Very cool! I know you selected two different models of module, but the lettering on the two showed that one could handle 15 amps maximum and the other could handle 6. This is something to keep in mind when dealing with activities including a higher number of amps. I really enjoyed the video!

Someone thought that connecting one peltier to 12V and one to 5V was wrong and that peltiers did not work at lower voltage. Well, they work just as well at lower voltage, but of course the power gets lower. A peltier is a resistive load, so lowering the voltage to 50 % will decrease the power to 1/4. In this case, going from 12 to 5 V reduces the power (and heat) to about 17.4 %. And doing this to the upper (colder) peltier is necessary to acheive the low temperature. The lower one, the one connected to the heat sink, must move both modules´ dissipating power to the heat sink. So, if both have the same electric power the lower one will have to move both its own total power PLUS the same power generated in the upper one. This makes it much warmer on its "cold" side. The result would be about the same as with only one peltier unless you add some water cooling or so, which is very unpractical if you plan on building your own wine cooler, camping cooler or freezer. However, when having just 5V applied to a 12V peltier the power is only 17.4%. So the lower peltier will only have to transport 1.174 times its own power. This makes the cold side a little bit warmer than normal, but not much. And then the upper (low power) peltier will have a fairly cold hot side, much colder than room temperature. And that means its cold side will get pretty cold, like in this video. However the cooling POWER will be rather low because the low power of the upper peltier. Let´s say you build a cooler in which you place a sixpack of beers and you want to cool them from 25 C to 10 C. With the stacked peltiers it will take much longer (because of lower cooling power) than with a single peltier unit at 12V. However, with a single unit the temperature will not go much lower than 15 - 20 C below room temperature at all (using normal isolation material), while the temperature will continue to get lower with the stacked peltiers, way below the freezing point but very slowly. In the video only the surface of the peltier is cooled, which is very different from cooling several liters of beer, wine, milk or food. So, with one peltier you get a decent efficiency cooler for food and drink if you only need cooling, not freezing. With stacked peltiers like in the video you get a low efficiency freezer. So, a coolbox with stacked peltiers will take longer to reach 15 C below room temperature, however it will keep getting colder until far below the freezing point if the isolation of the box is efficient. So, if you want a freezer to keep one package of ice cream frozen, this might be a way to do it. However, if you want to cool down a lot of beer cans 10 - 15 C below room temperature in a reasonable time, a single unit (or more in parallell) is a better choice. About the parallell setup, there is a theoretical discussion using an interesting software here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ebujoK5z0NfXiok.html , about ten minutes into the video. The calculations indicate that putting more peltiers in parallell while lowering the voltage / power will increase their efficiency. A simple way to check this without having a multiple voltage source would be to use four of them, two in series and two such pairs in parallell. Then they all get 6V and the total power will be the same as with one peltier at 12V. Then build a cooler where you can use either setup. Cool down a certain amount of room temperature water (a liter or so) to 10 C below its initial temperature. Check how much time it takes. Then do the same with the other setup. Will it be quicker with the four in parallel than with just one peltier? It would be an interesting experiment to check if his theoretical results are correct.

It could be said simpler. 1. Power proportion of stacked Peltier elements depends on temperature difference symmetry regarding "room" temperature - if cold side difference needs to prevail, then respective cold-side element should be less powered than hot side one, but as temperature difference get closer to symmetric, so does power of elements. 2. Preference of stacked ("in-series") versus standalone or "in-parallel" design depends on required temperature difference - generally, up to about 30 kelvin standalone/parallel is preferred, above that value - stacked one.

more effectively you can cool the hot side of a peltier the cooler the cold side will get, so stacking is an incredible way of making one of the peltiers super cool, well done, think i could actually make a Mini AC using that sort of temperature and super hydrophobic sprays to prevent condensation build up and frost on the pipes / peltier
@Sugurain
@Sugurain 4 ай бұрын
Stacking peltiers does make the final temperature colder, however, stacking greatly reduces the heat transfer speed. Let's say you could transfer 40W of heat with one peltier, with two stacked that would fall to 5-10W.

what you do is mount the peltier on a piece of insultaion...put heat sinks fans on each side... duct the unwanted air from the outside of your cooling zone...then recirculate the inside-an open air of sorts. the quesiton is how strong is your fan ? how much air do you wish to circulate ? a standard room is 800 cubic feet. these little cooling fans on pc's circulate 42 feet per minute at max power.so a rig would require 15-16 peltier systems to effectively cool a room ....you get the idea

The lowest attainable temperature depends on many things. From the room temperature, the cooler design, the heat conducting paste. It is important that the lower module has a higher cooling power. The lower module operates from 12 volts, the top 5 volts.

because phase change heat pumping is MUCH more efficient than peltier heat pumping (300% electrical efficiency vs 5% electrical efficiency) Peltiers have a lot going for them but overall efficiency isn't one of their advantages and whilst they work ok in small sizes, this means they don't scale up very well

@ernonemethy2679
@ernonemethy2679 6 жыл бұрын
The dissipated heat of thermoelectric module from the hot side is the summation of the input electric power and the absorbed heat from the cold side. The dissipated heat is always large and around 3 times the absorbed heat. When stacking Peltier modules on top of another, you have to make sure that the dissipated heat of the top one is less than or equal to the cooling power of the lower one.

It is important that the lower module has a higher cooling power. Module 12706 can also be used, but then the attainable temperature will not be this low.
@ulrichkalber9039
@ulrichkalber9039 6 жыл бұрын
the Lower Module has to cool all the heat the higher module has transported PLUS the heat the higher module produces itself(waste heat) then the used cpu cooler has to cool the originally transported heat plus the waste heat of the first module plus the waste heat of the second module.

whatever the power supply current, the load will only use the max current design.. even your psu gives 30 amps, the peltier will pull only the needed amps..

If two identical modules are placed on the top of each other, the upper module must be connected to a lower voltage.
@daffygrey
@daffygrey 5 жыл бұрын
Try using two stacks of two modules. Wire the two lower modules in parallel, and the upper two in series. That way the lower two will have 12v across them and the upper two will have the potential divided to 6v each.

that's not how the thermometer is supposed to be used....turn it on for a few seconds then let go...if I hold the trigger on mine the temperature will continue in the same direction...meaning if something is cooler or hotter than the surrounding environment...air...it will continue past its actual temperature after a few seconds even when taking the temperature of the air coming out of the ac vents at a known temperature..I have seen it go 30f past the known temperature of the refrigerant flowing through the ac evaporator coil using gauges as I am a hvac tech..which is impossible because the refrigerant can not get that cold in a properly working ac system in houses because of the condensation that forms on the evaporator coil while blowing hot and humid saturated air over the coil will cause it to freeze and block the air from passing over the evaporator thus preventing it from doing its job and cooling the air...using this is not the same as a hand held thermometer everyone is used to...this is no different than the thermometers used in dr office or hospital in the ear...and they literally have it on for 1 sec to get an accurate reading...you will get false readings if you hold it on for an extended period of time because it senses infrared radiation and not the actual temperature itself like a regular thermometer...take a few short burst readings and then average them for the true temperature if it's a critical measurement...everything in the universe gives off infrared radiation so getting false readings is easier than my ex girlfriend...I swear that bitch had springs on her thighs that prevented them from closing...

Mostafa Mohamed Peltier modules are solid state heat transfer devices, typically used to cool CPUs in gaming machines. They could be used to make fridge/freezers without bulky compressors.
