The things I always like about this scene is the score, and the attention to detail. It may be hard to see on small screens, but you can see all the cruisers tagging along with the Hive Ships as the Hives exit hyperspace. On the score, what I like is that even though technically, the Daedalus lost this fight (she failed to stop the Hives from reaching Atlantis), there was still a bit of triumph in the music, since she was able to destroy two more Hive Ships, as well as a few of their escorts. Which given how outnumbered they were, ok still an accomplishment, especially when you take into account that they also survived to tell the tale
@ericdugdale8585
@ericdugdale8585 Жыл бұрын
It was actually really important that they did this, too, because of the situation when the hives start bombarding Atlantis. Given how shield resilience works in SG, and how the remaining 10 hives would have taken down the shield in 24 hours, those extra 2 hives would have reduced the shield's longevity by a *lot* of that time. Possibly even shortening it by half. Not to mention, they weren't expecting resistance here; by the time they were to arrive at Atlantis, they might have had their anti-beaming tech in full effect, meaning *no* nukes get through at all.

as we learn throughout the series, ships are vulnerable out of hyperspace. In several instances, Daedalus is ambushed as they exit hyperspace. Also, hive ships later on seem to be stronger, with more powerful main weapons that we don't see in this scene, which does feel like a storyline switch so that the daedalus isn't too tanky (although daedalus' weapons are pretty ineffective)

@@xolotlnephthys also have to remember that the hive ships were designed to battle ancient battle ships so the weapons were probably designed in a way that was more effective against ancient designed shields and hulls, once they had time to analyze the daedalus' weapons and shields they probably adjusted their weapons, ship hulls, tactics and systems to better battle with the deadalus as we do see a sudden surge in the scientist and engineer minded wraith getting more active and beginging to improve wraith tech once again.

It's worth noting that in this scene they're being attacked by an enemy that wants them intact (for boarding), with shots clearly skimming past the ship and thus hitting the shields edge-on at times. So it's possible that later strategy is more kill-oriented and thus the firepower is used more effectively.

@Deltarious

I never liked that the Wraith adapted so quickly to this tactic, they had a maximum of 5 seconds to react and realise what kind of threat blew them up the first time and then 1 after, it's very unlikely that they would have been able to analyse and come up with a countermeasure right after the battle even if they had some kind of automated telemetry. It does make sense that they adapted eventually and it would be very Wraith of them to set a deliberate trap to analyse the technology where they were deliberately sacrificing a ship with others scanning it to figure out what was happening. While yes you *can* handwave it away and say their sensors analysed the previous explosions and they started working on a countermeasure as soon as they were in hyperspace I just don't find it very satisfying that they reacted so quickly and so effectively

The Warith "ship" is a living organism. It is a "thinking hive". Think about it like you have 500 different buttons that do different things. If you got in this kind of trouble, you wouldn't think you would just start slamming all the buttons to see if anything works. I think it is understandable that it worked. Many of the Wraith's technical advantages came from the fact that their ships were actually alive. One of the reasons why they could make a lot of them quickly without the need of lots of resources. They just grew them.

@@Stinger522 IIRC, the Asgard/Vanir told Jackson they were attacked by the Wraith and lost their intergalactic ships in one of the first attacks. While we don't know if the Asgard had that tech ten thousand years ago, it wouldn't be a stretch to think this group would try to use it offensively. And having the Wraith deploy an existing countermeasure against something they fought before sounds much better then having them develop it within seconds from scratch.

@cgi2002
@cgi2002 Жыл бұрын
Real question you need to ask is, why didn't they just beam the ZPM's up when the cities sheild was down. Or more importantly why they don't just use the ancient lab in Atlantis to make more, there would definatly be a lab in the city for manufacturing more of them, or you know more likely a storage cupboard somewere in the city with a few hundred of them. Just like there would be an automated factory for manufacturing drones to refill the chair platform. If you've been under siege for over 100 years, you would have militarized your city quite heavily and made it basically fully self sufficient. Or alternatively you would have built those facilities somewere in the milky way, which was at that point, fairly safe (10000 years is before the rise of the system lords, humans would have basically been limited to earth, the galaxy would have been free and clear). Also consider that after the end of the war/evacuation the surviving ancients still had to go around and update all their headgrabby data devices with their most recent knowledge base.

One thing that always bothered me was that who cares if they can't beam onto the ship. Just beam a proximity based warhead literally 100 feet off one of their hulls and watch it go boom. You dont need it to detonate inside for some juicy damage. Might take a few more warheads but that act alone could cripple any ship.
@ericdugdale8585
@ericdugdale8585 Жыл бұрын
It actually makes a huge difference to how much damage the nuke does. They end up explaining this explicitly in the series finale, how a confined nuke has nowhere for the energy to go except all throughout the ship, while a hull-adjacent detonation will just warm the hull a bunch. Also, if there's a jamming field, then there's no reason to assume it hugs the surface of the hive's hull that closely.

@@ericdugdale8585 see I can't agree with that. Then daedalus missiles shouldn't work. When they make impact with the outside hull and cripple the ship they deal massive damage. I'm basing this off the episode where the daedalus came out hyperspace in the void between galaxies and shot all of its nukes at the one hive and only a few crippled it. They also emphasize that the biggest problem with the missiles is that they don't get to make it to the target most of the time due to fighter interference.
@ericdugdale8585
@ericdugdale8585 Жыл бұрын
@@nitrothechampzach4702 Oh they'd still do some damage. The damage drops off *rapidly* with distance though. A nearby nuke (proximal beaming) is less effective than an in-contact nuke (Daedalus missiles) is far less effective than an internal nuke (beaming, sneaking, etc.). Keep in mind that in the battle of the void, that hive did *survive* getting hit by that nuke, even as it took serious damage. It does probably matter exactly where on the hive the missile lands. Hitting the inside of its surface folds would result in a lot more exposure to the explosion than a hit on the outside of those folds, for example.

@@doords hyperdrive on Tau'ri ships was originally Goa'uld in origin, then Human originated powered by Naquadriah, then Asgard hyperdrives. The shields were always Asgard ones, seemingly. It does seem strange that they never placed any alien weapons on their ships. However we do see evidence that USAF weaponry is effective against unshielded targets like death gliders. The rail guns may be effective even against shielded targets. Missiles were shown to be somewhat effective against Goa'uld ships. It seems Tau'ri weapons are not as far behind as other areas of technology like shields and propulsion.

This was the main problem with Stargate Atlantis. The writers kept creating situations where only bad logic kept the expedition from gaining a firm upper hand. Logically having destroyed the first wraith attack the expedition had an opportunity to open negotiations for peace with the Wraith. The Wraith could not know how many ships the expedition could field, or what other radical technology they could bring to bear. But by pre-emptively striking the Wraith they exposed their hand and allowed the enemy to develop a countermeasure. But this was necessary for the writers to keep the tone of the series. It was still poorly done with lots of logical holes. I really enjoyed The Siege three parter, but it did have a lot of problems and the writing of Atlantis wasn't as sharp or effective as SG-1. Later in SGU they used the same bag of tricks more effectively, but it was still prone to lots of wasted opportunities and somewhat eye-roll-inducing moments!

Kinetic weapons are cheaper than energy weapons. In addition, in the stargate universe, the humanity of the Earth has not yet united. Therefore, resources are limited. With Asgardian technology and computers, the US, as the organizer and head of the SG program, does not have enough resources to create a space fleet. Whereas the Goa'uld essentially controlled most of the Milky Way galaxy, which is millions of planets. Yes, most of the worlds they controlled were in the Middle Ages, but the Goa'uld had a certain number of industrial and developed star systems. So the USA and the SG program could not physically manage to build a space fleet in a decade, only a couple of poorly equipped ships. Even today, the construction of an aircraft carrier and its equipment with an aircraft wing exceeds $ 10 billion, but imagine the hypothetical cost of a spacecraft 700 meters long and with the need to use minerals and metals from other planets? I think that the hypothetical cost of one ship shown in the series reaches 500 billion dollars.

We know ancients use a ring style transportation and the chance that they would of had a human nation to develop asgard tier teleportation tech is unlikely. I mean, the cruisers from the previous scene retreated and reported on the teleportation technology back home. I mean, it can't be THAT hard to jam Asgard beam teleportation technology. It's not like it's designed for use as a weapon. Just have to disrupt the signal enough that anything you send doesn't arrive in one piece. They can't teleport through basic energy shields, like even that of the inferior goul'd. It's probably not that difficult to disrupt.

According to what some people told me, the Wraith ships dont use shields and as such when they enter ftl they are constantly hit with radiation worse than human's nukes, this force them to exit ftl and wait for their hulls to regenerate from the damage. Nukes in outer space in vacuum environment are drastically less deadly. It's the atmosphere that surrounds the earth that makes nukes really deadly. Nukes detonate at a specific altitude depending on the devices yield, So the pressure wave bounces off the earth creating a second pressure wave that merges with the original pressure wave. Forming a stronger pressure wave that travels further and has more pushing power to knock buildings over.
