There's several in BSG (the reimagine series anyway) because it is based a bit more on science). However, it is popping up more and more in Star Wars, least the animation side - I know Hera in Rebels against a TIE Defender actually cuts engines and only has momentum carrying her as she points back to where it's circled around a Star Destroyer to blast it out of the air. I think they've caught on that besides being accurate it can look cool and all, plus it's easier with CG.

Just think of the "sound in space" problem the way you think of a dialogue scene in a non sci-fi movie where there's a longshot of two people from a distance, but you still hear them talking the same as when the camera is up close. The "sound in space" is just an editing decision where the sound moving through the spaceships themselves (the spaceships themselves are a medium for sound to travel--if you had your ear against the hull, these sounds are what you'd hear) is being displayed for the viewer. At least that's my head-canon. Did that make any sense?

In Star Wars Squadrons I found that leaning forward out of your seat and pressing your face directly against the inside surface of the cupola gives you a pretty much 180 degree field of vision, and is the optimal position to pilot a TIE fighter from. The extremely shallow canopy of the X-Wing, by contrast, means that 66% of your forward field of view is taken up by the flight controls, and you cannot see what is directly in front of you, only what is about 45 degrees or more above you. This, again, is with the top of your head physically touching the glass, mind. Nothing has made me appreciate a proper bubble canopy like playing that game in VR, I tell you.

So I get why for a space adventure fantasy movie it better fits the tone to have space ships that dogfight like WWII fighters with loud engines and pew pewing lasers, but I always liked how some of the old now non-canon EU novels actually came up with a lore explanation where they establish that ship's flight computers automatically self orient to fly like planes, which you can turn off make extreme maneuvers, and that space actually is silent, but all ships use cockpit speakers to simulate the sounds of nearby engines, lasers, explosions, etc to help the pilot with situational awareness. I kinda wish that for just one shot the movies would have done something fun with that lore where maybe a fighter is briefly damaged in a dogfight and those systems stop working for a few seconds and it just drifts backward in silence.

VR is providing such a stark contrast to flat 2d screens in terms of how well we are able to make out scale in it. I remember playing half life and standing in front of 4 meter tall lockers and hallways that are the size of airstrips lol In halo, seeing a grunts be almost eye to eye with me or a brutes hand being able comfortably cover my entire torso like a blanket, a hunter standing tall like a building or a banshee literally being the size of a small bus was insane. There is something about angles that does not translate in 2d at all. You will never unsee the flight hangar sized rooms in video games once you play a 2d designed game in vr. In gears of war, doorways are about 4 meter in hight, almost double the size of a room, just to fit the 3rd person camera. Since the environment is scaled accordingly to mask that, it leads to a hillarious over sizing of literally everything, which cannot be unseen once you found human sized objects and actively compare them. Ah yes surely this 3 meter hospital bed was made for humans

Yeah, this is one change in the new canon I enjoyed. Tie fighters stopped sucking. They did suck in the EU because people needed throwaway enemies in video games, and X-wing novels were made partially to boost sales of those games - the description of how fighters work are taken exactly from those games. The Alphabet Squadron novel series and SW: Squadrons game makes it evident that in the new canon Tie fighter is the force to be reckoned with.

lore accurate would be an x-wing being unable to shake off a tie fighter since ties are faster, have better acceleration and are like 40% more maneuverable.

I always assumed their HUD had some connection to the ships sensors creating a VR like 360 view and thats why they looked at the wall all the time (they can see through it). That's my head cannon at least

It'd be interesting if a helmet HUD gave them a 360-degree view through the solid walls of the cockpit. That would explain a lot.

I like to think there is an AR Hud inside their helmet visor that allows them to see tracking data overlays kinda like how the U.S Apatche attack helicopter has that eye thingy that lets the pilot see through a camera. Means you dont really need a widow.

For those saying that sound in space is scientifically inaccurate: Just think of the "sound in space" problem the way you think of a dialogue scene in a non sci-fi movie where there's a longshot of two people from a distance, but you still hear them talking the same as when the camera is up close, even though in real life you'd be unable to hear them from that longshot distance.

I always thought that TIE fighter pilots have a Heads Up Display in their helmets that allows them to "see" targets through their craft. Just like real world F35 pilots. The TIE bomber in OtaKing's TIE Fighter animation kinda does this also.
