Now that both devices have been setup, it's time to ask ourselves some questions. Do they compete for space or are they completing each other. Would SSL UC1 alone be more than enough and is adding the UF8 really necessary? Let's find out

I think the UC1 and the UF1 is all you need unless you feel the need for multiple faders then you can get the UF8

Great video! Thanks for sharing. Quick question: when you select a track in the DAW, the UF8 automatically recognizes where you are in the session? I usually work with a big template of 800+ tracks, and scrolling with the UF8 to find the track wouldn’t work. Thanks!

Yes it does. DAW (in my case Logic) follows UF8, and UF8 follows Logic - whatever gets selected anywhere the other jumps to it. Also note, that you'll be much faster scrolling on the UF8 than with a mouse or trackball in your DAW to get to track number 745 (dang) since you can jump in groups of 8 and flip through those tracks quickly - but yeah, either way works.

@@massivebeatzz Seems obvious but it isn’t! The ‘complicated’ plugin would be the channel strip and most plugs after that don’t need to be complex. Brilliant, thanks again massive. I think you just sold SSL another UF8. :)

Thanks a lot! Yes the UC1 comes with Strip and Buss 2. And UF8 comes with Drum and Vocal Channel. If you are in LA, then I have a great place for you (Westlake Pro). And I bought my first UF8 on guitar center online. I did that because I had 45 days return policy, and you can just go to a store and return it. They shipped within 2 days. I don't need a sales engineer, lol, but with Sweetwater, you cannot return for free.

Thanks much - Great to hear! Yep, the integration is air tight, I had Console1 and found myself touching teh mouse / keyboard too often.

Hey bro. I think the biggest thing I want to do to help my mixes is get the fader 8. I think that’s more value since sometimes I need to automate two or more channels . I think I can get away with DQ settings because I have my sweet spots saved up along with compression sweet spots too. What do you think I should get ?

Hey - i'd be happy to chime in. When you say automate two or more channels with Faderport 8- do you assume the UF8 can't do it? I hope I got that right. For that, at any rate both can do well. If you have Studio one, I think you;d be ok with FP8 - the integration is a bit better than for other DAWS. The UF will still be better based on more functions, and a better software - but do we need that to automate? No not at all. I'd save the money .

With all the autocorrect going on I wanted to ask do I really need a UC1 if my workflow on the SSL channel is to save my favorite dynamics ratios along with EQ settings? I think I just need the Uf8 if I want to automate right ? I am already subscribed to the yearly plugins with SSL BTW.

gotcha - no need at all - you'd be fine withe the UF8, it can do it all.

Essentially the same thing as the Console 1, the form factor is better on the UC1, especially if you already have the UF8 but the Console 1 app has the graphical curve display that the UC1 lacks . . . .

yeah, I wasn't a fan of the wonky Softube plugin because it didn't look vintage, nor modern- and -oddly didn't look like the controller either - it's mapped, but not the same thing. And the software gets in the way a bit, and sometimes doesn't switch correctly back and forth. The graphic thing was cool though . I returned the Softube Console 1 really fast after 4 weeks - was more of a hassle for me, compared to mouse / trackpad, but I'd be willing to try it again. Definitely a good product overall.

I had issues with my console 1. I sent it to back softube for evaluation. It was out of warranty so they said they would sell me another unit at a discount. Which came out to be little over half price. That didn’t sit to well with me. I just feel that they should’ve sent me other unit. I’m sure they had another used unit laying around. Hell I would’ve taken that. But anyway the Uc1 looks like a better option.

Greetings! I would like to ask (if I may,) UC1/UF8, do you know if they have any surround sound control/capability? Also, what about if you were to use Nuendo as your DAW? Any thoughts you could provide?

sure - it would seems so. The rotary encoders reads teh channel options from each track, in regards to panning etc. So you should be able to control that. As far as Nuendo, I do not see it listed in the DAWs in SSL360 control software - so I would rather say, not at this point.

Yes, but I have seen some set up’s for using this with Cubase, so I’m incline to believe Nuendo would work as well, as they share the same core architecture. But thank you for your prompt response!😊

I’m debating on getting the SSL Nucleus or UC1… I’m definitely getting the UC8. What’s your thoughts??

The Nucleus (1 and 2 ) look great - but they need to be set up with Ethernet. So a bit of a hassle to set up,. It's more like UF8 vs Nucleus , UF8 wins. The UC1 is something else altogether.

@@massivebeatzz I have the Nucleus 2 and the UC1. Work great together as long as you have the channel strip plug-in open. Whenever you select a channel on the Nucleus, the UC1 and the 360 software follow. Was thinking about swapping for two UF8’s but I can’t. Nucleus is my Hub. Daw Control, monitor section, talkback, mic pre’s are at the end of my summing chain, dedicated transport and shuttle. But if I didn’t already have it, I’d get the 2 UF8’s to sandwich my UC1 between.

The Nucleus 2 has been discontinued. I would not buy a product brand new that was discontinued

Can you use motorised faders to record automation for VST instrument parameters?

Yes. You would access them through plugin control which defaults to rotary knobs. But then you can press "Flip", and the Faders will control virtual instruments. plugins etc (whether AU, VST or AAX etc)

Bro, how do u setup the plugins as 1, 2, 3 on the uf8 so when u press the button the plugin is inserted in that slot?

you;d insert it in the Daw. Then on UF 8, you use the right hand arrow keys to navigate from 1 to 8. You;d have to have PLUGIN on the left pressed first. If nothing pops up, just press down on the rotary encoder wheel, and the plugin will pop up for that channel.

I Definitively share the same opinion... I have the UC-1 and I love it.... I use the Platform M+ for motorized faders and with cubase 12 I can make it do anything I want (Focused Quick Controlls and Midi Remote Editor). . . . UC-1 and "muscle memory" is the best. . . that really speads up the workflow. and SSL plugins, second to none.... so this "limits" you in amounts but that's in the best way possible... resulting in you getting faster and better. I still use other plugins, but for special things, definitively a smaller percentage of the project... the rest is just UC-1

well said - the fancy plugins have their place with a specific problem. As Andrew Scheps said - don't go looking for problems - address them when they are there. (like - don't need a Soothe 2 on every channel. :)

So that they can change things later on? Also the E switch goes from SSL9000K to 4000E, perhaps the numbers are different? But I agree - it'd be nice to see them.

There are numbers present on screen when using the 360 consul software with the UC1 (or without the UC1).

It's a hardware controller for 829, with 2 plugins included for free, they alone cost 500 if you buy them alone. They are the best SSL emulations in my book at the moment.

I was thinking that too, they got to have plans to monetize this even more lol. This is a XL9000K, with an optional 4000E EQ switch - super happy with that sound. If they ad a 4000G for little cost - I'm in.

@@massivebeatzz Would prefer the E myself but why not both? :) The ‘E’ on the present unit probably just emulates the EQ curves, but not the distortion characteristics. If they do something like that I’m all over the thing. I like the Waves CLA strip for that reason. I now have Bx 9000 and CLA on every channel and very happy, but the mouseless, screenless UC1 kills me. They outdid themselves. I just can’t believe they didn’t do it sooner.

@@massivebeatzz Do you find that the present ‘E’ on the UC1 sounds like an actual E? We’re rewiring the studio now. As soon as we’re back up I’ll be trying the plug-ins but what’s your take? Sorry to bother you with this and thanks again for this video. I think it’s the best UC1/UF8 one out there.
