If one desires realism in one's painting, this video addresses what's important. Drawing is most important, values are second. First one must learn how to see, then draw and paint what one sees. After one knows how to paint what one sees, then one can more powerfully interpret the subject.

Great to hear Joyce...as I mention in my lessons, learning how to paint realistically is pretty much the same as learning to play the piano...everyone can do this, doesn't require talent, but practice and proper instruction. Interpreting an image, redesigning your subject, that takes lots of practice and some talent. I wish you happy painting!

Initially, seeing only shape and value takes some practice when our brain insists on seeing specific detail. But here is a professional artist creating what he calls "sloppy" sketches and the entire thing falls into place. Mr Miller, your teaching technique is remarkable. In 25 minutes you have turned my approach to painting around to one that makes so much more sense. Many thanks.

Excellent again! Draw what you see -not what you think it is. In a short course I attended the tutor explained that you should be able to copy a portrait upside down and when you're finished turn it the right way up and it should be fine if you have done as you say.

When I was learning to draw very accurate.. I bought a Derwent proportional divider..was like $15 on Amazon, and it helped me so much. It is the one instrument that truly changed my art.. I highly recommend for anyone.. tracing just feels like u cheated and the graphs are so messy, the Stan slide move was pretty good too. Ill have to try.. But if anyone is trying to draw realistic art, get it, you will be so happy you did. Btw, If need for landscape and portraits, you should get a large one and a smaller one. Thanks for uploading these, ive binged watched all your vids today! You are a really inspirational teacher, and sounds like you truly care about teaching, and helping, thanks so much!

Thank you for your videos. I have always had problems with values. Mostly I draw with pastels, but am trying to teach myself watercolour ... hahaha. The problem I have is if I draw the picture first and then try to paint it doesn’t work. However, if I work directly with what I see i.e. paint shapes I have a better result. Many thanks ... I am glued to your videos.

I have the first stage of a portrait already posted, lesson 23...note the painting of the eye in detail. Stage 2 would be the other eye. Stage 3 the mouth, stage 4, the nose, etc. I would suggest that you follow that lesson, paint the eye of your portrait very slowly, then the other eye...using the same approach, then the nose, the mouth, etc...and you don't really need me to do a lesson of the whole portrait. Good luck, Stan

To simplify the number of values in a photo, one needs to increase contrast in a photo program, or on the copy machine. The greater the contrast, the fewer the number of values. One can get apps that increase contrast on your photos.

Hi Stan, I had the pleasure of receiving lessons from you at All Saints five or six years ago. I recently decided to pick watercoloring back up in my spare time, and was so excited when I found out about your KZfaq channel! These videos have been so incredibly helpful, especially in constantly reminding us what's the most important and simplifying everything. It's a truly wonderful and relaxing craft and being able to see myself improve over time and practice is so rewarding! I do have one quick question, if you don't mind answering: With most of the work I've done so far, the paper has had a tendency to sort of "buckle" and become wavy after the painting dries. Do you have any recommendations to combat this? I use pretty ordinary 90lb watercolor paper that I find at my school's bookstore, but am definitely open to changing that if it would help. Thank you for everything you do!
@Stanleylestermiller
@Stanleylestermiller 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Allie, nice to hear from you! So glad to hear you are painting. There are a number of ways to keep your paper from getting bumpy. You might type into youtube search, "stretching your watercolor paper". You'll find a number of ways to keep your paper flat throughout your painting, and how to keep your painting flat when you are finished. The easiest is to use 300 pound paper instead of 90 pound. One can also use a watercolor block...search for the meaning of that. I stretch my paper, wetting the back side, stapling the paper to gator board while the paper is still wet, using 140 pound paper. Let me know if you have more questions, feel free to email me, stan@stanmiller.net

Thanks for the suggestion. The most important issue in all painting is the design and composition. In lessons 1-3, I talk about this importance. Interestingly, these are my least viewed lessons. Whenever I look at another persons painting, it's always the design that moves me, or bothers me...but very few want me to talk about this. They prefer that I talk about technique and color, equipment, supplies...the least important part of painting. Never the less, I'll consider your suggestion...thank you.

Great video! Next time can you talk about what's the best brush to use, and maybe do a tutorial on how to paint trees? Ok ok, only joking...I love how you really simplify everything to "this is what's important, forget about everything else."
@Stanleylestermiller
@Stanleylestermiller 7 жыл бұрын
Any brush will work. I prefer watercolor brushes of course. And, generally, the more one pays for a brush, the better it is. The flat brush that I use in this video costs about $10...there are many, many flat brushes that would work just fine. As well, nearly any smaller brush will be just fine. In the spirit of the message of this lesson, it's not the brush, or the brand of paint, or even the brand of watercolor paper that's the issue when one's painting doesn't go well. I wish you the best Brad.

Stan, I guess my sarcasm didn't come through, but I appreciate the response! If you took my question seriously, you must have been shaking your head and rolling your eyes despite giving a friendly response. Anyway I've really been enjoying your videos and recommending them to other artists. After watching a few of your videos, these things run through my head, and are the first tips I would give to any beginning artist or artist struggling with a piece..."get the drawing right, get the value right...use any color you like!"
@Stanleylestermiller
@Stanleylestermiller 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brad, I got your humor clearly when you suggested a video on how to paint trees...but then you followed up with asking about the brush...so I thought maybe you were serious about that one. : ) You certainly understand my thinking on what's important in painting Brad, I wish you well!
