I thought in a certain point of view A New Hope Mon Mothma was going to the emperor if the death Stars destruction did not succeed. A U wing is mentioned in From a Certain Point of View - A New Hope. Short story Grounded. Which takes place the same time as the Battle of yavin 4. That a U wing was in the temple hanger & being worked on/fixed.

Another note on Luke being able to fly the X-Wing: In the Princess, Farm Boy, and the Scoundrel novelization, there is a scene where Wedge takes Luke to a flight simulator they have on the base. While Luke doesn't last long at first, he gets encouragement from Wedge that most people don't do well at all their first time. Luke then went on to set the high score on the simulator after a few more tries.

I've always interpreted the slow pacing of Obi-Wan and Vader's final duel to be deliberate on both of their parts for different reasons. Yes, Obi-Wan is older now but we saw Count Dooku, who was in his 80s during the Clone Wars, pull off insane stunts so I believe Obi-Wan could have done the same but chose not to because he didn't know what Vader had learned since their last encounter. Same goes for Vader, he LOST both their previous duels, so he approached this final one cautiously because rushing at Kenobi didn't do him any favours before. I think that makes the most sense for him since we have seen repeatedly what he is capable of doing despite his armor.
@michaelramon2411
@michaelramon2411 4 ай бұрын
I think the Rebels episode "Twin Suns" is illustrative here. A Jedi Master of Ben Kenobi's skill can end even a competent opponent in a single blow if they get an opening. Vader absolutely does not want to give Obi-wan that shot. His statement "now I have become the master" could also indicate that he wants to demonstrate his growth since their last fight - exhibiting focus and precision in combat rather than the recklessness and rage that had undermined him before.

Of all of the justifications after the fact I really like yours the best because it speaks to the psychology of Darth Vader as well as Obi-Wan and doesn’t just rely on somebody being old. I also really like the idea of Obi-Wan sacrificing himself so he could escape
@Rockhound6165
@Rockhound6165 4 ай бұрын
Not to mention that an 800 year old Yoda can move like lightning. Fact is, the Obi-Wan/Darth Vader duel is supposed to be akin to a Samurai fight which is a lot more deliberate than the light saber duels we see in the later movies(just watch Kill Bill and the battle between Beatrix and O-Ren to know what I mean).

@Jack_Stafford

I think this is a fallacy, it wasn't slow pacing at all, you have to remember that lightsabers were completely new, no one had ever seen anything like it before, they were thought to be very dangerous and weapons you had to be very skilled and careful with, and I didn't find a pacing any slower than any other types of sword battles in fights that were common in the era. Just the fact that people were swinging around the laser swords by itself was enough action because once again, it was completely unique and novel. I just think modern audiences are so used to over the top CGI non-stop mayhem that a more careful battle between old friends that are now enemies with dialogue in between, and between two deliberate, older men , is lost on people with short attention spans and different expectations. It was more about the war of the mind, using the force, and careful deliberate tactics and strikes, not wildly flailing and swinging around like we saw Luke attempt in The Empire strikes back. Which is why he lost.

4:50 I think I was once told or read somewhere that it was common and known for people who wanted to join the rebellion to go to the Imperial Academy to receive military training, and then defect and escape to the rebellion.
@Jack_Stafford
@Jack_Stafford 3 ай бұрын
You're correct, and this was Canon before disney, this is how biggs dark lighter ended up in the rebellion. In the Canon Star Wars radio adaptation, the scene is expanded and includes the clips that were deleted from the original movie, where Biggs tells Luke that he AND others at the imperial academy see what the Empire is doing and to fight for what they believe in that they planned to abandon ship and join the rebellion which is why we see him later in the briefing room and how he ended up there, when earlier in the movie Luke referenced joining the academy like his friends, it explains why would he join the imperial academy if his best friend was a rebel... Which he knew table, the scene with big is telling him he was going to defect to the rebellion happened earlier and speaks to Luke wanting to fight for the right side even before he ended up with Obi-Wan. So much is explained in that radio adaptation that is questioned here, like how late it was followed through hyperspace, it's because of spy on board had a tracking beacon and that's why she couldn't trust anyone that R2-D2 who was programmed to only obey her and that's why he threw out the movie disobeyed Luke and many others. And once again this was Canon, produced by lucasfilm, even starred Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels with all official Star Wars and sound effects it just makes the original Star Wars movie into a 6-hour story that explains a lot and has things included like Leia's torture which is absolutely blood-curdling, and why she was suspected by Darth Vader of being involved in Rebel activities. Everyone should watch it it is on KZfaq.

Slow light saber battle? Gotcha covered here. Force users can see into the future. The farther they look, the more variables can come into play, and potential futures come to pass. But a few seconds into the future? Total clarity. That's why they make good pilots at high speeds and why they can fly ships they've never been in before. They can see the outcomes of all decisions.... so the light saber battle is like a game of chess, played mentally, seeing the future and responding to what each side might choose to do and countering it.

27:42 I figured the medals were for rescuing Leia, something arguably more daring, and that none of the characters had any obligation to do. well it was LUKE that suggested the "reward, being more wealth than Han could imagine" (and Han could imagine quite a bit). But Leia is begrudging in that respect " if money is all that you love, then that's what you will receive". Also the original plan was simply to deliver Artoo to Leia's father (Bail Organa) on Alderaan. Not rescue her from the Death Star. Well they delivered Artoo to Leia's father (Vader) alright.....yet the Imperials didn't have a clue - that was THE Artoo unit they've been looking for all along not "An" Artoo Unit. Maybe Kenobi's mind trick was not simply a momentary memory lapse, but long lasting.

You gotta admit Greedo had it coming. Greedo was an immediate threat to Han's life. It's not as if Han hunted Greedo down. Han shot Greedo in self defence. I wouldn't call that 'in cold blood.' As for Han's character arc - yes he was a killer, but he always had a heart. There was always "good in him." Even when we first met the character at Mos Eisley he wouldn't have shot an innocent person who didn't pose a threat, but boy would he have not hesitated to shoot in self defence!

It was a mandate by Fox at the time since they were producing it. They didn't have much faith in the movie so they didn't meddle with it much, but they did insist that having, "Episode IV: A New Hope," at the beginning of the crawl was going to confuse audiences despite that kind of being one of Lucas' goals with emulating the old weekly serials of Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers where you would just be thrust in the middle of a story that had begun at the theater some weeks back and you missed a few chapters. Because Fox didn't have much faith in Star Wars, they allowed Lucas to have the freedom to produce any sequels himself purely through Lucasfilm, and that's why The Empire Strikes Back has Episode V. In 1981, there was a re-release of A New Hope that was then allowed to include the Episode Number and Title. As an added bonus fact: Despite having no "creative" input (financial backing) in the other Star Wars movies, Lucas always returned to Fox for distribution with Star Wars. After Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, Disney was still obligated to include the Fox logo at the start of A New Hope, even having to get a license from Fox to distribute A New Hope blu-rays produced in 2015, but not the others. However, after Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019, at least on Disney+, the Fox logo has been restored to all 6 of Lucas' movies, and I have to imagine that's the case for any other physical releases since, although I can't be certain.

@@MCLegoboy I don't believe Fox had anything to do with it. Although Lucas always planned for the movie to have started in the middle of a larger story, none of his drafts used Episode IV or A New Hope in their titles or in the opening crawl. (The third draft used the title 'The Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Starkiller', which informed the title of the novelization of the first film: "Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker".) This is something Lucas conceived while working on 'The Empire Strikes Back'. The title wasn't added to the crawl of 'Star Wars' until 1981, after 'Empire' had come out, to bring it in line. In fact, in '76 and '77, the first film was actually Episode VI in Lucas' original 12-film plan/outline, which he noted on paper in 1978. This changes to a 9-film plan during production and post on 'Empire', so they identified that film as Episode V and 'Star Wars' retroactively to Episode IV. Fox still owned 'Star Wars' and the distribution rights to the other five films until the Disney purchase, which is why they had to get a distribution license from Fox for the Blu-ray releases of those six films. That's why the logo and fanfare still appeared on those. They stay on now out of tradition. Same with Indy. Paramount still owns the first four Indiana Jones movies, so Disney has to license them from Paramount. (They also cut Paramount in on any money from new Indiana Jones movies, like 'Dial of Destiny'.)

Dave Prowse is an unreliable narrator. They got really fed up of him breaking the prop lightsabres (which were just sticks) because he swung too hard. In Empire they got so fed up with him in the fight with Luke that legendary swordmaster Bob Anderson played Vader instead of just choreographing. There are pictures across the web which show Anderson in the suit but no Vader helmet. It worked because although Anderson was a little bit shorter, he could fight with lifts in the boots that made him the right height to play Vader.

I always figured that the "fight" between Vader and obi wan in a new hope went so slow was because of 2 conditions. Obi wan's age and mutual respect. They both knew how the fight would end but obi wan knew he could sacrifice himself for the mission. Vader already had a tracker in the millennium falcon anyways... Plus he wanted to have that conversation and encounter last, so he took his time before actually trying to put any power behind his strikes.

This video made me realize how silly people are when they complain about Disney "breaking established lore" with the hyperspace ramming or people surviving lightsaber stabs. The prequels created 40 plot holes in this movie alone that were retroactively given excuses in books to make it fit the canon decades after it came out lmao. If you can accept the "hyperspace oil trail" left by the Tantive IV, you can accept the "rare experimental shields made it possible" excuse for the Holdo Maneuver that was explained in the Last Jedi's novelization

So much of the disney hate is so stupid and irrational. "Disney doesn't respect the established lore and canon!" So, we're just going to pretend the prequel trilogy didn't recon tons of stuff from the OG triliogy and change what the established lore was up until that point? "Disney doesn't understand Star Wars!" So, we're just going to pretend dave filoni doesn't still work there? "Disney doesn't understand lightsabers!" So, we're just going to pretend Maul didn't get cut in half and survive? "Disney is killing Star Wars!" So, we're gonna pretend that Andor, Mando, Rebels, Rogue One and Kenobi don't exist? That The Holiday Special, the feature length Ewok movies, the animated clone wars movie, the first 4 seasons of clone wars are good? And that the prequel trilogy wasn't met with huge disappointment from the audience? The mental gymnastics it takes must be exhausting

I liked my own explanation for not firing on the escape pod. Right before they get on, C3PO tells R2 that he's not permitted in there and it is restricted. Droids would have probably had programming that kept them from using the pods or to think they would be deactivated trying to do so. The commander would have known this as well as this would be standard programming throughout the universe, (why would droids recieve priority over living beings?) and since there were no life readings, it would make more sense that the pod malfunctioned rather than droids being onboard.

At the risk of causing a fight, it's always interesting which unanswered questions people get angry about. The ultimate example of this for me is the bombs in The Last Jedi. I actually have a different answer for why Leia spoke with an English accent sometimes and not others. Padme had done exactly the same thing. Padme in her role of Queen of Naboo would switch accents for various reasons. As Queen, it was important to sound formal, regal, and official in her role. When in duress or around people she felt she could trust or in disguise, the accent was no longer present. Leia followed the same mindset. If she was under duress, the accent faded or went away. While she felt she was acting as Princess of Alderaan, she kept up the accent.

A much better answer for how princess Leia was followed through hyperspace is that someone installed a *tracking* device, and this was official Canon until disney. The Star Wars radio adaptation was fully supported by lucasfilm and starred Mark Hamill Anthony Daniels and basically turned the first Star Wars movie into a 6-hour fleshed out story that included many things dropped from the movie like stories of Luke and Biggs on tatooine. Also some details about why princess Leia was under suspicion for her previous actions on alderaan and other missions to areas suspected of Rebel activity. But how princess Leia's ship was followed was, a spy on board had smuggled on a homing beacon, and this is one of the reasons that Captain Antilles told her that no one on the ship could be trusted and programmed R2-D2 to take the plans for her. This explains why she trusted a robot over one of her bodyguards or soldiers and also how she was followed through hyperspace. That radio adaptation is brilliant, it's on youtube, every Star for Star Wars fan should listen to it it provides so much more depth to the characters, since it was produced by lucasfilm it has all of the real music sound effects and additional ones from their catalog that eventually made their way into the other movies. And some truly incredible scenes, Darth Vader's torture of princess Leia is absolutely blood curdling, with Brock Peters as the voice of Darth Vader , that series is brilliant.

This implies that the academy Luke is talking about joining isn't specifically a Imperial academy but maybe a sector defense fleet academy. Han also talks about "Outrunning Imperial ships not just local cruisers but Correlian ships" Both of these imply that there is a local and a imperial fleet at the time of a new hope and that the academy Luke wanted to go to was said local fleet academy not the imperial one, although the Empire was it would seem, consolidating all the fleets under their control.

True BTS stuff: 1- the X wing R&D was based on funny cars, drag racers 🏁 this look was meant to impress George Lucas, appeal to him; which it did! 2- Luke since he was new, no combat flying was going to fly a "high tech" Y wing bomber in the mission. The set, art dept could not get a full Y wing ready for scenes so changes, dialog was redone to have Luke & R2 use a X Wing craft. 3- Star Wars, 1977 "Rebels" used stolen, custom, outlawed ships, weapons, parts, gear. Rebel spys, engineers, supply crews tinkered with ships, old weapons to use in combat. This often gave them a advantage against TIEs ATATs storm troopers etc.
