I’ve muddled around in reading a few Star Wars books here and there over the years (Bane trilogy, Plagueis, Kenobi) because as you said it’s a bit daunting to figure out where to start. A couple months ago I decided to do some research on where to dive in on the New Republic timeline to ultimately get me to the NJO. I stumbled upon your channel while researching everything EU and I’ve really enjoyed all your Star Wars videos! Ive finished the Thrawn trilogy and the first three X wing books so far, it’s felt like re-experiencing watching the original trilogy for me all over again and I’m having a blast. Keep up the good work Jonathan!

I agree with your cons, especially with where to start. Thankfully my husband started reading Star Wars about 15+ years ago so he's guided me along to what books I should read and in the best (in his opinion) order. But definitely it can feel overwhelming when you look at all the books in the EU

It’s certainly overwhelming, but it also has so much payoff with the long stories. Lots of good and bad with the various continuities.

your 2nd pro is why I'm really enjoying the high republic. It's like the sat down and went right, heres the great disaster, here's everything we can write about after it. I think it also helps all the stories are on tight release schedules and are always importent to the series. it's easy to keep track of, and easy for the authors to keep their stories withing the established timeline

Completely agree! Heir to the Empire remains near and dear to my heart, and through genuine merit and nostalgia is my fallback example of a perfect Star Wars book. It’s always top of my list when someone asks curiously about what Star Wars book would be good check out. But I just finished Brotherhood the other day and was blown away! I would hate any version of myself that denied me this amazing book out of spite 😅 It is now also at the top of my list for recommendations.

I have bought the canon books. Usually the ones like after the OT. The thing is because I didn't care for the sequel trilogy, that severely limits my desire to read a book to deeply connected to it. That's just how I feel. I did read that one book with Luke and Lando, but I found it hard to get through honestly. Took me forever.

The best books in the canon have generally been the prequel era (Master and Apprentice, Brotherhood) and the in-between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope era (Catalyst, A New Dawn, Thrawn). Some of the sequel era has been good (Bloodline and Phasma and Blackspire), but it is the weakest developed thus far.

This was a cool video Jonathan! I’m hoping to read Heir to Empire and Thrawn eventually. It’s very daunting to even think about getting into the EU lol.

The EU had 35,000+ years of stories, which, made it that much better imo. So many characters, planets, ships, groups, wars, genres, etc. The continuity wasn't perfect, but when it was great, it was phenomenal. Stuff that happened in the 70's/80's/early 90's were relevant in the 2000's/2010's. What other series has that? Do not read Darth Plagueis first. Read the other PT era books and comics, and the Darth Bane books, first. I love how long the NJO series, but good lord, LOTF and FOTJ were messed up. LOTF had plot lines that dragged over multiple books. FOTJ had so many different plotlines. No sense of identity. Fans do hold it to a high pedestal. You aren't wrong.

Hi, Jonathan. I have been reading Star Wars for a long time. I own over 60 SW books and have read many more. For a while, in my 20s, I had no money and used the library. My experience has been marvelous with both EU and Canon. But I keep coming back to the EU. Even though I completely agree with your 3 cons!

I'm hoping that someday they'll eventually continue the Star Wars legends books alongside the Canon books.
@jonathankoan
@jonathankoan 2 жыл бұрын
It’s certainly possible, but not probable for the foreseeable future. The Canon is a good moneymaker now and they’re pretty busy with it, so I think it’ll be 5-10 years before we get more Legends novels.

I think for me the lows of legends are much lower than the lows of canon, but, the highs are way higher!

I think I mostly agree. The Canon hasn’t had quite the time to achieve either yet, but that statement mostly rings true for me.

Hard to tell what era i like more. I'm not really into the original trio (aka Han, Luke, Leia) so EU doesn't work for me every time. But there are such masterpieces that i enjoy much more then canon books. Just finished Outbound Flight and it was sooo entertaining. Also i think canon is a bit lack of different jenres (Joe Schreiber's horrors im looking at you) Btw what about making a video with top of underrated SW books in your opinion? It could be interesting

I agree with everything you’ve said. I was very disappointed by the X-Wing series due to the high pedestal they were placed on despite a Mary Sue mc. I still enjoyed it, but my enjoyment was hampered due to the hype surrounding the series. And I am really worried I won’t like the Thrawn Trilogy.
@jonathankoan

I personally love all the Thrawn books we’ve gotten, but the OG Thrawn trilogy definitely has an old, nostalgia feeling. I like it, but you might not. I hope you still give it a chance.

I think its a bit unfair about the staunch legends only. Amd i think your recent philosophy on reviews i addressed this. Maybe someday ill read canon but i have a heavy bias against it and i know that. I dont wamt to read a book and then review it negatively when someone might love it. Now again i go in hoping to like every book i read but with canon i inow there's a bias and that will taint my opinion. I dont want to ruin peoples happiness by trampling on what they love. So i stick to the eu and read many ither types of stories outside of star wars so i dont only read star wars. Canon may be a possibility somwday when ive read basically everything else i want to read and i have a big list. Especially since Supernatural encounters established that both canon and legends do exist in tandum in universe. But i would never discourage someone from reading canon. But ultimately its a universe thst leads to the sequel trilogy. No mattwr what victories or excellent stories are told its connected to a world which endpoint is the sequels whoch I personally dont like. So for now i will remain a legend only sort. But to anyone who wishes to read canon stuff all the power to them
@jonathankoan

Your points are very well reasoned. I understand being apprehensive about it, and if you didn’t enjoy the sequel trilogy I understand that as well. I would argue that with the excellent stories in the novels that rather than dislike them because they lead to the sequel trilogy, the novels are great and will rather make you either enjoy the sequels more or at least enjoy the canon books more. And not all of the canon books are written with the specific intent of leading to the sequels, as quite a few are really focused in other areas of the timeline.

At the time I wasn’t actually referring to him, but since then I have see a lot of his channel. But I would hope that good stories would win over anyone because they’re good stories. That’s my only allegiance when it comes to Star Wars Books.
