9S's VA deserves a fucking medal

Now I'm starting to see why they have those blindfolds on. I'm guessing it's a symbol of their blindness to the truth about everything. YorHa, the humans, their goals, missions... Also it's kind of a nod to Nier's mask.

I spoke to Kyle McCarley (9S’s voice actor) not that long ago and he literally made his throat bleed after voicing this character.

Man, that 9S's screaming voice after 2B death is so epic. The true fact is 9S's voice actor didn't even know that 2B would call him Nines. He even cried aloud at the recording room. These screaming voices are emotionally juiced out and these facts made this as the best game ever.

Just to recap, 9S has: 1. Lost 21O, after being forced to fight her 2. Lost 2B, right infront of his face 3. Been forced to fight clones of his android waifu in a sick parody of her returning from the dead 4. Learned that YoRHA was meant to die form the beginning. 5. Learned his hot android waifu was just there to keep him from getting too smart and forced to murder him when that happens. 6. Learned that humans, the people they were meant to protect with their lives, are all dead. All the sacrifices they've been forced to make have been all to continue a farce. 7. Come crashing down to the unavoidable conclusion that his life is completely meaningless and has gone completely insane from realizing so. The "S" part of his name wasn't Scanner. Its clearly for "Suffering". The worst part of this is he was just a genuinely optimistic kid who wanted to make the world a better place, and the world gave him the biggest of middle fingers for his trouble.

All it takes is one bad day...

i'll never understand how people hate 9S. he's the closest thing to human in the entire game.

I think one of the greatest things about 9S' arc is that, you play through with him and experience his pain. Normally in other games, most people who go insane are the villain, but not here. You have a choice to play as the force who went through all this shit in the final battle.

He might have been able to get over B2's death if it weren't for the rapid fire bullshit the game puts him through with all the revelations that everything ever told to him is a lie as well as 2B which wasn't even her real name and his operators death.

Damn, this dude just lost it. Not going to lie, this was the best and worst part of the game.

Hearing 9S's crying in 3:27 gradually and slowly turning to laughter was so sad and scary for me to witness, the guy was light hearted but slowly and eventually lost all his innocence to the darkness and became this psycho. Whoever was 9S English voice actor he really did an amazing job.

I've seen quite a few people claim 9S started hating her after he started going crazy and after he learned the truth. I disagree. Rather than hate her, I think he is just very upset and holds a lot of resentment towards her. I think he feels more confused than anything. He hates the lies, not 2B herself. He loves her. Losing 2B and then on top of that being told the truth by A2, he couldn't mentally handle it and in his unstable state he could only think of her and you can tell from that one part he wanted to keep all those memories he had with her because he loves her so much, but it is too painful for him. I hope there is a sequel or something and we can see them together again. I know the ending(s) are sort of optimistic. (Spoilers) One ending 9s takes on the body of a machine. Another ending A2 sacrifices herself and cures him and the pods rebuild them and restore them with the hope that they'll change the future and not keep repeating the same mistakes.

NieR Automata handled 2B's death and 9S' fall into insanity so well it made me, the player, feel emotions. 2B was a badass that I played with, journeyed with, massacred machines with, I went on multiple epic quests with her, etc. Then to just have her taken from me like that... I legitimately felt empty and sad about her death. Then the game kept shoving the memory of 2B in my face; Having me fight to keep her memories, have everyone remind me of her death, hearing her final words and last message, even forcing me to KILL her over and over; Constantly forcing me to remember that she is DEAD and I can't ever play with her again. It's so tragic; I can sympathize with 9S. On top of that the ultimate truth was one of the biggest mind-blowing plot twists I've ever witnessed. I still think about how even when Humanity is gone, history still tries to repeat itself even though there is no purpose as life is meaningless. No other form of entertainment has ever made me feel such vast emotions other than video games like these.

It's too sad. He is love 2B so much but he can't even understand his feeling or even tell her how he feel to her. T^T

The transition from crying in despair to laughing like a maniac is perfect, its so natural it is chilling to the bone, Kyle McCarley is a genius of his craft.

Turning into the Joker is bad for you kids

On the first two playthroughs i laughed at Eve's corny lines about losing his brother. But as I saw 9S's fall from Grace in the third playthrough it really made me reconsider how I felt about Adam and Eve

It is kind of symbolic that 9S falls into the canyon where machines commit suicide. It kind of says that this is where the 9S we knew died and the insane cinnamon role we know was born. as 9S falls, so does his sanity, and his reality around him.

I wish 9S knew how many people love him and would do anything to see him smile.

The saddest part of this whole video is that if you weren't connected to the network, you wouldn't see the corpses of androids on the floor before 9S's rampage in the Soul Box. *Those androids were the players that sacrificed their save data. :(*

So first battle is some part of his erased/hidden memory in which 2B was ordered to kill 9S but in the end she failed and got killed? Then 9S crouched over her dead body and started yelling "They're mine! My memories, you hear me!?" and after all 2B's task was to delete his memories over and over. Maybe at this point he discovered the truth about 2B. It is possible as 9S once almost managed to defeat 2B what we know from concert script.

That voice acting was so damn good. I could feel that emotion in my heart.

No matter how many great performances he's given and will give in the future, I think 9S will always be my All time favourite role from Kyle McCarley.

Poor boy. He's not really a goody two-shoes protagonist, but whatever, I've felt sorry for him, I've felt he didn't deserve any of... this. That's why I like Yoko Taro's stories: he always makes me feel something about his characters. Also, kudos for 9S's voice actors (both in japanese and in english) and its motion-capture actor.

I was thinking earlier about how 9S looks really similar to Gojo from the series Jujutsu Kaisen, but in all honesty, at least in terms of pain, he’s definitely on Yuji’s level, if not more.

When I play 9s after 2Bs death, it really feels like having a heartbreak. The ambiance of the game is so different just like what we feel in the real world. Everything is quiet but you have this emotion inside you that is eating you alive. After waking up beside the twins, the game doesn't give you a mission. You just have no purpose. So you wonder around, trying to kill every machine life forms you came across until it triggers the story mission.

Sadly, a happy ending was never 2B.

His JP actor sounds too "generic anime" for my tastes. There's something so deeply emotional about his speech in the English. His physco laughter and crying really hits me hard. Like I'm sorry but his JP scream is so gargley and weird. He also sounds a bit too young when he's talking just normal which makes me feel weird- If I'm gonna have a character look as feminine as 9S I'd like him to at least feel like an adult.

The second half of Nier: Automata was soul-crushing: seeing 2B’s death and 9S’ abysmal descending to insanity, which in the end resulted in a fight against someone who suffered the same pain (A2), was so damn fucking sad and heartbreaking. The game is deeper than expected, and I couldn’t believe Yoko Taro and his team could discuss about deep philosophical theme like existentialism, while also making a wonderful story. Nier: Automata has become my favorite game, aside from Red Dead Redemption.

whenever the game plays The Sound of the End - Quiet, then you know some shit is about to either go down, or has gone down. Amazing theme. I wish I had a list of all the times that that song plays so I could see all of them.
