The definitive vision of Director Robert Wise debuts exclusively on Paramount+ April 5, 2022. Film arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in September with extensive new bonus content.
Originally released in 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture became the fourth highest grossing movie of the year and earned three Academy Award® nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Music, Original Score. The film successfully launched the Star Trek franchise beyond the original television series, despite having been rushed to theaters with incomplete special effects and forced editing choices.
Featuring: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Majel Barrett, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, Persis Khambatta
Star Trek: The Motion Picture-The Director’s Edition Synopsis
The U.S.S. Enterprise boldly debuted on the big screen with the cast of the original Star Trek series, including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, and James Doohan. Meticulously restored and remastered, with enhanced visual effects and state-of-the-art sound, this definitive vision of director Robert Wise has been optimized for a new generation of fans. When an unidentified alien intruder destroys three powerful Klingon cruisers, Admiral James T. Kirk (Shatner) returns to the helm of a newly transformed U.S.S. Enterprise to take command and confront an alien spacecraft of enormous power heading toward Earth.
The Star Trek: The Motion Picture-The Director’s Edition 4K Ultra HD Disc and Digital releases will include HDR-10 and Dolby Vision,™ as well as Dolby Atmos®, accompanied by extensive new and legacy bonus content, which will be detailed at a later date.

I remember the thrill I felt seeing this in the theater back in 1979. It was the first new Trek I had seen and I loved the epic "sci-fi" story that brought my heroes back together aboard the Big E. I know some fans feel that the pacing is too slow and that too much time was spent on VFX shots but I respectfully disagree. It looked awesome on the big screen. @@SuperSnakePlissken It's like Star Trek decided to try a brief prog phase. I know it's a corny analogy, but this is Trek 'evolving, learning, searching' -- asking, "Is this all I am? Is there nothing more?". I think the path TMP started to tread, and the direction it was taking Trek, was a very interesting one. Although I can understand why it was abandoned at the time, in retrospect that they did so is a shame. And 'Final Frontier' is deeply flawed, but the flaws are mostly in execution. (Actually I have this suspicion that a lot of the criticism of Trek V is just fashionable Shatner-bashing.) You can't beat "What does God need with a starship?" and the strong emphasis on the Kirk-Spock-McCoy bond. Far more Trek and more Boldy Going than the absurdly-overrated 'Voyage Home'.

@@thefenlanddefencesystem5080 Star trek V was ruined by the studio. Shatner took a lot of heat for decisions the studio made. They ruined the film. I would say 98% of the problems in the script was the studio. That could have been one of the best trek films if they had backed off a bit.

What makes TMP still special is that it uniquely has more focus on the Enterprise itself as a visual character of a sort and how it traversed and explored the mystery and beauty of space which the original show had some aspects of. And the Enterprise as its refit had never looked better and as awe inspiring in the franchise. Sure, not as much the enterprise crew dynamics that turned to be the more major aspect of the show, but it didn't need to be a villain focused fight or chase formula yet either. The most "2001" like sci-fi of the trek films and the most like an epic movie. It was far more representative of the more introspective and strange episodes such as "The Changeling" and "The Immunity Syndrome" and "Where no man has gone before" and perhaps more of Roddenbery's style than the other tos writers. A shame the budgets were shafted for the rest of the classic crew sequel films.

I’m still annoyed about the lack of prologue on Star Trek IV’s Blu-ray and 4K. It was on the VHS and DVD, as a child it was the first TREK movie I ever saw on home video, the prologue provided a huge amount of story involving the Genesis project, Spocks sacrifice and the crew’s decision to steal the Enterprise and see if they could bring Spock back, that intrigued me and I sought out all of the previous films. Which were awesome. Then when I turned 16 Star Trek V was released. At the time I didn’t like it much, it was a let down after ‘The Voyage Home’……..but over the last 30 years I’ve come to appreciate it for what it is and I wouldn’t have it any other way. ‘The Undiscovered Country’ is fantastic.

Then with the motion picture they released the 2 disc directors edition and worked back up releasing 2 disc collector's editions of all the movies up to and including Nemesis. @@jimd385 the director's cut of the motion picture was only ever released in the gold box. The single disc bare bones version of khan was the theatrical. The 2 disc collector's edition was the director's cut, aka "the ABC television version". It included the extra few minutes of footage. There are several different versions of the undiscovered country. The single disc version is the "special longer version" exclusive to home video. The collector's edition 2 disc had a different version with flash cuts to the characters faces when valeris is naming them and the bluray is i believe as close to the theatrical version as you can get. The actual theatrical version of the motion picture wasn't released until after the bluray boxed sets came out. They released the theatrical dvds in pairs. The Motion Picture was the end of the Original Series era and the beginning of Star Trek's modern age. This was reflected in the design,exterior and interior,of the refit Enterprise,the increasing complexity of the stories leading to the serialization of the remainder of the TOS movies,starting with the Wrath of Khan and ending with the Undiscovered Country,a pattern that has carried through to the present day. This movie also exemplifies what Star Trek is all about--confronting the unknown in a peaceful manner that shows the best of humanity has to offer,and embracing an ever-changing galaxy without fear and hatred for the Other,seeing the universe with new eyes,seeking to understand the unknown. ✨

I don't know how anyone can watch this film and not mention the embarrassing clunky dialog, "Damn it Bones I need you...badly!" A few people in the audience started to laugh. The music was wonderful. I didn't know who Jerry Goldsmith was at that time. The visual effects were rushed and some of them look god awful on the big screen. The story itself I felt was disappointing. I left the theater feeling unsatisfied, deflated. Ten years of waiting and we had to endure Star Trek The Motion Picture. I know damn well I wasn't the only one who felt that way. Just some random thoughts from a then 20 yr. old Star Trek fan who was there on opening night at the North Point Plaza Theater in Baltimore.

I first saw this on TV when I was 8. The intrigue for me wasn't so much the sci-fi element but the investigative aspect of discovering who really is "V-Ger" and the philosophical exploration of what does it mean to live - or better yet, the difference between living as a living thing versus "being alive". Super interesting stuff. But the generation that got indoctrinated by JJ Abrams expect Star Trek to be like Star Wars in action minus the Star Wars lore. And incidentally, JJ Abrams was also instrumental in chopping down the Star Wars lore into a series with no meaning or rhyme, just going with the flow no matter the plot holes that keep springing up the further along they went.

@reidmason2551

The movie is not that "intellectual." Its premise is very simple and the movie doesn't present it in any complicated manner. What people reacted negatively to was the slow and prolonged establishment of who and what V'Ger was, the very '70s-era Starfleet costumes, the long spans of FX shots with not much going on but the crew looking confused, the lack of character interactions in the theatrical cut (all of the major emotional beats with Kirk and Spock were cut at the last minute)...people had and have legitimate gripes with the film that had nothing at all to do with a lack of action. Chuck Sonnenberg of SF Debris, who doesn't much like the film, made a very similar case in his own review. Don't misunderstand me. I very much like *Star Trek: The Motion Picture* in its director's and TV extended editions. But it is in no way any kind of intellectual statement too highbrow for mainstream audiences. It's one of the those movies you either go with or you don't, and those who don't like it have legitimate reasons for such.

@@viewtifuljoe66 The new visuals were only ones that were storyboarded but not finished because of Robert Able’s FX company wasting an entire year with nothing to show and no completed shots even surviving. Everything changed would have been that way without production issues and could have been accomplished using 1979 technology. This isn’t a Star Wars Special Edition where things were changed just to change them.
