My biggest annoyance with SG-Atlantis was the repeated finding of then loss of these ships, often within the same episode! Then they had the battle with the Asurans and DIDN'T have crews standing by to seize these ships?!?

Or their constant loss of ZPMs. I mean, I get that having a reliable source of new ZPMs would remove any threat or challenge, but the speed with which they lost, depleted, or blew up ZPMs is just ridiculous -- especially when they had multiple opportunities to capture them or learn how to make new ones.

there's the story telling issue too, the starships were just too powerful, they had to come up with excuses to keep the daedalus away to avoid making it too much of a deus ex machina. Most of the conflicts on SGA could be solved by having a huge battleship flown over their enemies... even the pegasus asgard would hardly be a match for a fully crewed aurora

Attention should also be drawn to the fact that these ships, like much Atlantean technology, can sit around for tens of thousands of years and require little more than a dusting off and repairs to whatever was wrong with them in the first place. Power generation, electronics, it will all still work. They built stuff to last!

I always had issues with Ancient tech and the crazy time periods they would last. I have some theories as to this, but I hate it when fans have to retcon the science behind a show. Atlantis being millions of years old but having the same style of tech as when it left earth (ref. Antarctic defense platform). Aside from being manned all this time (minus the 10,000 years at the end), I suppose the Ancients achieved a pinnacle in “durable tech” which has never been surpassed. Space travel is dangerous, and durability may be valued over innovation. iPhones are nice, but if it can’t handle harsh conditions, what good is it in the field? Still, tech needs maintenance. All stargates were maintained over the years by the advanced races that discovered them. This was my issue with Destiny. No evidence of self repair tech, presumably unmanned most all of the time, and in constant flight. If nothing else, the FTL drive should have failed from wear and tear. The time scale (millions of years) is just way too large to be workable.

@@martincalixte2059 thays one of the things I love about Ancient, Asgard and Halo Forerunner technology because it can sit for tens of thousands of years if not hundreds and be just as good as the day it was finished like it has to be catastrophically damaged.

@@qdllc You forget we can build stuff today to last so much longer, we just don't because its not economical. Now if you are intentionally building a ship like Destiny, you would build it to withstand more abuse than it should ever take in a routine mission. Basically if running the shield takes 5v you build the system to take 15v so that you never really wear the system out. Especially if you are getting most of your power from sun scraping, you really need to make sure your shield never fails so you seriously over engineer it to wear you can never overload it either.

I feel people forget the Asgard beams were made to end Ori ships so it makes sense they could deal with Aurora class vessels being that their creators were at similar technological levels. Assuming the ORI gained no further understanding in their weird ascension.

Asuaran ships also never progressed Alteran ships did. The travlers aurora was likey way more powerful than asuaran being it was much newer. Im not saying it could stand the beams but i think it could have took more shots. Had the lanteans been around they would have upgraded to counter the beams im sure.

I think it should be made clear that a fully-functional Aurora-class hyperdrive is faster than an Asgard hyperdrive installed on human vessels and powered accordingly (as in no ZPM). Only a city ship’s hyperdrive has been shown to downright beat an Asgard hyperdrive (again, installed on a human vessel). The fact that an O’Neill ship towed the Prometheus from the Milky Way to the Ida galaxy in less than a day is a serious feat. -I’m an Asgard fanboy with too much time on my hands and I approved this message.

I'm inclined to agree, Asgard hyperdrives have made intergalactic transits in a couple of days while Lantean hyperdrives had to be retrofitted to even attempt such things

I love this show , I had a dream once I was interstellar being a million times more powerful than a descended being and was free to do whatever I wanted, and was hundreds of millions years old , and I came across earth and helped the stargate program flourish through everything you see in the TV series I helped them require "free" gau'ld ships and Ori ships and the Atlantis team get Atlantis running again and got rid of replicators that the ancients made and gave replicator planet and technology resources to them and their entire fleet too , so with the all the gau'ld and Ori ships in milky way galaxy under Earth's command and Atlantis and replicator planet and fleet in Pegasus galaxy in their hands earth was doing really great with my assistance and helping them build a galactic domain exploring and learning lol

The ancients were superior in a lot of areas, but the asgard did manage to surpass them in two notable areas: hyperdrive tech and ranged interaction effects. Asgard beaming systems are more effective than anything we ever see the ancients use, and the same tech seems usable for holographic projection too. I wonder what the size limit for transport from an asgard-designed stargate-equivalent would be, since asgard beaming systems can handle rather large items...

Well, we had SGU and although they kinda messed that one up, I still enjoyed watching it for the Lantean stuff. Still sad they cancelled it (or wrote it so badly in the first place, leading to the cancelling of it).

but it would be frustrating. Powerful and proud people, that underestimated their foe to such a degree that they loss due to being flooded by wave after wave. At times I think the tau'ri are actually a engineered version of humanity built to wage war and win. A better, more violent and effective war machine than the Asuran replicators (who didn't want to fight the wraith and did nothing once the Lantean fled to Earth) The Tau'ri were made so that the last thing an enemy of the Lanteans would see is a human face.

Nick L hmm...the Lantians thrived for millions of years before their ascension Meaning they were proud of a reason and despite losing a few wars and Desasters in all this time (ori, plague & wraiths) i honestly presume they were not always like the negativ stereotype which is often portrait Would love something like that! Asgard Shields and Plasma Beams, railguns to assist on Point defence, and Ion Cannons (Asgard or Tollan) to assist the Pulse Cannons. Hell, add an Ancient beam weapon.

I'm not saying you should stop with other franchises, but PLEASE keep doing as much Stargate stuff as you can. If you know anything about the franchise, you know that it (or at least the TV canon) is destined for obscurity, and videos like this make me feel that it's not been completely forgotten. It also has the possibility of getting others interested in the series's.

If the Asgard weapons weren't capable of making short work of such ships I would've been quite disappointed at the lack of progress in the Asgard. I mean it's been 10,000 years and the Asgard are one of the four races.

Lantians had beam technology better tha the asgard. They had beams that could cut a hive ship in half in one shot. A fully functioning lantern ship would make short work of even an oniel class. The drones will go straight through its shields.

@The high ground This just goes to show how little people pay attention. The whole battle of asuras was planned on dropping out of hyperspace whilst the majority of the replicators fleet was on the planet. And those that were in orbit were taken by surprise, when their shields were down. This is clearly in the episode. But nah, it's just ignored. And those were not drones bouncing off the shields. The Aurora class has energy based weapons as well, powerfull ones, as seen destroying traveller ships and hives. They were not drones. Look what happened whe the replicator fleet actually engaged the alliance, they started getting smashed. Let's put it correct yes. It took two shots from an ori ships main weapon to destroy a shielded deadalus class ship. It took multiple shots from other craft, plus four or five beam weapon shots to take down an ori mothership. The deadalus class can easily power one of those ancient platforms. They dont just dont have the tech or understanding. The asgard needed ancient knowledge to defeat the replicators. The ancients were way ahead.

@@nihilityjoey better is subjective as if the Asgard made a beam satellite of their own it might've been stronger than the Atlantian satellite. the main difference between the two was power allocation the Atlantian one needed minutes to charge while the Asgard one could fire as needed.

I love the word "Aurora" Because of this ship. I went out and bought an Aurora R6 Alienware desktop 3 months ago to go with my already custom built set up and love it. Reminds me of Stargate everytime I turn it on. :)

they could likely fixed forward facing gun's like that (remember that the satellite's where the size of hatak class vessels and most of that was gun length each gun was likely the length of a 304) only have also more and varied pulse weapons( small fast tracking point defence and larger anti capital guns). maybe even copy over the side bay to the other side to double jumper count and adding pulse cannons to the jumper's

I thought the same. It has that big sensor system on one side, add the satellite cannon on the other. Drones are like missiles, eventually they will run out. That cannon could dispatch a mothership with one shot.

slight mislabeling in this vid the bridge was somwhat central at the dome shaped obsevation point. this is supported by the video of the otion entering battle and the wraith blasts striking the ship ahead of the bridge

Yes, I was just about to say the same. The episode where Shepherd is abducted by the Travellers and the bridge takes a direct hit shows it's the central dome on the top of the ship.

If I were going to be cheeky about it, I'd make that forward 'bridge' the chair room (fire control) while the bridge is that midships half-dome. Practically, though, that forward section may be flight control that directs Puddlejumper traffic in and out of the ship's launch bays.

Bridge location is on the middle of the ship,not in front.Even in the episode when they meet the travelers you can see it.

There are two control chairs on an Aurora class ship, effectively giving it a primary bridge and a secondary bridge.

Man I've forgotten SO MUCH of stargate. Watched both series all the way through at least twice, but I the only one of these I remember is the one they found with a live crew millions of years old because they had been cruising at something like .99c after getting stranded.

The asgardian lasers destroyed the Aurora class ship only because they managed to hit it before they raised the shields. Once the shields were up even those lasers wouldnt pass through that easily.

I'm pretty sure deadalus class in its upgraded form was far more advanced than aurora class. Case and point, drones can't penetrate the shields of deadalus. Aurora class is a glass cannon in theory, but with very strong shields and poor armament. Ori ships were the strongest ships humans ever run into and asgard beams would go through its shields in 4-6 shots, I can't imagine aurora-class having same shield strenght. Otherwise wraith weapons would've been like flys hitting the windscreen of your car.

They pass right through Ori shields like a hot knife through butter. Presumably Ori shields were far stronger than Aurora class shields, considering Ori shields were developed by ascended beings and Ancient shields were developed before they ascended. While this is a three year old video, it just came to me that the Aurora-class might be the ship-design the Ori developed their ships against. Think about it: A not very maneuverable ship that depends on superior shielding and weaponry, not really carrying large numbers of fightercraft. The strong forward weaponry of the Ori-vessels could easily land hits on thise ships. On the other hand, the maneuverable Deadalus-class, fielded by the Tau'ri, could easily escape with Sublight or fight back, once strong enough weaponry was deployed, outmaneuvering the main Ori-gun. So, I think it is likely the Ori assumed that the Ancients would help the inhabitants of their galaxy and would most likely supply schematics of those ships to them. And in a full-scale-war, I think Ori-ships wouldve fared fairly decent against Aurora-classes.

I was looking into the ships of multiple sci-fi shows (research for a fanfiction I'm helping with...) and I have noticed how freaking LUCKY the terrans of SG1 were...they got the tech from the Asgard and the Alterans in silvered plates....goa'uld tech was back engineered. Poorly. Then the Asgard helped them (meaning they got a lot even more advanced tech to copy from). Then they got their hands on Atlantis...and the Alteran knowledge reservoirs....One can argue that they didn't have to develop anything from zero. They GOT full data bases to learn and copy from....extremely advanced data bases at that...very lucky indeed! I wouldn't mind half as much if the writers didn't kill off the Asgards. They were the ONLY race that could actually keep the humans in check. And yeah: the SG1 was an altruist and great people overall. BUT the government the answered to? They just needed another Kinsey wannabe to assume control and fuck the whole galaxy (and any other they were in)...humans will be humans... And before I forget: ODYSSEY DREADNOUGHT STAR CRUISER AND CHRONOS TEMPORAL DREADNOUGHT FROM STO PLS!!!!

When i think about the destiny, a ship that literally goes in a star for refill and that was constructed many generations ago, i would tend to think that that ships of aurora class a way stronger and evolved. Especially when the ancients had developed zpms integration with many of their tenchogy. However, atlantis series had no mentioned of this...

I would take a fully functioning one of these over any ship in the show. Who knows what other technology it has at its disposal. And these ships were nerfed by the ancients. No intergalactic hyperdrives and no ZPM modules. Those ships were able to power the drones without a ZPM, and most tech that used a ZPM required a lot of power. Drones are interfacing with the mind, the drones are controlled by the users mind, and they can be fired in the hundreds. This ship is a beast. And with a ZPM on board you ain't touching this thing.

@Spacedock: Thanks for doing a video on one the greatest battleship-classes of the Stargate Universe. :) Is one of the ships attacking Asuras in Niam's flashback an Aurora class, too? It lacks the T-shaped main engine and posesses two sensor arrays. Is it a special Variant, or a completely different ship?

Considering how Hive Ships, Traveler ships and an Ancient Aurora class ship were able to effectively defeat Asurian (Replicator) Aurora class ships I had assumed the Replicator Aurora class ships were low quality coppies of the origionals, they seemed to have much weaker shields and (as far as I can remember) they were never shown to have drones, the cannons may be more powerful because they did not have (or use) drone technoligy, to the Asurian Replicators it may have seemed wrong to use drone weapons (as they themselves were designed as a form of drone weapon), hence they powered up the ships other weapons but without drones they did not have the raw firepower or sheild penetrating abilities of the origional

I agree, we never saw a Lantean Aurora in battle with Asgard ships or their beam weapons. The equivalent Asuran ships were inferior. I dare say drones from a Lantean ship would breach Asgard sheilds too.

Of course, also the lantean civilization if they endured long enough they would have retrofitted even more this warships, updating energy efficiency, weapons, shielding, etc. No other civilization would be even a match for this vessels. Also they created this warships to repel the wraith and focused on not only hive ships but the darts. With enough time they probably could have created more clases of warships, destroyers etc to engage not only the wraith.

Aurora is smaller than Atlantis and some people still try to tell Atlantis is only 4000meters when the facts (several time in Atlantis show it has been said it is miles from the center tower to the edge) say other. Atlantis minimum size is 6400 meters, some research by several Gaters even say it to be closer to 8000meters. But yes Aurora is about 3km

My biggest problem with "Stargate Atlantis" are the zero point modules. The Lanteans used them extensively and had the means to produce them at will. If I had found their city and had the ability to use their technology and read their data, one of the first things I would have done is find where in the city they built their zero point modules and figured out how to work the machinery and started building them. With a full array of modules for the city they could have used the city's stargate to contact Earth and shipped some Zero point modules there so they could power up the Antarctic station to full power and the information, and maybe supplies, to connect a zero point module to Earth's stargate so they could travel easily both ways.

In this universe. spaceships were designed with command bridge in front like aircrafts and not a tower bridge like Japanese Scifis (the works of Leiji Matsumoto, and Gundam universe)

I never understood the inconsistency in design when it came to Lanteans. The Star Gates look elegant and ceremonial, the face grabber looks organic and eldritchian, Atlantis looks art nouveau, and their battleships look almost Terran in design. I like each design individually but together it doesn't look like one civilization.
