The sad fact is that, while you can name a hundred wonderful Star Wars stories that released after 1983, this franchise has been living off of the sheer wonder of 10-year-old boys from 1977 for almost half a century. When they’re gone, and their children are old and don’t care anymore, Star Wars will fade faster than it has over the past decade. You can’t go home again.

The problem with Disney SW is not the influence of women, or a desire to appeal to women. The problem is the MISANDRY. SW is big enough for everyone but Disney Lucasfilm wants to insult and exclude one specific demographic.
@peteg475
@peteg475 Ай бұрын
Misandry is unavoidable considering the worldview of the women they have to chosen to hire and influence this brand. I can imagine some women who look at a story about communist space lesbians and think it's eye-rolling and ridiculous. But those are the kind of women who don't work at Lucasfilm.

@@peteg475 Yes, Kennedy has filled the company with misandrists over the last decade. But women who aren’t misandrists have been contributing to SW since the OG film. To bring back a bigger audience, new “Star Wars’” stories need more good-looking guys who are leaders: most women want a handsome, heroic guy they can dreamily watch (a la Ford’s Han Solo), and most guys want to positively emulate a dashing but moralistic up-and-comer with destiny on his side (al la Luke Skywalker).

I really wish they had just hired great writers and people who are passionate about Star Wars (marvel, Indiana jones, etc), and let them make content for the existing audience. Done well, those franchises are guaranteed money-makers. If Disney wants to take their 4x or 8x profit and invest it in some new IP that’s specifically catered to this imaginary audience, I’m totally for it. Spend that money! I just don’t understand why they felt like they needed to poison these beloved franchises to do it. If they’re certain that there’s an unserved audience for Star Wars, why not make a new franchise that’s extremely similar but still distinct so that they can manage their risk? if the audience goes crazy for the new series, they could always combine it with Star Wars later or it could usurp Star Wars if it was really the next cultural phenomenon…
@gsleo2396
@gsleo2396 Ай бұрын
Ideally, it should appeal to kids and teenagers aswell, if a franchise is specifically for an older audience then it has an expiration date, a franchise should try to capture younger generations as the years go by, which Lucas succeeded at with the prequels, just like the originals appealed to kids in the 70s and 80’s, the prequels despite all their flaws managed to appeal to kids in the 2000s, the problem is that disney has become incapable of making stuff that appeals to kids, star wars or otherwise.

SW is a boy brand... adults and females can enjoy that, but it was not intended for them. I love the six films by Lucas and all the media that supports and enhances his movies. I'm not big on toys; I collect all things Vader/ Anakin & Sith, love Luke & Qui_Gon, read books and comics, buy the soundtracks. I don't cosplay. That's what a young chicky does for attention, and at 46 I'm too old and don't want attention. I grew up watching and loving cartoons like He-man, GI Joe, Thundercats, Voltron & Transformers. I loved Kung Fu/ karate movies, monsters, action, space-opera, sci-fi and horror films. I was a huge wrestling fan and will be a NY Yankee baseball fan (and for a long time loved watching basketball, hockey and football). Regarding books, I love pulps, detective, action & westerns. To me, the only female directors who understand men and can tell their stories believably are Penelope Spheeris & Kathryn Bigelow. I am a Robert Howard fanatic, and I prefer the brutal tales of Solomon Kane & Conan to the (BORING) Lord of the Rings. I only enjoy Science Fiction books from the late 1800s to when cyberpunk began. As far as fantasy, well, I love John Norman's Gor series. Mercedes Lackey, Ursala Leguin & Margaret Atwood blow! My favorite TV drama ever is The Shield. But... I am an outlier. I like certain masculine-centered media because it is masculine. I also read romance novels from the late 1800s to about 15 years ago. I can't stand the genre as it is today. It has been taken over by SJW females who want to rewrite history and malign old-school romances of the 70s and 80s as anti-feminist... Despite those books being very much a product of the second wave of feminism. But again, I am an outlier. I do not conform to 60 to 75% of females who act as one hive mind/ blob. Those types of women would label me as having internalized misogyny or being a "pick me," but that's projection. Unlike the blob, I'm comfortable with my biology and hate stupid conformity for conformity's sake. But yes, say it again: Star Wars is a boy brand. It should have stayed that way, but the blob wants to destroy everything in its path.

I know why Agent Carter was popular with women. Because in addition to being a "strong female character", she's an unashamedly _feminine_ character in a glamorous age, a love interest, and played by a bonny and blithe actress who you could see yourself being friends with. And what did Disney do with the actress and character? Shelved them, except for a few risible cameos girlbossing in place of existing male character. They hate men, but they want their women to act _like_ men.

Disney should just sell Marvel and Lucasfilm while they still have some decent monetary values because no matter how many times they try to turn these two IPs female focused, they still attract more men than women which to Disney is problematic. After selling these brands, Disney will have extra cash to create what they really want: lesbian love stories and similar types of things.

I do mind that Marvel superheroes have been reduced to objects of desire for the modern female. I'm pretty sure that's not what they were originally meant to be. It's like if they made a Barbie movie where Barbie needs to win a "miss wet t-shirt" contest, and Ken is one of the judges.

Percentages mean nothing without the high foot traffic. 75% of 20 people is 15 people. Having a 40% female attendee rate means nothing if only 10,000 people attend a $180 million dollar movie.

Women tend to be attracted tor name brands, eg. handbags and fashion. They will follow the label at top dollar over the same bag from Walmart. Kennedy thought men thought the same way as women and we would blindly consume anything with the Star Wars lable

So common business sense is that you’d want to capture more of the female audience. Which is what we’re seeing. Disney seems to be failing at that though. But it’s hardly counterintuitive that they’re trying. Add to that the fact that us older male SW fans haven’t really liked anything out it after 1983. We are a lost cause… Sure I’ll try to get my kids to watch the OT. But I won’t allow them to watch the prequels in my watch. I wish I had never seen those myself.

Wrong about fashion designers. Some of the best designers for women are men eg. Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, Michael Korrs - the list goes on. Men have a unique perspective on what they want to see on women. However, I think this is not about gender at all, this is a question of talent and in Acolyte's case there is a complete dark empty void of talent sitting in the writing room and at Disney.

Their answer usually boils down to the coping mechanism of "most of the hate is from ignorant fans." Ok. Whatever you gotta tell yourself to feel better.

With $350 million, which is the ludicrous amount of money Disney blows on one movie these days, Disney should be able to make two movies, one for boys and one for girls. It would be much more fruitful than trying to make one movie that appeals to everyone

Disney has filled its ranks of entertainment with activists. Activists DO NOT CARE about revenue, they care about the NARRATIVE and REVOLUTION. This means they don’t care about the audience they have, they would rather have the audience they want. Additionally they have proven that in regard to the investors they can always lie about returning to normalcy and the investors that should care about revenue will always believe the lie. The second investors walk away and let Disney fail maybe things will change, but I have little hope. The activists will burn it to the ground before surrendering it.
