I decided to stand develop some HP5 in the freezer. If stand developing in the fridge is called Coldinal, I guess this is Frozinal?

A week long development? Perfect. Like going back to the 90s and mailing film to be developed.

I'm unironically really intrigued with the freezer effect.. When I first got into darkroom photography, I was using a severely dusty enlarger and didn't realize it, but it gave my prints this wild effect.. I've been chasing that dragon ever since.. and you might've just unlocked something for me.. thanks man

i would love to see some development in dentist X-ray developer like Carestream. experiences with dilution and temperature would be very interesting

@@atticdarkroom i did some experiments, mostly on making contact positives and enlarging experiences on bigger X-rays for artistic purposes. also used the developer but didn't have the discipline to 'discover' its properties with any cientific method. i use it 1:2 (33% carestream on water) for 4 minutes with kodak 5222 if you want a start point.

I have a 5l bottle of expired Carestream but use it rarely cause the results too unpredicted. also even with a 1+50 dilution developing time is too short sometimes (less than a minute), also the film looks bad and fogging. maybe I'm doing something wrong... well I have a lot of expired Xtol and prefer having fun with it

I really love how you also post videos when the weird thing you try is just "Eh. This wasn't worth it" or "This actively made everything worse". It's really useful to have answers to what DOESN'T do cool things in addition to what DOES do cool things. I've had times where I've thought of something that might be cool, but you already tried it, and it wasn't, so I didn't waste my time/film/developer.

Okay, I now wonder if there is an antifreeze agent that would not disturb the development process or film so you could rule out the thawing time counting towards development time. Maybe Ethanol at ~20%? Though all that might do is disolve the emulsion...

There is a little bromide drag on the picture of the Steel Bridge behind the dock and pilings. Those superbright white piling caps soaked up so much developer.

I wonder if the smudges are because of the frozinal "delaminating" from the film at parts due to shrinkage/expansion? A solution could be freezing rodinal separately, crushing the frozinal block to extremely fine pieces, and packing your case with that. Maybe a nice way to stand develop in the open in antarctica.

Maybe adding something like glycerol could lower the freezing point, given that it doesn’t interfere with development

I've started a darkroom photography class and all we have are metal reels and tanks. It's tricky but I've done it! It's exciting! I also just got a medium format camera, and my professor says that we do have reels for medium format! If only the Pentax 67 I got came with the TTL finder...

interesting follow up would be to freeze it and then place the block of film ice on a rack so the developer melts off into a pan below. that will definitely leave some weird streaks

the first time I tried a stand development was with hc110 but I used the Rodinal dilution and time (1:60 for an hour) and completely toasted my film. only afterward did I find out HC110 stand is really 1:160 for 45 minutes

Did you use room temp water or fridge temp water while developing the rodinal in the fridge? Maybe the gradient comes from the fridge cooling the liquid from bottom to top and oudside to the inside slowing down the development during the cooling.
@tylercarson8032
@tylercarson8032 9 ай бұрын
If the gradient you're getting only shows up in some of the frames, it could be a could be an issue with a laggy shutter causing a gradient exposure across the frame.. Are you shooting with a camera with a vertical shutter?

Prolly not a great idea, but what about using an alcohol like vodka, absinthe, or everclear as a base to mix in the rodinal to prevent freezing? off the cuff thought and not thought through at all.
