In the very first episode of Star Trek ever produced, The Cage, we saw the crew of the Starship Enterprise beam down to a strange new world, and ever since, the transporter has been an essential component of Trek. Although not intended to be comprehensive, this video serves as representative sample of the transporter effect over the years.

Totally agree, they added this subtle distortion to the person beaming in and out that added a lot more physicality to the effect, like their molecules were really being pulled apart. Compared to the other effects, where it was just a basic cross-fade under some sparkles.

I agree too. Each show seemed like they were trying to advance the effect just a little bit more as technology improved, based on hypothetically what was happening. At least until the new shows where they seem to be more concerned with flashiness. The swirly effect in the Abrams movies is probably the worst.

I liked the transporter effect from The Cage the best. It was the first time we saw the transporter. The idea of these big powerful field generators holding every molecule in place, at the edge of this miraculous technology. It was complex, and it required the skills of a specialist, and two people to run the machinery for safety sake. This was a device that needed precision and respect. It was not a fax machine or email with human PDF file, this was something on the cutting edge, and a little scary.

I think the Beyond effect is a nice update/modernization of the classic TOS effect, it's faster and doesn't have the shrill sound effect a lot the TOS era effect suffer from. The DSC effect isn't a bad attempt at modernization of the TOS effect either. What I loved about the vid was that you could see the evolution of the "shower curtain" effect from early TNG to PIC as TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT and the TNG era movies all used the same basic effect, while the Picard effect seems like a variation/update of that effect.

The only correct (according to the ST Universe) representation of the Transporter was in TOS. Because, once you are bathed in the visible portion of the Transporter, you would no longer move around until Transport is COMPLETE - completely Complete. TOS does this. I love the sounds of the ST II and III transporters, especially hearing the system power up to operating power for transport in ST II. I’d have to say that for the look, my favorite Starfleet beams was the TNG during Best of Both Worlds p1&2, Barkley’s transport, ST First Contact/Insurrection, I like Nemesis, and I like Enterprise’s, and favorite looking Klingon transporter beam was Sorin and Geordi’s beam to the Bird of Prey in Generations. Wasn’t as fond of the Generations take on Starfleet’s, but it was ok. Definitely improved upon in First Contact and Insurrection. Definitely liked Nemesis’s Starfleet beam, and liked the Reman Scimitar’s transporters also, and their replicators. DS9 Cardassian and Romulan transporters looked good. I also like the take Strange New Worlds has on the Starfleet transporter beams. That gold really looks like it’s almost realistic. Not fond of the alternate timeline transporter beam that has spinning light. SNW has a great grasp on a gold transporter beam that best acts as the modern equivalent of the TOS transporter. Also liked the animated beams in ST Prodigy, they looked pretty cool too.

It really was fairly standardized between parts 2 and 6. Bright light in the middle splitting off into 2 horizontally separating bright lights. It was just blue for Federation and red or orange for Klingon. I suppose that one is my sentimental favorite. I'm guessing the kaleidoscope thing they had going on in part one was more expensive to do. Seeing as they only had to show it twice, and they were leaning heavy on the quality of the special effects as the movie's selling point (like they were trying to be 2001 or something), they had more of a "spare no expense" attitude about it.

@DayneTreader
@DayneTreader 2 жыл бұрын
Once you have a pattern of something in your system's memory, you can do whatever you want with it. I feel that it would be trivial to make a sitting person stand while in the buffer.
@leejerrett8268
@leejerrett8268 Жыл бұрын
I know Star Trek runs on the very softest of sci-fi; but now you got me thinking about what level of abstraction and compression the data in the pattern buffer would need to be capable of to be able to do something as simple as move someone into a standing position without incorrectly placing a muscle inside another or messing up the configuration of all the little actin proteins inside your muscle fibres. I expect that if the transporter just gave the nerve cells in your legs the action potentials that were recorded from your previous seated position you could wind up with a serious leg cramp, or at least a muscle spasm.

Thanks for watching. For a technobabble answer to your question, perhaps the distinctive transporter sound is a result of the resonance frequency of the Heisenberg compensators.
@OmegaReaver
@OmegaReaver 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDiMarco Close. Asked the transporter chief onboard my ship about it and this was her response: The sound we hear is the resonation of the annular confinement beam coupled with the materialization/dematerialization process (the object being transported _does_ displace air volume, after all). The difference in tones reflect the increasing sophistication in the beam generators. As the Heisenberg uncertainty compensators are essentially fuzzy logic collators designed to account for the possible locations of sub-atomic particles during beaming and are located within the transporter system itself, they wouldn't make a perceptible noise themselves unless something REALLY bad happened. Like, oh, what happened to Commander Sonak and Admiral Lori Ciana when they were attempting to board the newly refit USS _Enterprise_ .

@@JohnDiMarco That's a lame explanation. Because that means that the Phoenix warp signature shouldn't have been detected too.

@@ugochukwuanadyk6954 I assume Worf's comment means that the moon was in between the Enterprise and the Vulcan ship, while the Phoenix was "out in the open."

Worf stated that the moon obscured the Enterprise (from the moon being between the Enterprise and the Vulcan ship), which made sense given technology at the time.

Is it just me or does the effect in the Generations movie look bad even for the time. It has such sharp outer edges with no attempts to blend or feather. It actually looks like a boxed 2D effect lazily super imposed over the footage with out any dimensionality.

Discovery is my favourite. Yeah - their personal transporters were brilliant. I love love love that show. I'm old btw. Old enough to remember the very first episode. "The Cage". Still love Discovery more.

I Really hate the transporter effects in the new Discovery show. They just "blip" in and out existence. Literally a split second. It lacks any sense of "wonder" or amazement. They treat transporters just like opening a refrigerator door, or opening a cabinet.
@justindelima5607
@justindelima5607 2 жыл бұрын
I think the point is supposed to be that, by the 32nd century, the technology *is* as mundane as opening a cabinet. They've mastered it to the point where it's like a cellphone (something that would seem borderline magical a century ago) is to us these days. Don't get me wrong, Discovery has tons of flaws. That effect just seems like a logical progression of things so far in the future.
@DayneTreader
@DayneTreader 2 жыл бұрын
That's because transporters are a THOUSAND years old to humans in the 32nd century. You'd figure that they would have progressed to the point where its use would be so rapid that it would be almost instantaneous.
