The Sovereign class Enterprise-E is one of the best looking ships in Star Trek, but does it hold up to a detailed analysis?

There's actually an explanation for why using the joystick in place of the console for manual flight: it's that much better. The questionable design choice isn't the joystick, it's why it took them so long to add it.

And even more puzzling: why they didn't have it at the helm. As the captain, you micromanage as little as possible.

Lol I loved the questionable design choices part. And impressive that you came up with a good explanation to the hole accessible only through Jeffreys tube.

I actually loved those questionable choices because it made the Sovereign more believable as a ship design (IMO). As a new capital ship, jampacked with all of the latest design ideas that Starfleet could come up with, it makes perfect sense that some of them won't work in real life. The warp core shield is super believable: a good theory that failed in its execution. This makes the Sovereign feel like a more successful Zumwalt class: a quantum leap forward with a lot of bugs to sort out.

Honestly, I don't think the Enterprise E's more hardened military look and the removal of Civilians off Federation ships was a step back. I think it was the stupid finally getting smacked out of Starfleet after one too many civilians died when they hadn't needed too. Took em long enough.

Disagree. I understand that it's more practical and safe in any realistic situation, but, to me, the presence of families on a deep-space exploratory starship was really symbolic of the Federation and Gene Roddenberry's idealistic optimism--space travel is, at the same time, so secure and so noble a pursuit that even non-commissioned individuals can participate. For the past two centuries, captains like Kirk and Archer were patrolling the frontier amid terrible danger, and the Enterprise-D was the fruit of their labor. While the Enterprise-E is a great ship, losing families meant losing a little bit of the optimism of Trek, as now there was a little bit more fear than there was before.

The ship was also one of the early ships to use muti vector shielding so each part of the ship had its own shield grid sections (warp necels, engineering top and bottom and saucer section top and bottom (I assume the bridge had its own extra shield grids) Voyager also had it as well but limited CGI for that show, limited everything to a bubble even if it had over 50 shield grids protecting parts of the ship individually (fully individually controllable) early enterprise E movies was still using bubble CGI later ones used the correct individual shield CGI grids Older ships even enterprise galaxy class only used only 4 shield grids sections,, witch was common in most ships for TNG time, but think that was more an CGI explanation of how there shields worked, as Discovery era ships and enterprise E had close to the Hull shields as CGI allowed this more realistic way for shields to function (as its a lot of power to project a shield far away from the ship)

It can also be argued that Starfleet went for bubble shields for a rather long time as it is simpler to make a single shield bubble evenly powerful. When this problem was solved / mitigated by what appears to be better capacitors and improved power relays, the hull-conformal shields made a return.

@@perryrhodan2037 it was purely a CGI issue in tng/ds9/voyager just didn't have the CPU power to render all the fancy stuff (in the older startrek movies they didn't even CGI the shields just hit the Hull but they did have shields) a bubble was easier to render, it takes more power to project a shield at a distance from the emitters so doesn't, make much sense to do it that way Discovery era ships all had close to Hull shields and sovereign class (after the first or second movie as the shield still used a bubble CGI) but all later ones used vector shields to show the individual area been individually protected as CGI was easy to do by then This also makes the issues with sheilds have to be down to transport reason, when they could just line up the ships transporter transceivers with a shield grid section and turn off a section to allow Transport (voyager did it with equinox when she was torturing/scarring one of the equinox crew on her ship when she took down a shield grid to allow the creatures to open up into the cargo bay)

Remember in the TNG Season 2 episode 'Q Who' where Q introduced the crew of the Enterprise D to the Borg in System J25 he did it to not only spite the Federation but to show them that they are not fully ready for what was out there as the Federation thought they could be ready for whatever they encountered out in space as Picard put it when he was talking with Q in 10 Forward and sadly it took the events of the Battle of Wolf 359 for the Federation to open their eyes and show them that they were not ready for what was out there and the first encounter with the Dominion really opened their eyes to reality and the dangers out there showing Starfleet had become complacent in the 75 years of peace they had and why they were forced to change their starship design philosophy with classes like: The Defiant Class The Sovereign Class The Akira Class The Saber Class The Steamrunner Class The Intrepid Class The Prometheus Class

Best I can come up with for the hatch room is that maybe it was designed as an upgrade slot where some externally-mounted machinery could plug in?

The sovereign-class Starship is the best Starship. Specifically built to take on the Borg but it also took on the scimitar which would have ended very quickly if the damn thing didn't fire wind cloaked.

How annoying must it have been to have the Enterprise-D crew _jump the queue_ and take the new Sovereign assigned to your command, because _they_ managed to lose a Galaxy class to a single obsolete Bird of Prey? Still it would have been awkward to have the Flagship of the fleet be a older Diplomatic Explorer that was outgunned by newer ships.

And yet, they could just have the computer beam them weapons while they got cute. Having physical ones accessible is wise, too.

Star fleet had no choice but to beef up its military and combat capacity They Had their back against the wall so to speak with the Borg and later the dominion after 60 to 70 years of relative peace and prosperity and pacifistic hubris following the kitomar accords of 2293 and the treaty of algoron of 2311 the same think happened in the mid 2250s with the first federation Klingon war between the late 22nd century following the formation of the federation in 2161 and the Start of the first federation Klingon war in 2256 during a time of relative peace and prosperity Star fleet let its combat readiness slip and prioritized expanding is exploration, scientific research and diplomatic capacity (Btw Star Trek fans need take a chip pill and stop this ridiculous complaining about a new spinoff show every time it comes out this happened in 1987 with the next generation with ds9 in 1993 with voyager in 1995 with enterprise in 2001 with discovery in 2017 and with Picard in 2020 I’m not sure if it happened with the animated series in 1974 or not or if it happened with lower decks in 2020 or not the point is Star Trek fans have always whine and moan about every spinoff show fans should take advice from MST3K it’s just a show I should really just relax)
