Great work Mike . I could never build something like that . I’d hazard a guess that half the critics couldn’t either . You keep doing what you’re doing , your car , your choices . Oh by the way , Binky is finished , get cracking slacker 😉😂

"Finished" might be a stretch. Painted and largely assembled, yes, but they're still working on it. Various things cropped up when they tried to make it drivable and the interior hasn't been completely ironed out just yet. Hopefully sometime soon. I'm looking forward to seeing it run and then to see what their next plans are after they drive it around a bunch and then finally finish the Escargot. They've mentioned a carbon fiber bodied car that they've got a lot of the pieces for, so maybe they'll try that, or maybe they'll custom-make another homologation special like Binky. Only time and funding will tell.

Very compact engine and transmission set, impressive to know that something so small is capable of over 1000 hp. I believe you made a great choice considering the application the car will have. I love every Glovehand appearance. Last, while I'm not currently using spacers on my car, as a Mechanical Engineer I agree that they are completely safe if they are mounted correctly, and are even more suitable on your car that has already considered spacers in the suspension design.

I think what's throwing people off about the spacers is that on regular cars, with no upgraded steering geometry or components, it can cause fatigue failures and other issues simply because the components weren't designed to handle it. The comment you made about it being basic the same as more backpad is pretty much correct, the only issues with spacers vs a thicker back pad is just continuous material uniformity for stresses and strain and the like. But even that isn't much of an issue. I just think people are applying knowledge of running stock components with spacers vs newly designed engineered components. Everything is safe if there's enough safety factor built in. Keep on killing it man. Always enjoy starting out my Tues/Thurs with the vids. I can't wait until I get enough capital built up myself to start building even some basic racecars and hopefully work my way up to what you do.
@stanceworks
@stanceworks 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly though, there’s a lot of unfounded fear in this comment. Spacers (high quality, hubcentric ones) are safe on stock components. That’s what they’re meant for. It’s totally safe to run spacers on an otherwise factory car. If it wasn’t, companies like H&R would have been sued into oblivion by this point.
@RogueViirus12
@RogueViirus12 2 жыл бұрын
@@stanceworks You're right, I had some bad wording/phrasing in my previous comment. Properly engineered ones for sure have no issues. I think what's fueling the wheel spacer fear is a lot of consumers lean towards the cheap options for spacers/adapters and then have the failure issues associated with those lesser quality parts. Goes back to the safety factor issue. Good quality parts come with a price tag reflective of their engineering costs (usually, more cost doesn't always mean better obviously) where the engineers put a lot of calculations and thought process into their design, material choice, etc. vs a knockoff one made of weaker materials. I actually did a whole project on this concept with wheels back when I was in engineering school, compared Rota wheels and their material composition vs the Volks or Rays they were knocking off. I had CAD models I ran FEA on and everything. Even assuming a perfect replica, the weaker materials Rotas are built with resulted in like a 50% weaker wheel or the like in sudden impact loads like hitting a mild pothole. I'd have to dig up my report for the exact values, it's in a box somewhere in my storage unit. But I'm sure this applies to cheap alternatives in any component and then amplifies the stigma of "X part is bad" because more people are exposed to the weaker versions of things. We all want our builds to cost less, so I get why people do it. It just comes down to knowing where it's worth spending the extra cash on. You clearly are taking the time to think through everything and taking everything into account. I know you'll be fine!
@gospelwraith
@gospelwraith 2 жыл бұрын
Loved the rant at the end. Not sure what people don't get as it's super simple. You've got a big caliper and want to run wheels with a good size lip. Even noobs in the wheel game know that in order to get good lip, you need to go low disk and when you do that, you start hitting calipers. A spacer is a necessity for max lip with big brakes. Keep up the awesome work, man.

I have 3/4" spacers on the front of my NASCAR Cup car to push the front wheels out just a tad to make it handle perfect on road courses. I was running 1/4 spacers all around, now it's 3/4" spacers in front. And NARCAR hubs could handle as wide a spacer as I wanted... I did replace my stock NASCAR stubs with far longer Grade 8 studs. The strength is there, everything is fine... Just as Mike said. Spacers can be done correctly, and do serve a very good purpose!

Nice job explaining the wheels (again)! You're right, I think a lot of folks missed the whole point. I think that the reason that so many people have an issue with spacers, is because there are so many cheap cast pieces of sh*t out there, and customers that can't read directions. Spacers made from solid 6061-T6 aluminum and properly machined, installed, and maintained are no different than any other component on the car. You're right. They are a tool, one of many.

I believe the hate for spaces is due to the extreme misuse of them on vehicles while no other suspension geometry is taken into consideration. Hell, I hate them too when used incorrectly by people who don't understand how to use them a tool. It's similar in contect to someone using a cresent wrench as a hammer. Use a spacer as a suspension tuning tool like Mike has here is how they are supposed to be used. Most dont realize while Mike has invested hundreds of hours into his suspension design, it will still need tuning when the vehicle is complete. The use of a spacer also gives Mike another "axis" of adjustment in his tool box. Not only can that "axis" be ajusted for tuning the suspension as a function. It gives him the adjustment of the vision(look) he may want later for fitment of tires or different size wheels.

"Spacers are dangerous".... Always makes me laugh, I think there is some confusion around when that statement is and is not true. Spacers are not dangerous in the least, spacers used improperly are dangerous. Throwing 9" spacers on your (bone stock) hubs along with a deep negative offset wheel to widen your track width, for example, is dangerous because it places greater torsional stresses on your control arms, hubs and mounting hardware than they were specced for. Otherwise there is mechanically 0 difference between a 1" spacer and a different wheel with either a 1" greater negative offset or a 1" larger back pad. The geometry, scrub radius etc remains the same. Spacers used with the proper engineering to support them are not any more dangerous than without and when you are talking 0 - 3" spacers you are basically within tolerance for the different wheel offsets most manufacturers factor in to their engineering. I guess you could say spacers are a useful, safe tool unless used by a tool 🤣😜

We use spacers on our race car, to meet the various track rules for different sanctioning bodies. Track width might be 60 1/4 inches, if Mike builds his car with a 60” width, whats he gonna do, rebuild his car with an extra 1/4 “ ? - NO LOL!! add a spacer, go race lol I would guess ppl are confused with putting a 2 inch spacer to make your wheels look cool? In stead of buying the correct offset. an average street car doesn’t Usually have strong enough wheel hub, thus shortening its life. Two ways to look at it… Do it Right Or Do it Right Now I can’t wait to hear that motor start!! Giver Mike!!

Lovin' the build Mike. I love a nice clean classic, but as a hot rodder at heart, I get it ! I was hooked in when you were doing the Model A a couple of years ago but somehow I missed this build when you started, but I have been binge watching this build for the last few weeks since I found it and I'm addicted. Keep up the great work !! Hangin' to see you back on the Model A too and maybe one of those 1602's. As the suspension work..........I would love more on the design aspects......Maybe a separate vid just on the design process you went through, geometry details, software usage, blah, blah,......some of us geek out on this shite !

Looks amazing, just one suggestion if you end up seing this comment, I would tie in the 3rd mounting location on the trans to prevent the threads from being ripped out of the other two holes I’ve seen it before 🙏🏼

Couldn't agree more with the "rants". People that say spacers are dangerous probably doesn't even know how to use a torque wrench or even know what PCD, CB, ET are. I could go on confusing them by saying M12 x 1.5. Cheers!

Wheel spacers are dangerous, they put extra stress on wheel bearings and other junk.. "I could go on confusing them by saying M12 x 1.5. Cheers!" Really, because this is my day of confusion v = ∆s ∆t v = lim ∆t→0 ∆s = ds ∆t dt v = ∆s ∆t v = lim ∆t→0 ∆s = ds ∆t dt thread sizes seem a bit of a joke to me.

@@fredderf551 Wheel spacers don't put any more stress on a wheel bearing than a wheel with the same offset.

@@fredderf551 do you think a wheel that has the same offset such that the tire is in exactly the same place as one with a spacer magically doesn't impart the same leverage? I may be funny, but I'm also correct.

Well I understood the first time you explained but I also watch alotta content like this and they've had to do the same thing mainly for the brakes to fit. BTW the engine looks all kinda sexy in the car!! Now I'm hoping everything comes together rather quickly only because I'm anxious since I've been watching from the beginning. And I know its killing me and probably everyone else watching that's been waiting to see these wheels your doin all this work for, so hopefully we get to see them soon?? My fingers are crossed!!
