One more time...I paint lesson 16. Watercolor, use any brush, your fingers, any kind of paint, oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel. For brush control, see earlier lessons. Technique and brand of equipment is very unimportant. I apologize for saying again and again, "get your drawing right, get your values right...use any color you want...it doesn't matter", but hearing this and doing this is very important. If your drawing is bad, and your values are inaccurate, your painting will not look good.

A side note, this lesson alone makes watercolor and many other mediums so much more accessible for people. Everyone always rants about the cost of making art in a physical medium, and I think many give up because they don't want to 'waste' what they paid for.

"I apologize for saying again and again" ... we apologize and thank you for all your efforts. I have found lesson 16 extremely informative and crystal clear; it seems many people do not get the idea easily for some reason. Moreover this video was interesting to see how you get back the picture in shape after applying too much wet paint that run over some parts. I think I also have learnt something new from it. You are a great teacher as well!
@Stanleylestermiller
@Stanleylestermiller 7 жыл бұрын
The primary reason I did lesson 16 again is that too many students think that they need my exact brush. They need my palette, my colors. No, no, no... The primary reason for lesson 16 is to stress that one only needs accurate drawings and accurate values, nothing else matters. Bad brush, bad color, bad paper...no worries. But, again and again, get the drawing correct and get the values correct and your painting will work.
@uzenetkrisznek
@uzenetkrisznek 7 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree. I even found giving the brush size in books misleading. Instead they should stress that every manufacturer has different numbering system.

A great lesson. Applies to music and photography too. The gear you use isn't as important as how you use it. You can buy the most expensive brushes in the world, but that won't make you paint better. That being said, painting got a lot easier when I finally bought good brushes and high quality paints and paper.

@Stanleylestermiller
@Stanleylestermiller 5 жыл бұрын
I do enjoy Arches 300# but mostly use 140#, cheaper and very similar results. 300# does stay wet longer. Getting edges, avoiding edges is mostly keeping track of how wet the paper is at any given time, how wet your stroke is, when you put it down, the edge of that stroke, keeping an eye on it as you move on to other parts of the painting.

Hey Stan, I no longer teach because of this exact issue. THe workshops or lessons end up just being full of the same questions every time. What kind of yellow there, what blue paint is best, what brush. Students just obsessed with materials thinking that is even close to the important thing. I use to make it a point to go in my drawer pull out a few horrible brands, a home depot brush, etc. and show them that you can create an identical painting using materials from anywhere. Even then, they still dont want to hear it most of the time.
@Stanleylestermiller
@Stanleylestermiller 5 жыл бұрын
Ah yes Devin, it can kind of drive one nuts. But, this is one of the primary reasons I like to teach, to dispel the myths...kind of an art preacher, trying to clean up the silliness of what so many people think they need to do, to do good art. The myth of needing talent to do strong paintings. Passion, dedication, something they want to say, this is what is hard to teach.

I just went through all 25 tutorials in one sitting. I understand I can paint with my tongue or with my butt using all the fun, psychedelic colors i always use... as long as I have my drawing right and I dim the lights to check my values...but I still have ONE question. ***That's your cue to scream. Aaaaaaaahhhhkkkk! *Now, that you're done swearing at me, I want to know about white paint. (My crutch.) * I realize you will probably tell me to use white shoe polish or to make a white paste out of flour and water, but I am going to take the chance of offending you because I've tried Copic Opaque White (recommended) as well as watered down white acrylics, and both crutches leave a crusty, bubbly, chalky surface when painting over several layers of colorful mistakes. ... So, if you have any ideas or recommendations (other than chucking the painting) I would love to know. I promise not to ask which finger to use when spreading paint, because I think you might give me a visual demonstration that would make my grandma faint. Meanwhile, I'll try to find one of your workshops. Hugs, Tina.
