Bethesda's creative Writing hasn't been in the best of shapes for quite a few years now. I think Starfield sets a new low in this regard (and a few others).
Here, I want to focus on writing and storytelling exclusively, as I am not the best person to be reviewing all the gamey bits. I don't care about them as much, and I don't think the abysmall writing in Bethesda games has been discussed enough.

It's hilarious because there a million other Npc with that title; and there dumb, tyrannical double standard masochist. it like pointless tbh; when in oblivion the player is the champion of cyrodil; and he worked for that title. its means little to nothing when the titles Just became literally anything + Born, it really shows the lack of effort put into the game writing; really shallow; At least in Skyrm even if there are multiple dragons born, where the only one alive and our significant actually matter in the grand scheme of thing. it Bethesda's Garfield it's just another useless pointless pronoun to just have a sticker in your forehead that says your special

yeah the funny thing about Delphine is, it's not bad writing to make an unlikable character. Unlikable characters can be very compelling. The writing failure with Delphine is the huge shortcoming in ways our dragonborn can respond. So she's a total prick, but the dragonborn just rolls over for her. And that's where the frustration comes from. Take Nazem in comparison, everyone hates Nazeem, but they LOVE to hate Nazeem, because they can respond to him however they want.
@lanterns_glow

Well, that, and she's basically the Elder Scrolls version of Peggy Hill. Total idiot? Check. Arrogant beyond any reason? Check. Acts like she's better than everyone with nothing to back that up? Check. And just like Maven Black-Briar (Thieves Guild in general, actually), she's immortal. Elenwen, despite arguably being the actual main villain of Skyrim, *isn't* immortal. And to top all that off, she's stupid enough to act like she's in-charge. Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't it her religion to follow the orders of the guy with dragon blood? And then they make it worse by having Paarthurnax be wyvern Jesus. Man saves all mortal races, does nothing but help, is literally the one reason we can save the world (So that's *twice* the man saved all mortal races), and is fully upfront that, yes, dovahs are inherently evil, and they have reason to distrust him. No sane person, not even an insane monster, could possibly justify siding with Delphine. But the writers clearly disagree, because she's essential, and you can't tell her to shut it.
@BigBoyBelisaurus
@BigBoyBelisaurus 5 ай бұрын
I think it's not all a writing issue. Her initial reaction to the Paarthurnax problem is consistent with her character and she has no reason to believe there is this one dragon not entirely focused on power and fear. There should be an option to convince her, though, and there isn't. Maybe the writers never noticed the problem, or maybe the quest designer got lazy or run out of time. Anyway, you should be able to negotiate with her, obviously, but at least she isn't suddenly becoming very harsh after 10 hours of complainig about her hurt feelings.

@@BigBoyBelisaurus Yes. Any kind of agency with that whole mess besides a binary choice would have been nice. I've never sided with the blades, because my boy Partysnax has in fact, shown that dragons don't need to be genocided for peace. He's lived in a world with only mortals for a stupidly long time, he could have carved out his own little empire, or just revealed himself and basked in the worship if he presented himself properly, but he didn't. He sat on the throat of the world, contemplated, and taught those who wished to learn the way of the voice. Like he taught Nord heroes in times long forgotten by man and mer alike. They wrote all that! All that's in the game! And what's frustrating about it for me at least is they don't actually DO anything with it. Or at the very least WE can't do anything with it. I also think making the dragon encounters basically being fights against animals completely fucked the whole concept in it's ear but that's neither here nor there.

You can't actually say anything to Nazeem, the only things you can do are: 1) ignore him, 2) pickpocket him, 3) attack him, 4) use magic\ console commands to make him do stuff or do stuff to him.

A plot about the player unknowingly opening the way for a cosmic horror and finding out the starborn hunter was trying to stop the player from doing so but he or her had done this loop so many times they don't even try to talk to player they just go for the kill but are too late to stop you. Then this opens up the hopping from multiverse to multiverse trying to find a way to stop or kill the cosmic horror as emissaries of the entity try to stop you. That would have been a better twist to the story but I guess that is too big brain for today's Bethesda.

The worst part about Starfield is it's so PAINFULLY bland. You can see that Emil's stink has ruined the interesting concepts the story brings forth. Emil has been doing this since MORROWIND. Mechanically,the game could use some fine tuning,and some adjustments. But Emil HAS to go,but Bethesda will NEVER get rid of him,even though he IS the problem. He wanats you to be ALWAYS good no matter what.
@HickoryDickory86
@HickoryDickory86 4 ай бұрын
I think it may be more accurate to say that Emil ruins the interesting stories the concepts bring forth. There are always decent enough ideas at the base of these games, but he fails to execute anything well. In skillful hands, these concepts _could_ be made better and grown into compelling stories, but Emil is not that guy. What's more, he often times admits, without realizing it, that he purposely goes in the opposite direction he should for whatever elementary reason he can think of to excuse his ineptitude. Like his "TedTalk" thing, where makes excuses for not building compelling stories and developing deep lore "'cause they'll just tear it up and make paper airplanes with the paper." F**k off, Emil, you hack!

"Write what you know" is perfect when explaining Starfield writing. Most writers feel like amateur interns who watched a lot of Marvel movies and spend their time on social media 24/7. It shows specially when it comes to Crimson Fleet characters writing. All bad guys are just plain rude. They are childish and immature. The leader lacks any witt or charisma. The writers wrote the villains as if they were rude internet commenters cause they don't know anything else to write about. The only thing they couldn't include is swearing. Otherwise it would have been like Forspoken.

That fucking hurts, man. I am a huge Cyberpunk fan, i really enjoyed 2077 and its stories, characters and Night City itself too. I knew Bethesda wont make a good story for Starfield, but my inner loot goblin was excited still, i wanted to sift through abandoned early human outposts, find derelict ships and just sift through loot and lore hidden in computers. Instead i got to watch as my PC, which ran CP2077 at 70+ fps with raytracing on, gave ma a stuttery, ugly experience instead lmao. Everything feels bland and tedious, i loved to clear out and loot up in my first pirate outpost, only to find the exact same one later, with the same ship-landing sequence triggering at the same spot. Ship combat was dull, space exploration was not even there and it just boiled down to me juggling storage space and fast-traveling around. Glad i torrented the game, played about 20 hours and nothing even remotely began to grab my attention.

I do think that exploitation and an exploration into neoliberal, NATO-esque, world orders were far better explored in actually political games like Disco Elysium, in response to 21:42. Hell, most of the cRPG / strategy genre that goes below the radar have extremely good explorations on specific mature topics. Want a more nuanced take of a man simply existing within a military dictatorship? Tyranny, Rogue Trader, and Highfleet will scratch this itch. Not only does each have a great premise, but they enhance the core themes via mechanics that feedback into the narrative. Such as Highfleet's POV allowing the player to feel a stretch removed from the conflict, as if he were viewing his actions from a drone camera, as he fights for survival. Naturally, the player accrues war-crimes along the way as there are villages dotted around the map that present as small little markers on your window. In the heat of battle, you must quickly gauge as either threats to your ship (as enemies combatants will fire from these markers) or harmless. Small things like that actively pull the player into an intriguing narrative. And hey, even if the player isn't receptive to the story (as-in he's literally not paying attention), well, at least he'll have a good time trying something different.

Ah, Starfield's factions. They present me a conumdrum; on one hand the faction questlines were some of the most fun I actually had in Starfield, but on the other you can actually tell which scifi franchises the writers liked: you've got 'Starship Troopers' land, the 'Firefly' themepark, etc. Decades and this is what they give us? I was saddened by the statement that Bethesda will never make another Morrowind; barring a major shakeup in Bethesda's creative team, a spiritual successor to Morrowind ain't happening; I don't even think they could pull off a sequel to Skyrim at this point. I don't feel good about typing that, just saying outloud what a lot of Bethesda's fans are thinking, giving the conversations ive had on various forums. You could *buy slaves* in Morrowind. (You could free them as well, of course!) With the ESG-soaked morass we got in Starfield, I cannot imagine Morrowind getting greenlit today, I'm genuinely worried about TES VI. I'm going to buy it, whenever it releases, and im going to play it, but Starfield has me VERY concerned about where TES is headed. I suppose we'll see. Thank god we've still got (free) modding on Morrowind and Oblivion.

If you're genuinely concerned about the state of TES after Starfield, then *DON'T* buy it and play it on release. *_WAIT_* (perhaps even for months) for reviews from trusted, proven sources, and _THEN_ decide whether or not it's worth your hard-earned money. If you just keep lapping up whatever slop they throw at you, they learn nothing from their mistakes (nor do you, apparently), and they will never have any incentive to course correct. You're just feeding into the cycle, hoping and wish they will change while reinforcing their choice not to.

Starfield is revealing of how incompetent Bethesda has become in recent years especially in writing without the years of lore building that Elder Scrolls and Fallout have. They don’t know how to build a interesting world and story without retreading their own stories the Dragonborn/Starborn connection is the most blatant it feels like they realize without magic powers the game would’ve been Fallout in space so instead of improving the gunplay without VATS or giving the player interesting gadgets to shake up gameplay they just shove in magic and give them a unoriginal name.

The game should have been at most 100 planets, would've been better to be 12. Ending by traveling through the unity, with a fallout style montage ending

I will note that you CAN tell compelling story in a "multiverse" but first you have to have an idea what you actually want to acomplish. Hell my favourite story right now technically has a multiverse but it's not "infinite" and the alternate worlds are like fleeting bubbles in the sea that reflect and distort the proper world. It's also written by people who understand what complications "multiverse" brings so they've reigned it in hard.

For as lost in the ESG/DEI sauce as it's become, Magic: The Gathering actually handled the idea really well (at least it did before I stopped following it). Each different Plane is - in a meta sense - a different genre setting. Innistrad is classic horror, Dominara is classic LotR-style fantasy, Ravnica is dystopian ubermetropolis run by ten different guilds, Kaldheim is Norse Mythology, Theros is Greek/Roman mythology, I forget it's name but there was a recent one that was 1920s mobster noir, I forget this other one's name too but it was fairy tale style fantasy. Hell, they even went so far as to rip off Hogwarts and turn it into an entire Plane of the Multiverse. And only very specific magic users - the Spark-gifted Planeswalkers - are capable of traveling between Planes; but they need to know where they're going, or they'll risk being lost to the Blind Eternities (the void between). They also need to spend time adjusting to a Plane's unique mana imprint before they can cast spells or leave to another Plane; but this is mitigated by how long you spend in a Plane (and how familiar you are with it), to the point that you can make several "walks" in a row before needing to rest. And when you want something more spicy, there's individual evil factions that can move between Planes at will via unknown means. The Eldrazi are Lovecraftian-style cosmic horror, the Phyrexians/New Phyrexians are body modification horror. There used to be the dragon Planeswalker Nicol Bolas, who was classic mustache twirling villainy, but he's been defeated; and Amonkhet, the Egyptian Mythology Plane, was sacrificed for the sake of a story that I hear wasn't told very well. MTG has a ton of great concepts, and early on in Wizards of the Coast's tenure, they made some good retcons to solidly establish rules. But I stopped following them when they drank the Kool-Aid.

I don't think even mods can save it. And the main reason is performance and loading screens. Bethesda games already run like crap. Modding in a more advance city, NPC's, etc. will just make it worse. And the loading screens. My god are they infuriating. It was barely tolerable in skyrim, but here? Heck no. Bethesda had a very good chance to make a realistic game. Just set it to 1 planet thats orbiting a red dwarf (as an example) so it has a red sky, dark colored water, dark flora and fauna. The planet could be windy to transfer heat because its tidally locked and thus no day/night cycle. Maybe you can have the planet have permanent rain storms in certain parts due to the hot side of the planet and cold side of the planet meeting in between. I can tell you this would've given them a truly unique setting. Perhaps this is the human's first foray into interstellar travel and they are just starting to colonize the planet, which would explain why there's only just towns and maybe like 1 city. And its your job to help colonize the planet, thus you gotta set up towns. Maybe have the player raise funds, gain favor, etc. with other NPC's so that they can create the towns faster/better. To be even more realistic, you can remove perkpoints, skills, weapon upgrades, etc. for the most part since its not very realistic. Rather, have the player naturally level up the skills which get used most commonly. Powerful weapons are gated behind massive amounts of money you have to gather. Thus, using less powerful weapons or modifying them to improve them would make more sense. Or if you do get a powerful weapon, you have to modify it and buy the mods to fully use it. Etc. This would let your loot and sell gameplay loop shine a lot brighter. Another aspect is the enemies. Stop having so many enemies. Have players resolve differences via speech more often. Or make the fights actually hard. Have a proper reputation system. Jail system. maybe even a court system. You've done some of this already bethesda. Their ancient engine (because they can't update it for crap) would be able to handle this FAR better than what they currently have.

Fallout though you cannot attribute to Bethesda, They haven't done anything new in the story, they just re-hash/re-package stuff from fallout 1 and 2, the only bit of originality came from new Vegas (again not Bethesda) You could argue Liberty Prime, + some of robots are the only new thing they actually added to the setting. Oh and Lovecraft stuff. So no originality to be found story wise.

Then again I thought the Waller Bridge Driod in Solo was satire and it wasn't. Poe's law is a bitch.

Traditional multiverse concept (every choice and even non-choice splits the world into multiple realities) by itself is quite problematic. That's why you need either a REALLY good writer to handle a story set within such a multiverse, or you need to think of and use a different kind of multiverse that is less problematic.

Great and totally entertaining analysis. I used to love the Fallout universe.... but Fallout 4 added lots of inconsistencies and made all the factions so unbelievable with their only motivation being to kill everyone else. It killed my interest in all future Fallout games. The Starfield world lore had some promise when they released the history of events. But just like the main story mystery ... nothing delivers. I just didn't find the factions and the destruction of Earth believable or immersive. I was excited to go to the hospital that started the colony wars. But I could not find any details on why it was built in a location that would start a war. I expected some intrigue or secret motivation. But I found nothing. The different parts of the world lore should support eachother. Instead Starfield world lore is a fragmented list of ideas that often contradict eachother. At the most basic level the Starfield story is flawed. The human race completely 100% leaves Earth due to radiation & lack of atmosphere to set up bases on planets that often have radiation and no atmosphere. How does that make any sense? And there is nothing in the terrible main storyline that makes you think about religion or faith. They totally oversold how "deep" the main story was going to be. The main story is as shallow as a puddle. The only mystery left in the game is House Varuun. I am very curious about them.... but at this point I have zero faith left that they can deliver good story about this faction. I too have been pushed past my breaking point. The world lore, writing & quests are just too weak, inconsistent & shallow to waste time playing their new games. So I am now a PREVIOUS Bethesda fan as the games they make now just make me want to cry ! The only Bethesda thing I am excited for is the Oblivion remaster if it is true.

Emotional relations in a game are amazing, when its not obnoxious and just throw in their in the players face; it must be presented in a way a player has to dig to find out the real reason why, that's what makes it engaging. adding a golden steak to the game is nice; slapping it the player face at each possible opportunity makes the steak not so golden anymore and much less tasty; when adding emotional., it must be set up in bread crubs so the player wont lost interest, and then near the end an entire bread; and then the end a golden steak. not it should be with variety instead of a golden steak, you got premium bread with some butter; not everything need to be juicy, neither spicy neither sweet, some can be sour and still taste good; especially for villain arcs, or in morale fetish, a response doesn't have to be inline, it could even be a random whim; but it must be done right. That how writing is, bread crumbs, a piece of steak, and then barbecue sauce, that escalates to toasted bread with butter, and a dash of olive, that later descends into a settle nice pinch of salt; cook up so nice story basically, whip up some nice fun backed in the oven, and hot.

There is nothing realistic about the game's space imagination, so claiming they tried to make it realistic is the same as you saying you think it is realistic. What is realistic about a multiverse, like it is some MCU nonsense, and then you have planets with nothing but rock and there are silly insect looking aliens on them, what do these animals eat? Rocks? Then you have warping through space, this also is not scientifically valid, it's literally star wars nonsense. And then you have humans on baron worlds struggling for resources, yet they have an entire galaxy of planets which the game already makes clear they can easily travel to any of them. Also not finding any half intelligent life, or even fossil evidence of intelligent life, instead everything is a silly insect type enemy is also like something out of Starship troopers. There is nothing scientific about this game, it is a bunch of nonsense made by Emil Pagliarulo, who claims his religion of Catholicism is his inspiration, lol.

Honestly I hope the failure of starfield does not make them do away with the idea off new game+ because ignore the story and lore around it. That's a good idea. Imagine a game with the complex guilds like morrowind with the story but something like shouts. Every new game+ you grow stronger you can experience stuff you you didn't have the skill to before. Imagin you kill alduin Delphine shuts her mouth and partonax tells you "By killing him something ripped across time. I fear alduwin is alive but not here." where? "Another time? maybe place? It's unknown." how do you know? "I am.. unsure. Look to the scroll one last time. it may lead you dova." Then you look at the scroll and a voice tells you alduwin lives in the echo of time. You can chose to chase him but will lose everything. But your power and knowledge will grow. life a new life and grow." Minimum story link it's time not dimensional so it's more of a groundhog day and you get to make the guilds complex again with a multi branching story. Can even bring back spell crafting so if something broke hey no worry ng+ cleaned it up because your effects got removed.

I HATED that game. The ship builder is super cool, but there’s no way to play the hero. The good guy. There’s no way to reject the bourgeoisie and unite all the outlaw factions in an attack on the formalized classism keeping people living in squalor in The Well. The criminal class obviously manipulates a fiat currency for their own benefit at the expense of the poor. I know, I hacked their banking system and tested them. Nope, if I can’t play Robin Hood in whatever reality anyone wants to dream up, I’m out. The Western town is pretty ok. People there live rough, too, but those are flippin’ pioneers. You couldn’t corral them in a nice apartment if you tried. Cool ship builder. Scrap the rest.
