I feel like the movie didn't need the horror. The psychological terror of them going to die due to the error would have been enough for me. Maybe Ikarus I should have had the exact same Problem they had to make the deaths even more demoralizing

I think it is because they didn't want this movie to be too similiar to The Core

I agree. Bringing back Pinbaker itself was a good idea imo, because any more sudden technical failure of the ship would've been a clishé, but the way the filmmakers executed this third act was awful. Introducing a maniac fundamentalist to a crew consisting of a handful of scientists, sabotaging the second ship, killing crew members, while the oxigen is diminishing? Nice twist, such tension! But making the mad captain all blurry and act like a superhuman monster, trying to be terrifying like the nature of journey itself wasn't enough for this effect... it completely ripped me out of the flow. Liked the idea, hated the execution.

For me the best part was when a fifth member was announced, and Capa walks inside the sun viewing room and there actually was someone extra in the room, the few seconds of "WHO TF IS THAT"

On subsequent watches of Sunshine, I noticed that Icarus II's on-board psychiatrist is somewhat showing signs of obsession towards the sun, much like Pinbacker (and possibly his whole crew) Plus, in the beginning of the film, we're introduced to two crew members literally fighting, and how one said that he just sometimes couldn't cope with the isolation and time under mission. So I just thought that maybe, if they hadn't gone the detour, they would end up just like Icarus I. I dunno.

I remember the speculated reason for the sun losing luminosity was a brown dwarf collided with the sun and created an imbalance where part of the sun did not fuse it. The bomb was the jumpstart they simulated would reignite the sun to full luminosity.

How would that work though? The smallest brown dwarf we've found is 8 times the mass of Jupiter. Even its approach would have wreaked havoc on all the planets' orbits, let alone the small supernova emitted by its impact with the Sun. If this happened, Earth would be either ejected into interstellar space or vaporized into barely a cinder. Neither of which could have been fixed by a giant bomb

I can give them putting the docking port in the middle IF it had a door in the secondary heat shield that would be closed over that weak point after separation.
@JuliusGrande
@JuliusGrande 4 ай бұрын
I also wish the same for the communications towers. The secondary sunshield isn’t wide enough to adequately shield the towers. The builders should have designed the towers to retract during separation so that they would be protected, then they would extend again after the ship moves a certain distance away from the sun.

The big holes in the movie's realism and that the physics aren't as accurate as in Interstellar is clear. It's not a bad movie at all, and pretty much the most underrated movie I know. It's music is iconic, almost all the sacrifices / deaths are well written and make the viewer understand how important that mission is. The Icarus' design is genius and mostly realistic(the composition of the heatshield is seemingly out of a unknown material, since no metal or material can withstand the sun's heat at such a close range), with great details such as the wings on the second heat shield burning away. The writers made the protagonists obsessed by the sun and it's beauty. They made the humanity look small and vulnerable, pointing out the human misstakes which the crew makes as the movie continues. The human mind and it's irrational choices are our greatest blessing but still our greatest curse. A con is that many important scenes have a lot going on in the background. You will have to watch the movie 2-3 times to fully understand it. Sadly the movie loses it's edge if you watch it a second time. I rate the movie with a 8.5 out of 10

I know that the heat shields were made out of a golden reflective material. It doesn’t absorb the heat, but reflects it instead.

Besides the unnecessary horror element in the final 3rd of the film, I felt the biggest issue was there was a provision for the astronauts return at all. The planet was dying. They either succeeded in restarting the sun, and humanity survived, or they didn't and humanity would die. With that context in mind, I would think the mission would be have been one way and the crew would have all been professionals who volunteered to die saving the planet.

I'm writing a story called Sunshine 2 Flight of the Icarus 3. Original opening: "Our Sun is dying. Mankind faces extinction. 7 years ago, the Icarus project sent a mission to restart the Sun, but that mission was lost before it reached the star. 16 months ago, I, Robert Capa, and a crew of 7 left earth frozen in a solar winter. Our payload: a stellar bomb with a mass equivalent to Manhattan Island. Our purpose: to create a star within a star. 8 astronauts strapped to the back of a bomb. My bomb. Welcome to Icarus 2." My story opening: “Our Sun has been revived. Mankind has been saved. 2 years ago, the Icarus 2 successfully delivered its stellar bomb payload, even though the delivery cost the ship itself and the entire crew. 14 months ago, I, Julius Grande, and another crew of 7 left Earth now thawed from a solar winter. Our mission: study the Sun up close and land the first group of humans on Mercury. 8 astronauts strapped to the back of an artificial bomb. My artificial bomb. Welcome to Icarus 3.”
