You what? You realise that current pope isn't named after Saint Francis of Assisi but rather Saint Francis Xavier, the Jesuit missionary,@@Kitiwake? Our beloved Giovanni Bernadone prophesied a false pope right at the end of the Church. Some consider the current pontiff to be that very antipope.

This sequence in the movie is mesmerizing: when the doors open and Francis first looks down the nave of the basilica; when the face of Christ Pantokarater in the mosaic comes into view over the Pope's opening hand; the music; its all great.

Indeed, though it seems like many don't know that or just aren't aware that they are just being wannabes instead of just learning by example. By the way, doing either hasn't exactly worked out so far based on the fact the modern day still has the problems present from the past. Jesus, saints, and other religious figures just aren't effective at solving worldly problems. Only good for helping people live in fantasy worlds, delusions, and spitting platitudes while offering no conclusive results.

Marlon Brando was going to win the Best Leading Actor Oscar that year no matter who they put him up against. But Graham Faulkner should have been nominated at least. The moment he ceases to read the paper his friend designed to save his life and quotes what the Spirit has given him is so powerful. At this point Francesco no longer cares what might happen to him. All that matters is he speak the words of Jesus boldly and without hindrance-and Faulkner nails this. He plays Francis as a holy fool who may be eccentric in some ways but has a beautiful heart filled with a sincere love and respect for God and humanity.

Actually, there's a whole century between Francis' visit to the Pope and the moving of the Holy See to Avignon (1309). During the reign of Pope Innocent III the papacy was at the height of its powers, and he was considered to be the most powerful person in Europe at the time.

❤It wasn't, as certain 1970s movies would have it, because he was a nature-loving hippie (although I do love Donavan's soundtrack, especially the theme song). It was because the human beings he was preaching to wouldn't listen. He had wanted to preach the word of God in Rome, but when he arrived there, the people scorned him because he was dressed poorly, so they thought him an idiot. He tried for several days to gain their attention, but could not overcome their hardness of heart. "I grieve deeply over your misfortune," he told them, "because you are not only spurning me as a servant of Christ, but you are also really despising Him in me, since I have been preaching to you the Gospel of the Redeemer of the world. And so I am now leaving Rome. And I call as witness of your desolation Him who is the faithful Witness in heaven. And for your confusion I am going to preach the Gospel of Christ to the brute animals and the birds of the sky, so that by hearing the soul-saving words of God they may obey and have peace." At which, the people of Rome drove him from the city. Preaching to the birds was far from the most outrageous thing Francis did. Another time when he was in Rome to see the pope to get approval for his Rule, the pope looked at Francis in his "ill-fitting robe," with his "ugly face, long beard, disheveled hair, and overhanging black eyebrows," and couldn't believe that Francis, an unknown "nobody," could possibly be a servant of God--or even a human being. "Brother," Pope Innocent rebuked him, "go find some pigs--to which you should be compared rather than to men--and roll in the mud with them. And take the Rule you have made to them--and give them the benefit of your preaching!" So, of course, Francis did. He bowed his head, went out into the street, found some pigs, and rolled with them in the mud until he was completely covered with it. Then he went back inside, presented himself to the pope, and said, "Lord, I have done what you ordered. Now please listen to my petition. ❤❤❤❤

@MonoKulen - I don't know what church (or other building) in Rome the meeting between the Pope and Francis was historically supposed to have taken place in. However, St. Peter's Basilica in Rome was first built during the reign of the emperor Constantine in the 4th century. That first church was essentially torn down and re-built in the 16th century --- that's the building one sees today. l The set for this scene in the movie is the Cathedral of Monreale on Sicily.
