critters took it out on Mom's flower gardens ripping them up and snacking on the roots. We sold the old house recently, and as I was walking down the driveway the last time to the gates at the street, I looked up, and the trees were alive with squirrels, chattering, and telling us goodbye.

My grandmother had a squirrel that she would feed every day. When she died I stayed in her house for a week packing things and when the squirrel came I tried to feed it like Granny did but he never ate what I put out. He paced around the yard for days, I assume waiting for her, but never ate a thing. They feel more than we know. Thanks for Sharing, I enjoy your videos.

I can't wait to meet my future squirrel friend! I have tons of squirrels living in the pecan trees next to my house. I'm going to attempt to make some squirrel friends very soon. I've got to figure out how to safely gain their trust without drawing attention to myself. We have many cats who are infatuated with the squirrels, birds, and lizards.

This is amazing. Your squirrel is so well mannered and respectful. Here we have some real squirrel riff raff....these guys will brawl, take two peanuts, dig holes and bury them and come back and brawl some more while demanding nuts. If you have never seen squirrels take two peanuts at a time, you haven't been to Ontario, Canada. The black squirrels here are nutcases. They have been known to knock on our backdoor. They aren't afraid of cats. In fact the cats are afraid of them. My wife thinks the squirrels eat magic mushrooms and get high. But to be fair, the little guys are entertaining.

*RON JANISCH:* My squirrels attack each other and actually growl, to be the first one to get to the food I put out. There's one guy that's extremely aggressive and if I give him whatever it is I throw out, he picks that up, and if I throw another piece out for another squirrel, he growls and fights the other one off so he can have both pieces! He's also the one that comes right up on the top step and takes the treat right out of my hand! He's cute, but he's also a greedy little hog!! ; p

Rachel Cooper you could take a later, go up the tree until you find a good spot to stack, & rest the cobs on, better yet leave a husk leaf on there, tie it in a loop big enough to fit around 1 of there little shoulders so 1 can carry it up easy, and if they have to they can chew through the little loop.

One of the somewhat sad things about having squirrel friends is they usually aren't around a long time. Through the years I've had quite a few Squirrel pals. I had one little gal who would come inside if I left the door open and beg for a pecan. I had another who would sit right beside me on the patio table with absolutely no fear of me at all. She would actually turn her back to me while she scanned for Hawks and Cats. These were totally wild squirrels mind you that I eventually made friends with. It takes time, treats, and a lot of sweet talking but you can gain their trust. They are actually quite intelligent and have their own little unique Squirrel personalities. When they start getting a little old they loose that sharp alert edge and quick reflex to a threat. Being wild animals they are subject to disease and constant predation. It's just natures way. One odd thing I noticed is the Squirrels will chew on various things around my neighbors houses but absolutely nothing of mine. I suppose I have unknowingly stuck a deal with the Squirrels to leave my stuff alone if I give them their food bribes. I have a picture of me when I was a toddler handing a Squirrel a pecan. I think it's so cool that the Squirrels run towards me instead of away when I come home.

Every few years I go camping in northern Ontario, and one of the pleasures of being there is being awakened every morning by furious red squirrels. They're highly territorial and absolutely fearless, and every morning at sunrise, like clockwork, the local red squirrels will come to shriek squirrelly obscenities at me for squatting on their turf. They'll run back and forth in an absolute rage, squeaking and chittering, making false charges and expressing their uttermost outrage. It's adorable.
@diggadirt393
@diggadirt393 5 жыл бұрын
When you say "making false charges" do you mean they are acting like they are going to attack, or did they report you to the police and are trying to tarnish your reputation with preposterous allegations?
@NoJusticeNoPeace
@NoJusticeNoPeace 5 жыл бұрын
A false charge is something a lot of animals do, from mice to elephants. Actual attacks carry risk, so most animals will pretend to attack by charging at you, hoping to scare you. If you stand your ground and refuse to move, they'll stop, back up, and then charge again, each time stopping before they actually get to you. Squirrels think it makes them look fierce, which is funny and charming.

I have both squirrels and chipmunks that I feed, that come when I call them, and will come if they just hear my voice as well. The chipmunks will follow me in the house sometimes, they have no fear and will crawl right up my leg and into my lap. The squirrels get impatient and will knock on the slider door and if I take too long to come outside they start climbing on the screen door. I open the door, hand them a nut and they leave LOL. Like furry trick or treaters. I also have a few flocks of birds that live in my yard, a family of Blue Jays, Robins and Mourning Doves. They all know the sound of my voice and will fly down from the trees, it has been so cool to see their babies join them over this past summer. My neighbors think I am a crazy nature witch or something LOL. I am writing a book and they are inspirations for my characters.

Such amazing animals. Speaking as a biologist there are a few background factors for such behavior. Squirrels or others benefit from human presence also by escaping predators who are more shy. And a ballsy squirrel like this avoids competition as well probably from his own kind. I love how they trick each other and steal stuff, or how they pretend to cache food to trick the neighbors :) The reason they sit on a high spot is also related to that. You can eat a nut and at the same time better watch out for other animals around you. The tiles are probably just easier to move quickly. I can make more distance on tiles than on grass as well... You should try to just leave a bunch of peanuts out. Then you can observe caching behavior and how carefully it's done.

Interesting comments, I have noticed like in this case one squirrel of a generation will stand out as a leader or more adventurous and open to a closer relationship with a human. If they are tricked or get hurt by the relationship then it is a setback but after several successful generations where closer involvement with humans pays off they all start to draw closer. BB
