I commented this a while back. I don't know if you monitor comments, but in season 5 there is a 2-parter that will be out of sync with your 2 episode format. It's not obvious because the episode names are "In Purgatory's Shadow" and "By Inferno's Light". If you want to watch them together you can watch the episodes either side of them together too, I've double checked and there are no spoilers whichever way you watch them. If Ollie doesn't read comments but has mods or patreon users that talk to him, please pass it along.

The scenes of bashir on the planet made me love his character even more. He’s just one of the best of us. Sort of the DS9 Picard. Noble, heroic, virtuous. But also someone we must protect. We need characters like Kira and Sisko who are more shades of gray so that the ones like bashir can be pure.

A philosophical difference about discipline: Jem 'Hadar commander kills his soldier for getting out of line, Sisko sends Worf to his room and grounds him for the rest of the mission. Once thing I'm glad about To the Death is it's bloodless. They originally wanted to show blood and be quite violent but they were over-ruled - and given we're seeing people being "decapitated" by axes and all sorts, that's probably for the best. Keeps it only a 12 rating, not a 15+.
@jasoncaldwell5627

@@jasoncaldwell5627 I'm not expert but I was around when the episode aired and TV back then was a lot more "mediated". What you could or could not show before certain timeslots (and this could depend on if you were "cable" or not - "affiliate" or not) or in my case in the UK, would mean you have stuff edited for violence/blood as TNG/DS9 were shown at 6pm on Wednesdays on BBC2 - directly AFTER kids programming (Cartoons - teenage turtles etc) finished at 6PM on BBC1 - it meant this episode could be aired in its full, without cuts of entire shots of blood on a corpse. It DOES mean, though, that it is "too clean" and "too unrealistic" - like, how bad can the Jem'Hadar be if any random person can kill them with a bloodless punch? These days on streaming or blu-ray or such, it's easier to show blood and violence. And TBH Trek CAN do it (TNG Conspiracy, TNG Yesterday's Enterprise, TNG Redemption, TNG Genesis) but that single shot that is 4 seconds long - if it is the centre-piece of an action/mystery plot - if it has to be cut for [geographical and cultural audience issues], it can destroy an episode. Way of the Warrior does this, too, btw.

The Quickening is one of my all-time favorite episodes of DS9. It is a fantastic story for Bashir. I love his entire journey through this episode. Superior direction by Rene Auberjonois (gotta love that crane shot at the end!). I also love that this episode really had no bad guys in it. Say what you want about Trivean but he was releasing patients from their needless pain and suffering. The scene where he rushes in and the patients are in agony crying out his name gives me chills every time, and then to see him holding up that baby above the crowd…so good! > Yeah I don't see Trivean as a bad guy at all he was just doing his job and stopping his people from suffering the only way he could. @@RolyPolyOllieReactions It's a sad realisation and something that DS9 does more than once - life is very grey, not black and white. Trivean was doing only what he knew he could do - alleviate suffering. If something is 100% fatal then let them go comfortably. There's a modern day "culture war" over this brewing. Doctors have a thing "to do no harm". But that can be taken in lawyer talk to mean "keep them alive as long as possible by any means possible". "do no harm" is not the same as "do what is right by the patient". and "right" can be interpreted in 1000 different ways. I don't have the answers to that and I don't pretend to. But I do know that watching this episode, I do at least *understand* Trivean. He is a character to be sympathetic toward, not hostile. imo. im 42. my mother was a nurse (retired now). In the 70s when she was in trauma / casuality wards, she has told me there'd be times when someone was so badly mangled - industrial accident, being run over at the chest etc - that the Consultants would ask everyone else except the Matron (head nurse) of the ward to leave the room - whilst Consultant, Matron and Doctor remained. When they went back in, the patient would have died peacefully and of "natural causes". What actually happened was the heads of surgery, medicine and nursing agreed "there's no way" and ... "assisted the person" into peace via and injection. Obviously this was never "official" and technically under UK law would be some sort of murder / manslaughter charge. And these days it's not possible to do (legit, if anyone is worried - it's not possible these days). I cannot say or not say what was right or wrong in those situations. I do know that if i was faced with 100% [shit life forever, and it'll only get worse until the day you die] - I'd like the ability to make my OWN decisions. And that is not evil. And neither was Trivean. I can imagine some circumstances where I'd be grateful for a Trivean.

2 of my all time favourite DS9 episodes of all time back to back. Which was especially great as they came sold on the same VHS tape back in the day when you could only fit 2 episodes on a tape... But DS9 was smart and only did the two parters as season openers.

Assuming they weren't here to enslave me to The Dominion. Every single one seems to be interesting and have their own unique personality quirks - Eris ("The Jem'Hadar"), Borath ("The Search"), Keevan ("later episode"), Yelgrun ("later episode") and Luaran ("later episode") each had their own traits, their own ... personality. I like how the Vorta are seen as individuals. Even the Jem'Hadar have individual personalities that we come across. Each is a person. TWO OF MY FAVORITE EPISODES! To The Death! Alright, Ollie- I've been hyping this one for weeks now- the callback to the Iconian Gateways, killer soundtrack, amazing new sets, Jem Hadar! An upper pylon destroyed! Sisko threatened! Drug use! O'Brien's speech! And best of all- we get to see Jeffrey Combs return- as Weyoun the Vorta! A shady character if there ever was one. Definitely an action packed episode. We finally get some nice dialogue with Dax and the Jem Hadar. I've barely seen her this season. Levar Burton knocked this out of the park for direction. I've seen this at least ten times over the years but, having just rewatched it now, it still stands up as a great episode with fast pacing, snappy dialogue and high stakes. The Quickening! If there's an episode that defines a character, it's this one for Julian. A lesser doctor (like a certain red haired ship's physician) would have gone home, filed a report and forgotten the entire planet- but NOT our man Bashir! Dax was a true friend here- and thee wasn't a peep about the crush Julian used to have on her, which I liked a lot- they became friends and colleagues. The acting from everyone was outstanding and the woman that played Ikoria in particular was sooooo good at conveying her pain without needing to make a sound- the way she shook as they turns on her side in one scene is so believable... The final scene where Sisko comes by to offer his congratulations but sees the determination and sadness in Julian so keeps it low key once again shows why he's the best Captain in Trek. No speeches, no pep talk- he just let his man work the problem. René Auberjonois directed this masterpiece of Trek and it's an episode worth rewatching. Two "S-TIER" episodes from a season full of real winners. (except The Muse)

To the Death does give us some depth to the Vorta and Jem Haddar. Curiously the first Vorta we saw had telekinetic powers, but that never comes up again. I think they decided she was a "one-off" experiment. I took longer to warm up to Bashir than most do. I really disliked him in Season one. He just struck me as arrogant and borderline on being a harasser. But I think this one finally, mostly, won me over. And it also underlined how truly horrific the Dominion can be to those who defy them. I always appreciated how The Quickening handled the issue of euthanasia. A very sensitive topic but it really shows that it's not a black and white issue. Julian is outraged at first when he sees what the local doctor is doing but the episode makes it clear that this man in not a villain. Trevean is a good man in a horrible situation who has nothing but bad options in front of him. Everything he does is to ease the suffering of his people and let them die with as little pain and as much comfort and dignity as he can manage. His commitment to his people is also shown at the end once Julian develops a vaccine. Trevean is all in on getting it out there and ending the Blight for future generations.

Somehow "To the Death" fell flat for me, but I'm not sure why. The ingredients sounded good but somehow it felt perfunctory. I guess it kind of was a trite story. "They have to work with their enemy to defeat a common enemy." The Iconian angle was slightly interesting but as far as the plot goes it was an irrelevant McGuffin. Obviously a nice callback, but still. Even the Jem Hadar assassinating Weyoun was obvious almost from the beginning.

Enter Jeffrey Combs' most iconic role on deep space nine. His charisma carries or steals every scene he's in.

what really has escaped me completely is why starfleet doesnt have any kind of real groundtroops. their security personell on board their ships seems so weak in comparison to even todays military. okay, they have much better weapons, but they wear no armor, no personal shields or any kind of protection or enhancements. especially during wartime, this feels so dumb....

Rene Obberjohn? Dude, you're Canadian, you should know how to pronounce French words. SMH

I suddenly thought that too, but I think I heard somewhere there are Provinces where many people don't know French that well. I don't know what Province he's from.

@@ThomasReeves-s7u French is an official language in Canada. If you want to work in the government, you have to speak it. When you go to school as a kid, French is one of the classes. It is not forced on you beyond that. So I can say: Mon Dieu, Je parle Anglais seulement! BUT! Ollie should know better.

@@PJAvenger I knew it was one of the official languages, but I guess I thought there were some rural Anglo areas anyway where they're pretty lapsed after High School.
