Staining watercolours are good for layering and glazing. Most colours also have high tinting strength.

So that's why my glazes were so terrible! I was using non-staining paints. Thank you so much for this video, it's so helpful! I'm using staining paints now, and my glazes are turning out so much better now.

Thanks Teoh. I made a 12 color transparent pallet then realized 9 out of the 12 colors are staining. Good thing I enjoy glazing.😁

I'd love to hear which ones you are finding for non staining. I don't believe Teoh mentioned the non-staining watercolors too much, mostly he explained the staining ones, besides you may have discovered more.

Thank you! This was an excellent demonstration of staining, glazing, and non staining colors! Very clear! I think I will make two palettes, one with staining and another with non-staining colors. It's easy to get them mixed up while painting. Now to research which are which and make up some color charts.

When I was new to watercolor I purchased high quality paints such as Daniel Smith and was first surprised at everything staining like my palettes. Then I was frustrated because I wasn’t getting the transparency and other delightful results my KZfaq teachers were getting. My skies wouldn’t be that lovely sheer blue color because I was using staining paint. Anyway, practice itself taught me. I’m always fascinated by how you often mix colors on the paper while it’s still wet. Not in this video but other ones. That has really inspired me. Swatching ahead of time on scrap paper is the best. Thank you!!

Where you mix colour, and how long you mix, and how long you wait for the paint to dry all matters depending on the look you want.

Catherine I also noticed this when stepping up from student paints to professional (Daniel Smith) I was thinking after seeing my palate "Oh no, these are all staining colors". but really they were just heavily pigmented and no fillers.

This was very interesting to watch. I liked both cars and it was interesting to see how different you were able to make them. I also did not know you could get the paper so close to white again after using the cerulean blue. I do not think I am patient enough to do much glazing, and it looks like I would need a lot of practice to be able to get close to the colors I was trying for. I feel I learned a lot today. Thanks!

I do paint in layers, but I didnt do pure layering like a printer because that require precision that I dont have.. another way to paint in layer is the Grisaille technique where you build layers of color on a monochrome painting (usually done in sepia).. this way, you dont need to worries about anything but the color since the value already there.

Thank you for this video! As I'm getting back into watercolor, this video was so helpfull, the gears now clicked in my head. I usually work with very matt poster paint, gouache, alkyd and acrylic for photo realism. I also adore your sketching style as it has helped me relax more while sketching. Thanks for making painting more fun for me, i love your videos and your falcon pen art is gorgeous! The pilot falcon is my primary fountain pen, i was wondering what ink you use most consistently in your pen? I mostly use noodlers black. I will have to check out your patreon. Hope you are having a good day.

@@teohyc Ok. I like to wait. It gives me time to get more ideas for the painting. But for bristol or drawing paper kuretake and rotring ink is my favorite, kuretake black is also very nice with dip pens because you can use both alcohol and watercolor. But kuretake ink dries almost as slow as noodler black. Thanks again.

Perhaps I have misunderstood what you said. As I understand it, when doing layers with staining colors la6 down the least staining color first, let it dry, then use the next color (normally one that is a bit more staining than the first)
@teohyc
@teohyc 4 жыл бұрын
If you use less staining colours, they can be affected with subsequent layers. E.g. If you layer Cerulean (non-staining) first and some other colour layer, the first layer can be affected. Basically, if you want to remove Cerulean, you can use wet tissue or clean brush to "erase" or lift Cerulean easily.

Very helpful video, thank you! I have the 30 watercolor Koi set and I was confused why the color would lift up everytime i dabbed a little napkin, as opposed to what I saw in videos when other artists used napkins. I actually just ordered the daniel smith essential set which are coming tomorrow. Do you know which ones are staining and which ones aren’t?
@surveyguyor8958
@surveyguyor8958 3 жыл бұрын
I know this is a year late, but I buy daniel smith colors from Jerry's Artorama. When selecting the paints, they have different columns. Stock number, Name, Price. there also is a column with a little letter (document) symbol. When i click on that, it comes up and tells me all the details. granulating, staining, pigments, and level (1-4)

Hi Teoh! Quick questions if you the answer... when doing a monochromatic painting, let's say a portrait... what's better? A non staining color, a low staining, staining.... (I supposed high staining is not a option, but I honestly don't have a clue!) And also, granulating or non granulating? I hope u get to read this and be able to help me here! 😊 Thx in advance! 🥰
@teohyc
@teohyc Жыл бұрын
It depends on the effect you want to achieve. If you want granulation and texture, use granulating paint. Whether the paint is staining or not is not that important unless you use laying or if you need to lift paint off the table.

@TetianaDesign
@TetianaDesign Ай бұрын
If you are asking about Daniel Smith: Mayan Red isn't staining, also Cadmium Red Scarlet Hue and Cadmium Red Med Hue (but the hue leans to orange, and they are semitransparent). Also Anthraquinoid Scarlet is transparent non-staining warm (orangy) version of red. All these reds are not absolutely non-staining, but close
