One of my favorite Jerry songs. Only Jerry could make two chords over and over again so beautiful
This version is from the View From the Vault DVD if you are interested.
Also, this is not Brent Mydland's last show as a few commenters thought, Brent's last show was less than a month later though at the World Music Theater.
Here is a link to it: www.archive.org/details/gd1990... Hope you enjoy :)

It actually hurts. I saw these guys many hundreds of times with my brother, and when the music started it was if there was no other world, nothing else existed. You could just dance, sway and bliss out, meet someone's eyes and break out in grins or at times find tears running down your cheeks out of pure happiness. We lost Jerry and I lost my brother and life goes on, but there is a great void where something wonderful once existed that is now filled with cherished memories. Love you both, guys.

I am 15 years old and the dead is just beautiful to me. Ever since I can remember my dad has played the dead for me in the car; on the way to baseball practice, on the way back, and whenever he gets anywhere near the radio. I have learned to love the dead and what they have put out. Standing on the Moon is by far my favorite song by them, and it brings back so many memories of me and my dad. When I grow old I know the dead will for sure be played to my kids in the car and then to their kids as well. ❤️

Definitely drugs were a huge neg force for him and many of us. But his main issues (related to drugs of course) were poor diet and exercise habits. He developed diabetes and ended up not being to survive the constant abuse of drugs because of his poor physical state by 1995.

I hear you, but drugs-specifically psychedelics-were an vital catalyst for creating both the Dead's music and live performance structure. Like anything, drugs are inherently neither good nor evil--even heroin--it's all about what you do with them that matters. Well, I take that back...crack is pure fucking evil! What a horrible high-5 minutes of semi-bliss, and then you want to claw your eyes out unless you get another hit! Or so I've been told...

Standing on the moon I got no cobweb on my shoe Standing on the moon I'm feeling so alone and blue I see the gulf of Mexico As tiny as a tear The coast of California Must be somewhere over here, over here Standing on the moon I see the battle rage below Standing on the moon I see the soldiers come and go There's a metal flag beside me Someone planted long ago Old glory standing stiffly Crimson, white and indigo, indigo I see all of southeast Asia I can see El Salvador I hear the cries of children And the other songs of war It's like a mighty melody That rings down from the sky Standing here upon the moon I watch it all roll by, all roll by Standing on the moon With nothing else to do A lovely view of heaven But I'd rather be with you Standing on the moon I see a shadow on the sun Standing on the moon The stars go fading one by one I hear a cry of victory And another of defeat A scrap of age old lullaby Down some forgotten street Standing on the moon Where talk is cheap and vision true Standing on the moon But I would rather be with you Somewhere in San Francisco On a back porch in July Just looking up to heaven At this crescent in the sky Standing on the moon With nothing left to do A lovely view of heaven But I'd rather be with you, be with you

The first time I heard this live. Around 1990, Jerry was singing it & I was blown away. I could see Jerry putting all of himself into the song. It was one of the first times they must have premiered it, I realized how beautiful of a song writer Jerry was. I was completely taken back. Then, I went home to study the lyrics & learned it was really written by Robert Hunter. It was at this moment it dawned on me that Jerry allowed Robert to write because Robert expressed Jerry's heart the best.

@@jharv813 come on, be kind. there is a wistfulness that comes to thoughtful musicians and songwriters. we all have to look at our mortality, and they way all things are marked by impermanence, as Buddhists put it. your brth certificate, as one writer on death out it, has your death certificate in faint letters on the reverse, place, time, and cause still to be written in. once we know that, we can LIVE.

I remember listening to Jerry being interviewed and he was asked what he thought about fans taping their shows. His response was perfect jerry: he said that once he played a note he no longer "owned it"....it was out in the universe where he no longer laid any claim to it and it was open and available for everyone to do as they please with it. This openness and freedom to allow fans to tape concerts only helped to fuel their fan's loyalty and devotion. One other quick note: I have always loved that the Dead came out and played in simple clothes (shorts, jeans, tee shirts)....nothing stupid or fancy....it's all about the music not some act.

I had to hear this song (one of the last great Hunter/Garcia compositions), clicked on this version, & found it was recorded exactly 21 years ago, today... I remember my Dead Days like they were yesterday; I wish some were tomorrow. Thank Goddess Jerry lives on You Tube, a bit more tangibly than in my heart. I was so lucky to be alive & with the Dead when they shone; it is one of the greatest miracles of humanity that these guys came together, to make the most transcendent music ever heard...

@ExtraPencil2
@ExtraPencil2 6 жыл бұрын
Fragile Thunder I agree it's a different (though wonderful) energy , Dead & Co. But I never knew it was intentional. Like they didn't want anyone pretending to be Jerry, because ugh, not possible. That's why I like John Mayer; he's an amazing, intense musician with intuitive understanding of the Dead, but he doesn't mimic Jerry. I'd really like to understand what you mean, and then of course I'll listen to the band you suggested. I'm not a sarcastic person so please don't take this as anything other than what it says. Thanks for the insight.

A Friend of the Devil Love the dead they let me spin round and round and make me float. Maybe I better take another toke :) sit in my chair,close my eyes sing-a-long and smile. Whether it's shouting it out to,Fire on the Mountain or singing,you know you got such dark eyes Woooo.... Shaking it up with Sugaree and asking her to please forget she knew my name or telling Bertha Don't you come around here any more. I could always get a little dizzy spinning round and round with the girl that has rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes... I knew right away she was not like the other girls. Or go Trucking with the do-dah-man what a long strange trip it's been... become the Ripple singing let there be songs to fill the air. Feeling so free,flying with the birds singing their songs...tell me all that you know. Hiding out in a rock and roll band with Uncle Sam wave that flag...we're all confused,what to do. It Must Have Been the Roses got me so fallen in love... all I know is I could not leave her there. Feeling all melancholy Standing on the Moon watching the battle rage below. I watch it roll by, feeling the pain. So sometimes I feel like just Throwing Stones and singing ashes,ashes we all fall down or maybe go strutting with Cosmic Charlie... he's smooth as silk. But where ever I walk with Jerry and the boys I know they will ease my soul because there are So Many Roads. RIP Jerry... (reposted in memory of) Written by Hashman

In retrospect, there is no other experience like being at a Dead show. The live music, drums, space, but for me it was the crowd, and the fact that you would always see someone from a different time and place you knew, and greeted like a prodigal family member. The brotherhood and sisterhood was something I have yet to find an equal to, and doubt I will. A cultural phenomenon, unparalleled. The memories are as fresh as yesterday, and always have been, and always will be. God bless you Jerry.

You're right on it, kid. All that superficial stuff---hair, clothes, partying--is beside the point. It's music--ART. Created and played with integrity, full of meaning, that cuts right to the heart of human existence. And yes, Jerry Garcia was a special artist. The good news is he left an ENORMOUS amount of music behind, and as your experience proves, it still comes across. You didn't have to be there, any more than you had to be there to experience Bach or Chopin. Cheers to you. Keep on truckin
