What role is there for a spiritual leader in the futuristic and secular society of the Federation? Good question.

Fun fact: the Norwegian army has a few atheistic chaplains. Their responsibility is to help guide their peers with knowledge of philosophy, ethics and psychology. I imagine that's largely what chaplains would be in Starfleet.

Some of the most powerful moments for me in _DS9_ were: - When Sisko went to *Kai Winn* (of all people) for spiritual guidance ("Rapture," "The Reckoning") - How Kira talks about Sisko's importance to her as The Emissary (most notably in "Accession" and one late-season episode I can't remember) - When Winn comes to Kira with her crisis of faith (even though she doesn't heed her words) ("Strange Bedfellows") Honestly, that show's centering of faith and religion-for both positive and negative-is another factor in what makes it objectively the best _Trek_ series.

Also, as someone who has long left Chritianity, but can't identify with athism or vague spirituality, and has been looking into the Jewish faith (I really wanna visit/join a local temple) I wanna thank you for being kind with this subject and for having Barry Jewish specifically; it just feels right.

Cosimo II de Medici (the patron of Galileo among other things) had a Greek motto/logo: "κοσμος Κοσμωι κοσμος" "The cosmos of Cosimo is the cosmos" or "The domain of Cosimo is the universe." Galileo named the four satellites of Jupiter he discovered the Medicean stars in honour of Cosimo.

Ironically I talked to my Pastor on Sunday and the topic of being a Chaplain in Starfleet came up and she said she would love to be one. She used to be a Hospice Care Chaplain years ago and there's something special about being there for a family as their loved one get's ready to leave this mortal realm behind them. She said her sermons would focus on the exploration not only of space, but of ideas (like you mentioned in this video).

A while back, I actually participated in a not-Trek, but Trek-inspired RP and my character (not human, I figured it would be interesting to have an alien adherent, though) was a UU chaplain. Not a lot of my fellow RPers understood why I chose to make him UU, especially when the lore document for the setting stated that people from his culture tended to gravitate more towards Greco-Roman pagan revival than other Earth-based religions.

Steve, you nailed it again! Amazing work on a Starfleet Chaplain uniform. Very informative and fair enough for those that have a faith that others may not understand. My religion teacher used to Star the class the phrase “It’s a mystery!” on the front board. That is a good place to start. Any religion that claims to have ALL the Answers is selling something.

Given that you're an atheist, and this series is done in with a comedic bent, I want to commend you for handling the subject with reverence and respect. At no point did the humor feel to me, as a person of faith, like it was punching down. Thank you for that. P.S.: I also appreciated the not so subtle jab about accountability for atrocities by a person in an elected position of authority

Honestly, Christ's return it's probably a bigger deal among the evangelicals and the conservatives, particularly when he found out how his so-called followers treated their fellow man and when they, in turn, found out that Christ was okay with the LGBT community....

I think the Chaplin Corp is a very crucial position. You have to have someone to help with the complex religious conflicts that are a normal Starfleet crew would encounter. One of the best ways to learn about alien cultures is to study thier religious beliefs.
