I love Star Trek. It's one of the most unique fandoms since it features multiple different properties in the same universe. Don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars, but something about Star Trek raises it to another level. There are so many shows that are unique in their own way. You have Star Trek T.O.S, Star Trek The Animated Series, Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Voyager, Enterprise, Star Trek Discovery, Star Trek Strange New Worlds, Star Trek Prodigy, Star Trek Lower Decks, and Star Trek Picard. There is something for everyone. Fans are a little bit less toxic than other fandoms. My theory is that because there are so many shows, everyone can agree on at least one show that is good. So if someone were to, let’s say, hate Prodigy, they may like Lower Decks, or maybe they think Next Generation is the only good Star Trek show. But because there are so many series, there is a better chance to link the fan love. I have met many Trekers in my life and have yet to meet someone I have nothing in common with.
One Star Trek show that I loved that tended to divide fans was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In it, Avery Brooks starred as Commander Benjamin Sisco. Unlike other Trek main characters, he wasn't a captain. Rather, he was a commander struggling with grief (and rage) after his wife was killed in an attack orchestrated by none other than Captain Picard when the Borg assimilated him as Locutus. The show centred partly around him being a single parent to his son, Jake, as well as his adventures commanding Deep Space Nine. It had a tremendous cast of characters, including René Auberjonois as the shape-shifter, Odo, Nana Vistor as Bajoran resistance veteran, Kira, Terry Farrell as Jadzia Dax, Alexander Siddig as Dr. Julian Bashir, Armin Shimerman's Quark, and many more. It even had some TNG holdovers like Colm Meaney as Chief O'Brien, and (later) Michael Dorn's Worf.
In this episode, we dig into how the show initially divided fans, but in hindsight is held up by many as one of the best Trek shows of all time.

David R Lentz, USA DS9 strove to differentiate itself from its predecessors. Giving it the benefit of the doubt, I cautiously decided to go with it, realising the chances of finding success, materially and creatively, in repeating the success of TOS (my favourite television series of all time) and TNG (which I came to enjoy-“The Measure of the Man” is one of the best episodes in all television-to admire, and to enjoy) limited. They for the most part succeeded, though the show still was deeply different from all expectations. It was as much frontier western as science fiction, which added a distinct piquancy to the stew that made the effort to distinguish itself from everything prior interesting, believable, clever, even intriguing in various places and numerous occasions. I came to enjoy it on its own merits, which is what its creators had endeavoured to achieve from the outset. My favourite DS9 character is LCdr Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell)-though I generally like the cast and their characters, especially Avery Brooks (Commander/Captain Benjamin Sisko). Yes, this initially had derived from my appreciation for her physical appearance (I like sleek brunettes); however, I quickly came to like her, and increasingly to admire her, especially for her keen intellect, her poise and confidence, her intensity in difficulty or conflict (I really like sleek, brilliant, high-spirited brunettes!). The one element about DS9 I greatly detest was the arbitrary, capricious, cynical “Prodótis ex machina” of Rick Berman denying Terry Farrell’s wish for less time (though for personal reasons, I would have missed her in her absence), summarily discharging her from the show. In this, he deprived all of us of her character’s participation in the series’s (long time in coming) dénouement and summation.
