While I don't exactly like Discovery, I can tell no expense was spared. Stargate Origins is a cheap production as you pointed out. Sci-Fi and dare I say action with CGI needs a bigger budget to immerse yourself in that world. Good video as always.

James You are right. SG-1 did it with trucks. It did take them 15 minutes of the truck engines running at full blast though. I’m going to give Sam the benefit of the doubt here and say she could get it done since she knows what she is doing. It was a bit silly alright, but not charging the gate with a 30s car in under a minute silly :)

I was with you up until the point where you said you were hoping for a full reboot. I just can't understand why anyone would want that. Half the appeal of this series has been watching humanity advance from 90s-era tech to a powerful spacefaring civilization. If we throw all that away and go back to square one, then what's been the point of the last 17 seasons?

Yes reboot is not a good idea for this. I loved the Battlestar Galactica reboot because it needed to be reborn into the new more realistic sci fi era not just cylons go pew pew. But Stargate is already well established with good writing and realism having so much work done that it would be such a waste to reboot it.

Incredible how Star Wars, Star Trek and Pokemon all ruin their Franchise with pure, unfiltered Incompetence on God-Level, but Stargate does not even get the Chance. One Trash Show after another is produced, but yet, Stargate does not even get this Chance, even though it's probably the best of the Mentioned. Probably. I can't believe And the Fans also aren't helpful sometimes, i have to admit: Many are stupid and actually want SGU to continue, thinking it was the right direction, even though it was the absolute Opposite of that. AND OBFVIOUSLY we need the Wraith Storyline to actually Finish!! Obviously! They can't seriously keep waiting for years and years and then say "Well, it's too late now anyway." OR CAN THEY?! No one can possibly that stupid, right?! This is a million-dollar-franchise!

Stargate Origins makes Stargate Infinity look like a masterpiece. At least "Inifity" can be explained by the fact it is a cartoon, aimed at children, and only loosely based on the IP. "Origins" is a student project that was somehow released to a wider audience. Other than those kids' parents working at MGM and wanting to promote their children, I can't think of any other reason to release it. Calling it a "Stargate revival" is beyond insane.

The other review I had seen mentioned the memory wipe at the end (making the entire show irrelevant) but they neglected the part about the memory implant which actually does sort of ruin Kathrine's character. The truly sad thing is if you wanted to do a short series on Stargate that had no impact on the main series but took the premise back to a time before the humans had a ton of technology that can rival the G'ouald (sp?) just have it based on a group of humans from another planet! Criminy, there were tons of worlds they ran into that had stargates and people on them. How cool would it have been to have a short series about a team from a planet doing some adventuring only to encounter the G'ouald and end the show with their civilization under attack? Then show the ruins decay over time to eventually have the stargate come to life and an SG team step out to see the ruins of this civilization long gone.

Cheap might be the wrong complaint to throw at Star Trek Discovery. It's more like the money is in the wrong place. The original series had paper machete and hope to make their sets but the writing was solid and often deep. The writing just isnt there for discovery. It honestly reminds me of the Transformers film series. Nothing makes sense, everyone is yelling, the camera cant hold still and, as impressive as the cgi might have been at the time, it's hard to deny that its so different from its source material that it feels like a lesser original idea hiding behind the better ideas of what came before just to get people to watch it. Just my opinion though.

I actually like Ba'el. And I mean I actually wanted to like him. He has such charm that the actor pulls off with such flare that he puts you off guard. You don't know how to take this guy. He cordial, even downright respectful to the main heroes that you TRY to forget that he spent an episode torturing O'Neil to death, rezzing him, and repeating until Daniel bent the ascended playbook rules to get a rescue party together. I actually spent most of the last two seasons wanting this bastard to do a face-turn just because I liked him being around. After spending seasons dealing with Gua'ld threats that tried to one up the last guy in being more evil and more threatening; Ba'el was a breath of fresh air, a villain who came at them sideways partially because he had seen everyone else go head to head with Earth and come up short. He was at that moment the perfect foil to the SGC, a charming schemer who every once in awhile has enough of a compass to help save the day. And even in the close out movie Ba'el says it himself in the moment of his victory that he likes Earth and the humans; that much of what he said was at some level honest. He even dies trying to save us.

I would be happy if they never activate the Stargate in Origin. Just a pulpy adventure of stopping Nazi from figuring how it work or exploiting it for the war. Maybe have the bad guys figured out how to activate the gate at the climax, the good guys won and pushed the main baddy into the gate as it shut down. Set this climax in the middle of an air raid or a bigger battle. At the end, the good guys decides to move the DHD away from the gate so the gate would be useless even if it is capture (easier to move the DHD than the gate). Air raid destroy the warehouse/hanger housing the gate, the good guys had to abandon the truck to save their own lives. The DHD got captured by German grunts who doesn't know what it is, the gate is left buried until after the Allies recapture the area, leaving the gate useless until the 90s.

At best, Origins is bonus content for the Stargate streaming service. It’s a real shame. I think most of the people working on it tried their best given the circumstances. The directress seems like a competent and eager person, the cast was honestly great, only they didn’t get anything to work with. Had this been 10 Episode series with 40-50 mimte Episodes, a decent budget and maybe a canon bending plot devices, this could have been great. Imagine, someone changing the timeline, so the Stargate project becoming active in the 1930s, and exploring the ramifications it could have, while giving us week-to-week Indiana Jones-esque adventures and setting up the premise that Catherine has to correct the timeline - that could have been a great show (even though time travel plots can be headache-inducing). Sadly, the cast and crew were never given a proper chance.

I never watched this, and I can't say you make it sound very appealing. Which is a damn shame, because I absolutely love the Stargate universe. I have a lot of "eh" feelings for the movie, but when it comes to SG-1, it's a show I will rate over Star Trek: The Next Generation, which is a big statement coming from me. I'm really hoping Stargate gets some love eventually, much like Star Trek is right now, because knowing how it abruptly ends (I've never seen it, but heard about the cliffhanger ending of SG:U) just breaks my heart to the point where I've been reluctant to finish watching the shows. If Stargate finally gets a worthy show, a cushy budget, loveable cast, and awesome story, my excitement for it will go through the roof.

Ways to fix the series' story without adding (much) more to the budget: 1. Make it clear that it's a prequel from the start. Don't throw in the retcon at the last minute and expect the fans to be happy about it. Establish that the reason Bruke knew about the Stargate is because the Nazis found the Alpha Gate's DHD in Germany (as established in the SG-1 episode "Watergate", the DHD that was subsequently seized by the Soviet Union during WWII and used with the Alpha Gate when they found it at the bottom of the ocean after "Small Victories"), along with a small list of gate addresses chiseled in stone (by the Tok'ra). 2. Have the gate destination not be Abydos but a remote Tok'ra base. The tablet was the Tok'ra's version of the monolith from 2001, a way to guide mankind when it becomes technologically advanced enough to figure out what the Stargate is and how to activate it. 3. Aset in this case is the leader of the remote Tok'ra base (which means they can re-use the crystal tunnel sets from the show) and the one who wrote the tablet. She's disappointed that the Tau'ri that came through aren't as advanced as she hoped but welcomes them anyway. 4. Aset not being a villain means that Bruke is now our main antagonist. He wants to seize the advanced technology of the Tok'ra for the Reich and he tricks Aset into thinking he's on the level by claiming that "Germany wants to unify our divided world under a single banner so that we can expand into the stars and we need help." She refuses, as the Tau'ri are nowhere near culturally advanced enough to be of help yet and plans to modify their memories so that they think the Stargate never worked before sending them back. Bruke's squad catches her and the rest of the Tok'ra off guard with their projectile weapons and a firefight ensues during which Bruke accidentally broadcasts the Tok'ra base's position to the Goa'uld. 5. Aset and the Langfords battle their way to the Stargate as the Goa'uld attack. She dials the Stargate and sends the Langfords through before being gunned down by Jaffa belonging to an unidentified system lord as their forehead symbols don't match any of the known Goa'uld. 6. After returning to Earth it is revealed that Aset injected them with the memory-altering compound (the Reol chemical from "The Fifth Man" which as "The Summit" established the Tok'ra knew about) covertly. They forget that the Stargate worked but are convinced that making it work is possible, retaining a subconscious memory of the events and setting the stage for the original film and SG-1. I think this is realistically the best prequel possible that features a young Catherine Langford given the in-universe history of the franchise.

Recently rewatched STO and... there is a good movie buried here. The cast is really likable and the idea of Catherine going through the Stargate to look for her father while trying to stop an alliance between the Goa'uld and Nazi Germany is actually really good (as a reboot or alternate timeline story at least). However, MGM gutted the project with the severely limited budget. The entire thing is clearly written around it and I'm honestly surprised how good some of the production design looked considering. And then there was some weird stuff in there like a certain romantic relationship at the end, that came absolutely out of nowhere. The moment when original Catherine Langford holds the locket at the very end was a nice touch though. Really a shame. A project which clearly had a lot of heart and effort put in by the team, but was gutted by the studio's budget. They never even had a chance.

People say Michael Burnham or Rey are Mary Sues... but those characters have flaws, make mistakes and Burnham in particular is treated like shit for the better part of season 1. Catherine Langford as per STO actually is a Mary Sue: she is more competent than everyone else at everything and also way more competent than she reasonably should be, they guys are clearly in love with her for no real reason. Worse, she doesn’t really have an arc. Though I do admit with a better script and a bigger budget, everyone involved could have excelled. I really like the cast, the three leads are very likable, the crew clearly put some effort into it with what little they had. This should have been at least a decent-budgeted old fashioned 4-Hour Mini-Series.

To be fair, an ancient throne room would actually have been that cramped. The pyramids and other buildings in the movie and SG1 were waaaay to open; the roof would have collapsed in from the sheer weight of the materials. Only thru newer building techniques and materials of the late Middle Ages did we start to see the grand open spaces that we associate with royalty today. Yeah, obviously they designed the sets this way out of a lack of a budget. Just saying this, ironically, makes it more accurate than most productions. 🤪

I liked it much better than Babylon 5 Lost Tales. I thought with actual sets, they pulled this off better than WB with B5. Though I can't dispute any of your complaints and I haven't made it past episode 7 or 8 yet. I feel the most glaring strike against it is the Jaffa. The actress was not a master of her fight craft. And the fights should have been shot/edited to avoid upskirting her bafoonishly over and over. But mostly I am sad that we didn't get the Stargate/Dark Matter crossover and Dark Matter season 4 (and 5).

I would've used miniatures and rear and front projection. Colour correct the colour to neutral on earth and bump up the warmth and saturation when they go through the stargate.

The story could have been a 40 minute flashback on Stargate SG-1....and it could have been entertaining; instead, I realized I just wasted 50 minutes and turned off my TV. Didn't care how it ended.

I wondered why they did this if they weren't going to put the money behind it. What was the point? But MGM have possibly overcooked the franchise now letting SG1 go on for 10 years (which saw a decline in the stories in the last couple of years in my opinion), then trying to recapture the magic with Atlantis which got 5 seasons and although a solid series felt at times like a simple SG1 rehash, I mean Colonel Shepherd was basically just Jack O'Neill. And of course Stargate Universe died a death after only 2 seasons which was probably a blessing as it was so morose and depressing to watch.

Hey I’m a new fan and have a question regarding the early 2000s battlestar galactica series. I’ve heard a lot of people say the ending is one of the worst endings ever and I don’t recall you addressing the ending of the series. Without spoiling too much, can you explain what controversy is over the ending? After game of thrones I don’t want to waste my time on shows that end badly.
@RowanJColeman
@RowanJColeman 5 жыл бұрын
I did do Retrospective videos on that show, but they do contain spoilers. The controversy is mainly over a lack of payoff. There's lots of mystery box type plotting and it doesn't quite resolve in a satisfying way. Despite all that I personally still enjoy it. You should watch the show either way :)
@DownFallNetWork
@DownFallNetWork 5 жыл бұрын
I might be ok with it then. In comparison to how game of thrones ended, I didn’t care that they ignored established prophecies and buildups, my problem was with unrealistic decisions and throwing away character aspects and development.

I stopped caring about mystery boxes when I read this book series as a kid called a series of unfortunate events. It had by far the most mystery boxes I’ve ever seen and made no effort to answer any of them. I’m still pissed after all these years haha I refuse to read another book series because of it

The thing with endings is everyone has there own opinion/hope of how something should end so it almost always will be disappointing. I actually liked the ending. Not perfect but still good. One example. I didn’t like SG1s final episode as it was different than I thought it should have been. It’s now one of my favourite episodes. Go figure.

As bad as it is I'm more worried about the implications of this show. Is MGM going to follow the Star Trek obsession with prequels ? If they do make an new show will they go down the Discovery route of badly made prequel that contradicts canon and nobody asked for? I don't think its unreasonable to say that the overwhelming majority of Stargate fans want a sequel show that respects canon. Please no more prequels !

RE: STARGATE ORIGINS: CATHERINE In the Western film Genre, the Indian women were always portrayed as those who cooked, cleaned and were barefoot and pregnant. But I recently learned that isn't always true, especially for the Apache. Many of their women were hunters and warriors right along side the men. If that's feminism, it's been around for a while. Whooda thunk the Macho Apache Men would tolerate such things. People say lots of bad things about SG Universe. I don't understand why for the most part. I didn't appreciate the way it had lesbians in it. That crap isn't necessary except to please the gay crowd. But Overall SG Universe was dark and moody and -- riveting. Now,, I just watched a thing called STARGATE ORIGINS: CATHERINE It was 1 hour and 44 minutes long... I assume this is those Stargate Origins bits and pieces all together in a full length film. I must say, I really enjoyed it. I didn't have a problem with it. I didn't see any SJW or Feminism stuff. The people went through the gate to a Matriarchal Society, which in truth was similiar to ancient Egyptians. I've always wondered what happened on the other side of a StarGate when it opened, now I know, this film showed that. None of the other SG's ever showed that. it also shows the Origin of Naquadah and gave a better idea of what it is...SG ORIGINS didn't look Low Budget anymore than SG-1 sometime looked low Budget. Catherine was a bit strong willed, but still she was a female who got laid, by a male and not another female Thank God !!! I didn't like seeing the actor who played "Michael the Wraith" from SG Atlantis portraying the Professor, I wish they would have cast someone else for that role. And I really hated the bit of Fag exchange between the two guys -- Disgusting.So not necessary...But overall, I really liked it. In some ways more than the first Stargate movie with Kurt Russell. I don't understand why so many say bad things about it. DEAN DEVLIN is the producer of all the SG Franchises. He also produced The Librarians, Leverage and Angel. All of which I really enjoy and am pleased with.
