Great vid thanks. As a reader of all Star Wars for 30 years, the schism between canon and legends fans is sad. Great stories all around. The same way I can watch 2 tv shows at once, or watch marvel and dc at the movies…I can read 2 slightly separate star wars in my head. The modern star wars comics and manga from high republic are the best star wars stories i’ve ever read. While the current prose novels are not my favorite, i will always read everything from this world that means so much to me. Thank you for continuing to promote reading all star wars in an inclusive way. I want more people to read about darth vader and doctor aphra and the tragedy of Edge of Balance…and i want people to hear the tales of zenoma sekot and the yuuzhan vong, the fall of jacen solo as well.

I like and dislike things from both. Sadly my least favorite thing (Palpatine clones) which I celebrated being abolished, made a comeback in canon and exists in both now. RoS really messed up more than TLJ imo.

Definitely an understandable frustration. It is difficult when they just keep bringing back characters as clones. Can be a cheap move.

I know these Pros and Cons videos are only about the books, but I still have to bring up the games. Legends just has more games, and the big story games like KOTOR and the Jedi Knight games also influenced the books and comics which makes the universe feel even more interconnected. In my opinion Legends also has better short stories than Canon. But I think the Canon will probably also get big story games and more short stories, so who knows, in ten years I will be saying the good things I say about Legends about the Canon as well.

Con 4. Both continuities have their die hard fans. Being a SW fan, you need to embrace a broader view of SW and not the dogmatic view of either Canon or Legends. The EU was around for 30+ years. I can't imagine ignoring decades of SW history. Anything done in one continuity was bad in the other continuity. Or will bend over backwards to defend everything bad from their favored continuity.
@jonathankoan
@jonathankoan 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I definitely think the EU has louder/stronger fans, but that’s as you said been around for a while. I definitely have things in each continuity that I prefer over the other one, but neither stands out as the definitive one well over the other. That might be because I didn’t start either continuity until 2015, and thus don’t have the attachment. Still, I’m glad that the people supporting my channel have been very respectful of both continuities.

one reason people are exclusive on legends is the way they feel they were treated. Basically you've spent years, decades and then one company with no regard said, what you read? didn't matter, didn't exist. That would upset me. BTW, do you think Phasma is horror? I love horror :D please advise me some eheh

Yes, after so many years invested in the story and the characters, there's a sense of... betrayal may be too harsh a word, but certainly a slap in the face. The thing is, I was 100% cool with resetting the continuity to free authors to tell new stories, but authors have been, instead, shackled by the new movies and shows. Ultimately, my biggest gripe is the discarding of the characters. I miss them. I hoped we'd see more Thrawn treatments, but they've largely just been...snap...dusted. For me, I'm still in mourning.

The most interesting thing is 1 of the books heir to the Jedi was originally intended to be a legends novel so technically actually fits in both continuities it was just rebranded as Canon at the last minute when the continuity was reboot.

Really nice how reasonable and open minded you are about this. I’m a very new legends fan who really came to love it after I watched Episode 8. It made me realise Star Wars was more than just the Skywalker movies and in a way it’s freed me to enjoy so much more. I’ve become a KOTOR fan, rediscovered my love for The Force Unleashed series and reading Heir to the Empire trilogy right now. I’ve also loved TCW, Rebels more so. (Ezra is a fantastic Luke analogue.) And I like certain aspects of canon over Legends, especially in regards to the clone troopers. Overall, I’ve been able to love Star Wars far more in the last year and a half than I ever have growing up.

I agree with a lot of your points here. I’ve read far less canon compared to Legends, as I don’t find it as interesting personally, but I do still read some on occasion Canon is definitely is easier to jump into. With Legends, there are so many series I want to read, but I can’t because I haven’t finished the ones that take place prior and I don’t want to spoil myself. On the other hand, I can walk into a bookstore and pick up any canon book I feel like grabbing, and be able to just read it. I really, really like that about the canon A lot of my issues with the canon, which I feel were better done in Legends, are actually being fixed by High Republic. I loved the interconnectedness of Legends, and the large scale storytelling-both of which have been lacking in canon. But High Republic is bringing a lot of that back and I think that’s great. It’s one reason it’s my favorite thing to come out of the Disney era, and it’s easily the most Legends-like stuff as well imo

You expressed what I experienced when I was first excited for new cannon SW books. I was hyped for this fresh new, clean slayed of new canon interconnectivity between books and movies starting with aftermath. After that I was left kinda disappointed about the lack connectivity. Comic books on the other hand have nailed it though 👌🤌🏽

I’m mostly strictly just a Eu fan but there are some parts of canon that I love such as the master and apprentice book and Dooku jedi lost. Of course outside of the books I love the 2017 Vader comics and the 2008 clone wars series (even tho I have major issues with their continuity)

These pros and cons used to be limited to the books, so the majority of fans could just stick to the movies and TV shows to avoid those cons. But now the TV shows are falling into the same traps, like the character driven shows over story driven which I absolutely hateee, I don't like a series or movie being named after a character because that series is now obligated to sticking to that character otherwise if it tries to do something else, maybe something more interesting with a different character, people will wonder why it's following someone else instead of the title character. Another con is the interconnectivity, the shows are becoming unnecessarily interconnected in my opinion, it's at the point where characters from every show are making cameos from show to show like Mando and Grogu in Boba Fett, so now Mando fans have to watch Boba fett to understand season 3 of Mando. I just find it unfortunate that the shows are falling into the same cons that both Canon and legends books sometimes fell into

It’s understandable. I certainly enjoy both, but I started both at the same time, so didn’t have it one way or the other. I think that over time, it’ll get easier, once things have cooled down more. 2014-2019 it was pretty controversial, but it seems that fans have opened more to both. It’s like the Road to El Dorado Meme for me “Both is good”. Glad you like Legends though, there are some really excellent books there.

Excellent take. I agree with all of your pros and most of your cons. I 100% agree with you on the Padme books. I could never enjoy them and I’ve never been able to explain what about it didn’t work for me, until just now when you laid it out. I can’t get into her writing because she writes in a way that her readers aren’t allowed to disagree with her characters- good and evil are very white and black, so there is no room for moral discussion. Im going to have to respectfully disagree with you on the character driven books being a con, but as you said this is just personal preference. I am definitely a character driven reader and so I LOVE the character driven novels. I also enjoy a good plot driven novel, but personally character development is more important to me than an intricate plot. I think that’s why I enjoy anything by Zahn. He excels at writing action pact books that also have amazing character development!

And didn't know that Phasma is what you said, now i need it😲 Con 1 for me is pro because i prefer character focused books. There are too much BIG things in movies and sometimes characters do not have enough time to show themselves
@jonathankoan
@jonathankoan 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point, and that’s why some people prefer Canon. My issue is sometimes it feels like they’re saving the big stuff for the big screen, and they give the scraps to the books. My personal philosophy is that I’d be happy if we never got more movies/tv and instead put the entire focus on the books, because I am a bookworm and want everything in books. But that’ll never happen again, and the shows and movies have been really fun to watch. I’m just glad we have the variety now of both types of stories in the canon, so most audiences will be satisfied.
@ost6985
@ost6985 2 жыл бұрын
I think they are actually 'saving big stuff' because movies make more money. Also it's easy to get one big mess if books go too massive. They couldn't even handle Ahsoka's story and put it together, imagine how this will go with Yuuzhan Vong War-sized plot

What did you mean regarding the legends tier system? Were some legends books considered "more canon" than others at the time?
@jonathankoan
@jonathankoan Жыл бұрын
Yes. I don’t know the specific format, but there were basic tiers where certain mediums and certain aspects of that medium were more a part of the continuity that the others. They’ve kind of utilized a similar policy recently, but not quite as much. It was quite confusing from what I remember.

Question, as someone who reads the legends books, what books would you recommend for cannon? Please keep me away from books after return of the jedi. Just cuz the sequels were horribly done
@jonathankoan
@jonathankoan Жыл бұрын
So The Thrawn books (Thrawn, Thrawn Alliances, and Thrawn Treason) are good reads, the Thrawn Ascendancy is great. Master and Apprentice, Lords of the Sith and Dark Disciple are good Jedi/Sith books. A New Dawn is the perfect tie-in for Rebels. If you like military stories Battlefront 2: Inferno Squad is great. Catalyst made Rogue One a much more impactful movie and actually is a fantastic example of how to write a unique but fitting tie-in novel. The High Republic has been entertaining, but it’s complicated to get through and not the best starting place, but worth while eventually. I know you aren’t a sequels fan, but there are some Post-ROTJ books that are pretty good just as Star Wars novels. The Princess and the Scoundrel is a good romantic type book like “Courtship of Princess Leia”. Phasma and Blackspire is a good duology. There’s a lot of sequel tie-ins, but if you want an entertaining and visceral story they work well. That’s about what I’d recommend for you if you want to get into the canon. There’s a lot I didn’t cover, but that’s the best list of starting places.

Okay, after your summary, PHASMA will be my next Star Wars novel ;-) … I think, we should mention the elephant in the room … people are selfish, ignorant and tend to feel a certain entitlement when it comes to big franchises like STAR WARS. Many of them grew up with one the first two trilogys and have certain expections about how the stories should progress. And since STAR WARS has to please fans between 5 and 105, you have to make some decisions along the way that will inevitably throw off some fans here and there. And there are also some people that have forgotten what all of this … cinema, TV, books, fantasy and STAR WARS … was about: FUN! You should have fun with those stories. It's just fairytales, in space. A great way to escape your daily life, your problems and so on. It's entertainment, not a religion. If you didn't like one book (KENOBI for instance … ;-)) well, head on to the next one. Disney or Lucasarts don't owe you a certain story. And it's not the end of the world. There's plenty of other stuff to explore. … By the way, I couldn't care less about the colors of he laser swords … if it matches the surroundings and the fight looks cool, I'm happy with any color … but that's just me. I understand that there is a whole mythology behind that …

Right? I’m just happy to get more books either way. Lots of great books in both continuities. Also several duds as well. Regarding the lightsaber issue, I should clarify something. It’s more of a historiography thing. I view the people who oversee the canon books/comics/shows/etc (Lucasfilm Story Group and the editors) as omniscient historians who don’t just watch the history happen but guide it to make it work, and when they slip up and make contradictions it is frustrating. It makes it seem like they don’t care about matching things up enough. But it’s a minuscule complaint if the stories are entertaining (which they have been).

@@jonathankoan The only contradictions I see are the ones that go against canon via TV or movie which are few and far between. The 1 that really stands out is in the book Enterprise:The First Adventure Pike is promoted to Commodore where as in the episode "The Menagerie" hes a Fleet Captain.
