Hey Steve! Great video! I agree that SSL was and is on a serious pace lately! Tons of really great plugins and hardware. I've always been a big fan but I'm becoming an even bigger fan now. I just wish they'd put one channel strip from the UF8 on the UC1. That would be ideal for me.
@TheSteveKinney

Right on dude! I really feel like they will really expand on the UC1 & UF8 - it had amazing reception. And there is stronggggg demand to make plugins controllable with hardware. So no way we don’t see this space grow, not only from SSL but other companies too. I’m pretty suspicious but I’m pretty sure they will be making a “master” unit. So a one fader dealio with transport. Which would go well with your UC1.

You will honestly love it. I’ve had many controllers over years. The icon had been my favorite out of them all until I got this overkill type thing ha ha I still feel the same about it though as I did in my other videos. It’s not THE controller. But I got it as a part of a special project. Very grateful to have it. I was totally about to throw down on a big icon platform nano and m+ extender setup. 17 faders would have been cool LOL

For real dude! These companies are kind of lagging. With respect to SSL - I mean the name ... ssl 360 - that’s full circle. And right now - we’re almost at a full circle... just missing the rest of the editing and recording bits. Idk / we will see. I would LOVE to see neve compete with the UF8 and the big six. Along with api. Especially if it was in traditional modular api style. Cheers Chris!

I see very little reason for SSL or Neve to step into the swamp of DAW creation. There are so many great choices and the DAW itself has almost nothing to do with their actual strengths, audio signal processing, which are available in every DAW already. If they want to participate I’d be thrilled about iPad apps to control their creations in a way only they could envision.
@TheSteveKinney

@@artysanmobile On the iPad: Laggy. No real tactile feel. I’d have to respectfully disagree with ya mate! With respect to the DAW thing - I have a feeling everything’s going proprietary sooner than later - and then subscription stuff bandwagon. Etc. I’m not saying it’s smart, good, or even that I like - just that it’s likely. I would really prefer the UC1 to be open - so I could use it with UAD Etc. That would be sweet. But obviously isn’t happen. And look at neve making an interface - just signals that they are aware of the market. That’s all. Just probabilities. That’s all, cheers brotha!

Quick video tip. Export your video in the aspect ratio you want instead of adding black bars. On a normal 16:9 ratio display it might look fine, but when you are viewing it on a wider screen ratio such as 21:9 (which is very common these days) it will give you an entire black frame around it and it will not utilize the full width of the display. If you're exporting at 1920x1080 with black bars at a cinema ratio, you could better export it normally (without black bars) but at 1920x803.

@@TheSteveKinney absolutely, hardware rack controllers, would be sublime. there's something more musical when your listening and not having to watch what your doing in a mix, I can control a few dials without having to look . Hi Steve... So, I purchased a UF8. It's cool...but, I can only access 8 tracks in Luna (with the faders) - that is to say, there is no way to 'bank' over to the next set of tracks. The only way to access them with the controller is to hide the first set of tracks in the Luna software, then, the subsequent tracks pop into my faders. The track banking feature works great in Logic. Also, I am disappointed that I cannot access plugins and modify the settings in Luna - again, works fine in Logic. Is this a 'Luna' thing or am I missing something in the setup? Thanks for your great videos!
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney 2 жыл бұрын
100% Positive that There is some sort of setting that you have incorrectly applied. UF8 should be in Logic Pro mode on your layer in ssl 360. It should be on output port 1/ input 1 in that order in Luna. And as far as the Luna settings. It should be in order: 1. (Assuming this is the only controller “On” Input device - “SSL V-MIDI Port 1 source” Output device - “ssl v-midi port 1 destination” Important - focus module and extender need to be turned off. As far as other settings - I prefer: Surface shows tracks from - main window Bank to selected track - on Scroll Luna when banking - off Show main track - on Use surface fader taper - on Those shouldn’t impact the device banking - but the first one will for sure.

I personally think there isn’t a better controller than the UF8. The custom keys really allow for fast shortcuts. And custom tailored workflow. That said - the MCU support in logic is great / so you’d be pretty happy with any of them at the end of the day. Quality wise - again. Nothing better than the uf8. The fader port is a super close second. It’s especially nice that it has 16 faders.

Great video. Do you think Luna stands up to logic from a producer’s point of view (as opposed to just mixing)? Also having used both do you prefer logic’s swipe comping or Luna’s way of editing vocals? Finally would you say that Luna sounds better than logic or is digital digital and therefore is it all dependent on the third party plugins you use?
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney 2 жыл бұрын
Fantastic questions Danny! 1. As a producer, I prefer Luna 1 million times over. It is easier (for me) on the eyes, and many commands make a lot more sense to me... it keeps me feeling creative and that's what I feel being a producer is about... being inspired and creative.... the sounds are fantastic too. They modeled a lot of amazing old keyboards, and synths etc and give it away for free as a part of "shape" 2. Luna's comp'ing is preferred for me, with an asterisk.. It has forced me to be a better performer, knowing that it's more of a process.. makes me practice more ahead of time.... then while comp'ing the process forces me to listen more with my ears instead of looking along with my eyes.. 3. Generally speaking - digital is digital... HOWEVER... Luna's "summing" extensions aren't available inside of any other daw, and to be honest - it's legit. It makes the mixes really feel and sound analogue... so, if you don't have those, then it's really a tie because digital is digital... If you tried to do this in other daw's, you'd have to have a bunch of instances of UAD DSP plugins across channels. but being it is native in Luna - you can save some DSP with the tape plugins running natively, etc... once you factor that in - LUNAAAAA. Woot. but to you last point, yeah - it kind of depends on the DSP. My main point really - is that it doesn't matter what daw you use, it's about how the workflow works for ya - and if the end result sounds good! Cheers!

I know the "focus" wheel seems to work no problem controlling plugins inside of luna. If you could get a go fund me going... Actually I like your idea of the color scheme. I use a scheme too like KICK is black or dark brow, bass brown, hats blue etc. Would be cool if UF8 would follow that with the LEDS but I think the reason they don't is that their mode is defined by the color. About the power switch, that doesn't bother me because the thing goed in suspend mode anyway after some time (configurable) so the all screens and LEDS go black. I actually prefer that than a power button.

@@TheSteveKinney Yeah I love it. I ordered a UF1 last week and after a week playing with it I ordered the UF8 as well. It's quite sturdy and the custom commands are awesome. I also suggested a few things to this Tim guy, for example, on the UF1, if you are on the 1st custom soft key page but you want a command on the last page, you have to press the "next page" arrow 9 times. I proposed either a round robin where you would continuously scroll through the soft banks or more ideal for me, a SHIFT + left or right arrow which then would go to the first or last soft key page. That would imo be better as then you could do that from whatever page you're on. I also miss a dedicated RECORD button. Maybe SHIFT + transport REC would be a work around or more ideal, SHIFT + SOLO which would work for those without a UF1. Overal I like it and it is damn stable. The software hasn't crashed a single time, neither did the controller.

Agree with Levon and others' similar comments: What a disappointment in looking after existing customers. For instance, I would like to be able to use the faders flipped to write automation in Ableton. UF8 can do it BUT the problem is that SSL have programmed it in such as way that the plugin parameter names disappear when faders are flipped so it is ABSOLUTELY USELESS! It's such a basic requirement to know what a fader controls! I agree 100% with the need for track colours also - They are essential. It's impossible to navigate a project easily when there are no colours to differentiate tracks AND made worse because track names are truncated so short. (Note to SSL: EDM track names are not simple scribble strips like "GTR 1" - Know your users please). The truncation has to do with the Mackie legacy I understand but what I don't get is that Softube Console 1 pulls the full track names from Ableton. Hey SSL coders ... just copy the way Softube do it SSL - PLEASE! I'll happily add a track name copying plugin on each channel to pull the track name through in full if it makes the UF8 actually a usable tool. Worst of all is the ridiculous amount of time it is taking SSL to go M1 native. My companion UC1 is redundant next to the UF8 when using the latest version of Ableton. If things don't improve both the UC1 and UF8 are going up for sale because it's just a frustrating waste of money on good hardware with underwhelming implementation. I've spoken with SSL and made them aware of these issues in a constructive way saying "hey guys, we need this and it'll make the products really usable". They just ignore my emails now and won't comment on whether any of this is coming. It's so frustrating to support them to be better but then see SSL releasing new plugins over sorting out major usability issues for existing customers. What incentive is there when they already have our money?

Hey Steve, great video and your silent response to 'no power switch on it' was understandable. My only thinking on why they chose not to include a power switch goes back a hundred years (the '80's) and a recording studio in Burlington MA (long gone.) The owner discovered that the main reason any of their ample supply of analog devices would fail/break down was because of the power surges from turning on and off - SO - they left everything on - eliminating most repairs and achieved better dependability - and the heat generated by (especially the amps) they addressed with FANS just to keep things running a bit cooler. The studio was warm. The on/off switch itself failed on my old Phillips Turntable. I use a broken tooth pick to keep it jammed on, and power the motor up by the lit speed controllers and a metal connection when needed. lol now THAT is analog! P =]

My energy company would LOVE if I kept everything on all the time ha ha.. alas, I probably can't be doing that just quite yet, but I know that's pretty common place amongst active studio's. Funny enough - the one studio I frequent that requires that some things be powered down when leaving, also always has broken units.. ha.. this might be because of those surges, or just turds who don't know what they are doing in there.. but I find the correlation to be funny! cheers dude!

ESP as this is modular and the way for daw based users and in the box studios

I got to spend 4 magical days in Hansa studio working on some demos and sitting at that iconic famous ssl they have so when I bought the uf8 and uc1 it’s the closest I’ll get to being back at that seat by that desk that has made so many of my favorite bands albums .

Fun fact. Ssl was bought out by a much larger company that doesn’t share that history. While I don’t disagree with you, i agree. Ssl does have the amazing history, and everyone at the company, SSL, does seem to care and put out innovative shit.... Parent company likely only sees that as a balance sheet asset, and a name. And so - it’s just business at this point. There is a massive need for what ssl is doing, and no one, not neve, api, UA, etc is addressing.. At least yet. Console 1 started it, ssl is currently “finishing it” but id bet others will join. I still can’t believe that there isn’t some sort of hardware controller from UA. I’d pay $400 bucks for a full size 1176 - to sit in a rack and control digitally - every instance of UA 1176 plugs in my session. Would give me the analogue feel, and be able to use my hands and ears like I would in a big studio. Would be killer. Could even buy a few just to make the user experience more seamless with the session. Could totally see that... Why that’s not happening, is IMO - lack of innovation. It would require: Small power supply, Few potentiometers An lcd display Few simple buttons... 🤦🏻‍♂️ idk. I’ll keep dreaming LOL

@@TheSteveKinney I’d think with uad wanting dominance in the marketplace and having crushed it with interfaces they would take the next step and create a hybrid controller sort of thing .

@@TheSteveKinney I hear you on the buy out and the spreadsheet . So many great brands brought and then ruined by inferior products or their name slapped on any Bluetooth speaker or headphone or flip flops . Or the competition in the same company stealing the talent and ip then closing the company . In the end it will be a monopoly of 2 major players and behringer cloning everything haha
