More was part of a campaign to exterminate heretics and he was involved and in some cases deeply involved in burning men to death. Historians debate how zealous he was or was he "doing his duty". Probably a combination. Not quite the saint the movie portrays him to be.

A top ten film for me, script, actors and direction all wonderful. My only criticism, other than the short time that Orson Welles was on screen (unavoidably due to the death of his character) is that, as others have commented here, the portrayal of Sir Thomas More fails to acknowledge in any way his campaign against Bibles printed in English or his approval of burning Protestants at the stake 🇬🇧
@garyraines75113 күн бұрын
Film-maker forgot to include the Fact that St. More tied hundreds of English to the Stakes and Burned Them Alive. Constantine never intended that when he invented your Church.

I've played Thomas More in the stage play the movie is based on, and one of the hardest things about it was trying not to just mimic this performance, which is just about flawless, flawless by Scofield and by Shaw. First rate in every way.
@kennethpurscell2 күн бұрын
I actually asked this of a community theater actor who played More. How did he avoid Scofield's influence? (Which, in my opinion, he had done.) His answer? Step 1 was to avoid watching the movie at all for months after he'd been cast!

Moore was right, thar miss Ann was nothing but that wicked king's concubine nor any of his concubines that followed, just as that Miss Camilla Parker Bowel Is nothing but Charles III's concubine and there's literally nothing anyone can do, not Charles, not Mr. Welby or anyone else.

0:43 -- "Thank God, there's only one fool on the Council!" One of the great lines from the screenplay of this movie which should register with the Dems & Repubs in American politics -- were those men & women actually conscious. Alas, they are too foolish, too ignorant & too arrogant to understand its ironic truth.

Such slipshod language in an otherwise brilliant screenplay. Nobody was trying to procure a divorce. It was an annulment that was being sought. A Cardinal would know that difference.

He was also perfectly willing to burn people at the stake for such "crimes" as translating the Bible into English or disputing the calculation of the easter date. At the end of the day, he was a bloody politician, and canonizing him was a cynical gesture by the Catholic church.

Interestingly the same forces that made this excellent film and popularizated Saint Sir Thomas More in the 1930's to 60's (he was canonized in 1935, perhaps the pinnacle of the English Catholic Resurgence, this film 1967), this same forces tried to demoralise him jn the late 1980 and 1990 accusing him infutiles and anachronic & empty academic works of been a fanatic catholic, authoritarian platonist and with totalitarian aspirations, blablabla. Today a film like this could not be done. Millenials needs a.sexy Henry VIII and gen Z ia too stupid to know Roman Numerals. I hope this kind of people goes to the hell with Thomas Wolsey and Cromwell.
