BTW: all the quinacridone colors are known to be the most aggressively staining. There are many others of them. I love them too, because they are usually the most transparent as well.

It depends on the brand and how finely ground the pigment is. Phthalos are known to be highly staining and non granulating, for example, but they're actually the opposite in their "natural" state and are intentionally treated to make them that way. I have a PV19 and PV55 that both granulate, despite being quinacridones, as well as a PB15 which is a phthalo.

Late answer, but maybe it is a good reminder for others that read this. You don't always have to buy new colours. you can also check the colours you have, I am sure if you've got certain size of a watercolour collection, chance is very high there are already paints that include staining pigments like phthalos or quinacridones. you can also experiment with waterproof colourful inks for the lower layers of you painting and then add watercolour on top of those. I am telling you this as someone with also way too much paints and bad self control when it comes to wanting to try new pigments..

Would love to see a paper comparison in the future! I started working on Fabriano paper years ago at your recommendation! The staining watercolors are interesting but I’m afraid of the idea of not being able to fix my hard accidental edges lol

Try these with Synthetic Ox Gall! I love the medium, but in my experience, it can make even the most staining pigments lift and move like gouache, no matter how dry it is! You have to plan around this and get used to the learning curve but once you do then it technically isn't a flaw in the medium.

Woohoooo! I'm so happy for you. :) I remember all the disappointment that followed after Fabriano changed the sizing of the paper or whatever else they did to it. And I love following your recommendations, so I tried out the Hahnemühle Collection and also the Clairefontaine paper, and it's great to have different paper options for different projects. But these staining colors, I mean now you can have different effects on the same paper for the same project if you so choose ... I love Schmincke watercolor anyway, so where's my shopping basket? :D

@@LiobaBrueckner It's Golden's watercolor line. I love them! They are rich in pigment, move wildly in water and many are staining and layer like a dream. Dr. Oto Kano has a series showing all of the colours in the line, there you can see which ones are staining and layer well. Personally I love the quinacridones and several others. 🥰

@@LiobaBrueckner Golden's watercolor line, they're quite expensive, especially outside of the US. They use Aquazol as its binder instead of gum arabic. In my experience they are very colorful, rich in pigment (because they have more pigment and use less binder than regular watercolors) and very staining. They also behave somewhat differently than regular watercolors and this might make you love them, hate them, or appreciate them for how different they are. If you plan to combine them with traditional watercolors do a test before doing so. Jenny Granberry uses them and has several videos on youtube where she reviews them and does paintings with them. The High Chroma set is my fav because of how vibrant it is.

I should let you in on the fact that watercolors have all levels of staining, some are partly and some are extremely. Some of the manufacturers give you a degree from 1 to 4. There are many gorgeous colors out there- I did mention the quinacridone colors which are all rich, staining beautifully transparent colors, in addition, colors can have varied traits, depending on how the manufacturer processes the colors (to some degree). Even the colors vary from brand to brand depending on the source. So that is what makes watercolors so much more interesting to me. Not only do you need to select the color you want but also what do you want it to do? Do you want a transparent color or an opaque or somewhere in between, and then there is granulation and flocculation, which sometimes seems opaque or highly textured. The variety is quite endless especially when you mix them. For my colors I have a chart which lists all the various characteristics: stain, granulating, trans to opaque (4 steps)& most important light permanence. That way I can quickly pick what I need. That is also why, you may need a larger selection and not just work from the same palette for every painting in my opinion. I select a palette for each project I work on and they are never the same! It is so exciting!!!

Also if people don't like what I do they are entirely free to unsubscribe - I am HAPPY when they unsubscribe.
